Chapter 871 Sincere

The next morning, Susan and Hugo hopped on their horses and took off from the estate.

Susan had gotten pretty good at riding, enough to keep up with Hugo. Sometimes they rode in a line, other times side by side, their laughter floating on the breeze as they soaked in the joy of the ride.

They charged up a hill and then raced down, galloping freely under the blue sky and fluffy clouds.

As Susan rode past a bunch of deep red tulips, her horse stepped on a rock, slipped, and toppled over.

The sudden fall freaked Susan out, and she lost her grip on the reins, tumbling off the horse.

"Susan!" Hugo shouted, seeing her fall into the tulip patch. He didn't think twice about his own safety and jumped off his horse.

He stumbled when he hit the ground but quickly got his balance and rushed to Susan.

Hugo lifted her shoulders and asked urgently, "Are you okay?"

"My ankle hurts," Susan said, wincing from the pain.

Hearing this, Hugo frowned and scooped her up, carrying her back to the estate.

Hugo moved quickly and steadily. Susan, focused on her throbbing ankle, didn't notice the worry in Hugo's blue eyes.

Back at the castle, Hugo called for a country doctor and was ready to head to the city if needed. The servants were all bustling around.

Susan lay on the bed while the doctor checked her ankle. He said it was just a sprain with some soft tissue damage, prescribed some meds, and recommended hot compresses and other care.

After the doctor left, Hugo told the servants to heat water, move Susan's stuff to the first floor, and prepare foods that would help her heal.

Seeing Hugo so busy, Susan said, "Hugo, I'm sorry for causing you so much trouble."

Hugo waved the servants away.

Then he sat by her bed and said, "You're hurt and still apologizing? It's my fault for not taking better care of you. I'm so sorry!"

Seeing his worried face, Susan smiled gently. "I fell off the horse myself. It's not your fault."

"I'm your coach. If you fall, it's because I didn't teach you well. My job now is to help you get better, so you have to listen to me. I don't want you ending up with a limp!" Hugo joked.

The mood lightened up.

Susan laughed and said, "So if I end up with a limp, I'll have to rely on you forever?"

She was joking, but Hugo replied seriously, "Then I'll take care of you for the rest of your life!"

Hearing him speak so earnestly and seeing the seriousness in his blue eyes, Susan felt the atmosphere shift.

His gaze was intense, making Susan quickly look away, feeling uneasy.

"You're really good at joking. Life is long. Besides, you'll have your own wife and kids in the future. You'll have many people to take care of," Susan said awkwardly.

Just then, she felt a squeeze on her hand.

Looking down, she saw Hugo's large hand holding hers, and she frowned.

But Hugo declared, "Susan, as long as you're willing, I'll take care of you for the rest of your life."

His blue eyes were serious, and his expression was solemn, not at all like he was joking.

Susan was stunned.

Panicking, she quickly pulled her hand away and said awkwardly, "Hugo, stop joking. You're Seb's friend."

But her reminder didn't faze him. Hugo said, "But you're no longer Seb's wife. You two have broken up. It's perfectly reasonable and legal for me to pursue you."

Susan was completely dumbfounded!

She had noticed Hugo treating her differently lately, especially the way his blue eyes seemed to hold some emotion when looking at her. But she hadn't thought much of it. Hugo was a noble and charming man. She thought he just admired her. He had once said he liked Luminara women, so Susan only planned to leave quickly, thinking he would forget her after a while.

But she didn't expect Hugo to confess to her. It was really awkward because she had no intention of starting a new relationship, at least not now.

"I'm sorry, Hugo. I still prefer to be just friends with you." Susan clearly rejected Hugo.

Hearing her rejection, Hugo's expression was deeply hurt, his blue eyes showing a trace of pain as he asked, "Susan, don't you have any feelings for me at all?"

The pain in his eyes made Susan feel very guilty. Though Susan did indeed admire the elegant and charming Hugo, she knew it wasn't love. Her heart was already filled with Seb, leaving no room for anyone else.

"Hugo, I..." Susan hadn't finished speaking.

Hugo immediately made a pause gesture. "Don't say it. If you say you have no feelings for me at all, I won't be able to bear it."

"Hugo, I'm sorry," Susan said apologetically, looking at him.

"I should be the one apologizing. I shouldn't have suddenly confessed to you. But please believe me, my feelings for you are genuine and sincere," Hugo declared earnestly.

Susan lowered her gaze, not knowing how to respond, nor how to face his blue eyes filled with love.

At that moment, she could only choose silence.

Fortunately, Hugo didn't make things difficult for her. After applying the ointment to Susan's ankle, he left the room.
