Chapter 1118 Moving with Emotion
That night, Daryl had just stepped into the villa.
Sitting on the couch waiting for Daryl, Azalea smiled and said, "Daryl, you're back?"
"Mom, it's so late, why haven't you rested yet?" Seeing Azalea sitting on the couch, clearly waiting for him, Daryl walked over.
Azalea smiled and asked, "Did you have fun with Skylar tonight?"
Daryl replied, "Tonight was a charity gala. I was just representing Fields Corporation, just going through the motions."
Hearing this, Azalea looked at the seemingly unhappy Daryl and said worriedly, "Daryl, your father's sudden illness has left him in a wheelchair. His health is not what it used to be, and he will need a long time to recuperate at home. Your brother is focused on photography and is quite playful, so the business of Fields Corporation can only rely on you!"
Seeing Azalea's worried expression, Daryl quickly took her hand and assured her, "Mom, don't worry. I will definitely do my best to manage the company well."
"I know you are a responsible and excellent kid. You've always been outstanding and serious about your work. But no matter how excellent a person is, they need help. This time, Fields Corporation's crisis was only overcome with the help of Skylar's father. Skylar is deeply in love with you. Today, when Skylar's mother and I were having tea, she brought up the topic of your engagement. What do you think..." At this point, Daryl impatiently interrupted Azalea.
"Mom, you know how I feel about Skylar. I only see her as a sister, not someone I love. Besides, I want to focus on handling the company's affairs right now and don't want to think about marriage so soon," Daryl said with a frown.
Hearing this, Azalea hesitated for a moment, then earnestly said, "Daryl, I know you don't want to marry Skylar, but in families like ours, marriages serve the family. Your father and I were like that, and so were Skylar's parents. Otherwise, how do you think we managed to grow the business so much with just one family's efforts? Moreover, Skylar is indeed a good girl and very obedient to you. This time, they helped us a lot, and Skylar's mother personally brought up the engagement. The Tate Family now holds a significant amount of our Fields Corporation's shares. I had no choice but to agree to Skylar's mother."
Hearing this, Daryl was shocked. "You agreed?"
"I have no choice. They helped us because they believed you would become their son-in-law. Today, Skylar's mother conveyed Skylar's father's message, subtly threatening that if we don't agree to the engagement, they might sell off their shares in Fields Corporation. Your father's condition has just stabilized; he can't take any more stress," Azalea said with a frown.
Hearing this, Daryl's face darkened, but he couldn't refute Azalea's words.
Seeing Daryl remain silent, Azalea tearfully said, "I know you've always been sentimental and want to find a woman you love. But Daryl, you have to think about the Fields Family. For the sake of the Fields Family, please make this sacrifice. I promise you, once you marry Skylar, if you meet someone you love later, you can keep her be your mistress, and I won't interfere. I believe as long as you appease Skylar, she will accept it. After all, many men in Maple Valley's high society do this, including Skylar's father."
Feeling a bit impatient, Daryl stood up and said, "Mom, I'm going to check on Dad."
With that, Daryl turned and walked into Isaac's bedroom.
At this time, Isaac was already asleep in bed, with a dozen or so medicine bottles on the bedside table and a wheelchair next to the bed.
Seeing the wheelchair, the medicine bottles, and Isaac's aged and weak face, Daryl felt extremely sad.
He knew Azalea was right; Isaac really couldn't take any more stress. As the eldest son of the Fields Family, he should bear the responsibility for the family.
After looking at the resting Isaac for a few more moments, Daryl left the bedroom with a heavy heart.
Returning to the living room, Azalea saw Daryl's unhappy face and considerately said, "Daryl, it's very late. Go get some rest. You've been very tired and under a lot of pressure these days. You must take care of yourself. If something happens to you, I really don't know what to do."
Saying this, Azalea couldn't help but shed tears.
Seeing Azalea cry, Daryl quickly held her shoulders and comforted her, "Mom, I'm young and strong. What could happen to me?"
"Your dad's health has always been good too, but now it's turning out like this. I'm just scared," Azalea said, wiping her tears with a handkerchief.
Looking at Azalea's tear-streaked face, Daryl frowned slightly, then resolutely asked, "Mom, when is the engagement planned?"
"What?" Azalea didn't react for a moment, her eyes fixed on Daryl.
"I asked if you and Skylar's mother have set a date for the engagement," Daryl repeated.
Hearing this, Azalea's face immediately lit up with joy. "Of course, the sooner the better. Skylar's mother suggested next week. Since it's just an engagement, everything can be prepared in time."
"Then let's do it," Daryl said, his eyes darkening, and then he turned and went upstairs.
Watching Daryl's back as he went upstairs, Azalea said happily, "It's too late today. I'll call Skylar's mother first thing in the morning to tell her the good news!"
That night, Daryl still couldn't sleep. The ashtray by his bedside was filled with cigarette butts.
Cecilia had been living in this small apartment for a whole week, and Daryl hadn't come by.
Cecilia thought Daryl had forgotten about her here, but then she remembered that the Fields Family had just gone through a major crisis, and Daryl had just taken over the company's affairs. Plus, his father was still ill, so he might really be too busy.
Cecilia wandered around the apartment every day, feeling extremely lonely and bored. Fortunately, she had the baby in her belly to keep her company, but the pregnancy symptoms were quite severe. She vomited every day and couldn't eat anything, realizing being pregnant was truly the most painful thing in the world.
Cecilia carefully looked around the small apartment and found traces of Daryl everywhere.
His clothes were in the wardrobe, his scent lingered on the bedding, his toiletries were in the bathroom, and even his annotated copy of "One Hundred Years of Solitude" was on the bedside table. Cecilia also noticed that the annotations had continued for dozens of pages, indicating that he had been studying the book during his recent visits.
