Chapter 127 Exposure
That afternoon, Isabella rushed over with some fruit to visit Susan.
Seeing no one around, Susan quickly pulled Isabella aside and whispered, "I can hear again."
Isabella was thrilled but noticed Susan's hesitation. "Why not tell anyone?" she asked.
"I've been pretending for so long, I don't know how to break it," Susan replied, looking troubled.
Isabella thought for a moment. "If you're pretending, keep it up a bit longer. Let attacker sweat it out. If you were really deaf, she could go to jail."
"They're willing to offer financial compensation if I recover," Susan said.
"That's great! You're probably losing your job over this. You need that compensation. Good jobs are hard to find these days. Don't be too proud to take the money," Isabella advised.
"I'm not that dumb. Being deaf for a while really messed with me," Susan said, recalling the despair.
"Oh, I got you a glass. It'll be easier to drink water here," Isabella said, handing her a pretty glass cup.
"Thanks," Susan said, holding the cup fondly.
After Isabella left, Susan took a nap. As the sky turned orange with sunset, Seb showed up in the ward.
Susan pretended not to hear his footsteps until he was right by her bed. Then she looked up.
Seb placed a small cake on the bedside table. "I remember Henry Thompson knows you like these, right?"
Susan's brow furrowed. 'Seb, do you think you can mess with me just because I can't hear?' she thought.
She had planned to tell Seb her hearing was back and let him handle the situation with Vivian. She trusted him, even if she didn't want to get too close emotionally.
But now, Seb was using her supposed deafness to make snide comments. What was his deal?
So, Susan decided to keep pretending and see what else he'd say.
Seb picked up a pen and wrote: [You love small cakes. Eat up.]
Susan frowned at the note.
[Thanks.] she wrote back angrily.
Then she started eating the cake out of spite.
Today's cake tasted awful; she was already fuming!
Susan sat on the bed eating while Seb watched from a chair.
"Vivian was wrong to hit you, but did you do something to provoke her or cause a misunderstanding?" Seb said calmly.
Susan's hand froze mid-bite!
What was Seb implying? Why was he saying such infuriating things? Was he venting because he thought she couldn't hear?
Seb wasn't usually like this!
Did Seb have another motive? What could it be?
As Susan pondered, she heard the sound of glass shattering on the floor!
She looked up and saw the cup Isabella had given her, broken on the floor.
"My cup!" Susan exclaimed.
"I broke it on purpose," Seb said.
Susan glared at him. "Why did you break my cup? It's just a cup. What did it do to you? I..."
Seb stared at her, disappointed.
Susan suddenly stopped, realizing she had been caught.
Her face flushed with shame, feeling like a child caught in a lie.
"You could hear this morning, couldn't you?" Seb's voice was icy.
Susan looked up and saw his sharp eyes.
She realized Seb had broken the cup to test her.
No matter how careful she was, she couldn't always be on guard. She had wanted to tell Seb earlier, but now it seemed too late.
"You were testing me, weren't you?" Susan said, feeling both angry and embarrassed.
"You were deceiving me," Seb's eyes were cold.
Susan was at a loss for words. No matter how she explained it now, it would seem like a lie.
Seb stood up and walked towards her, his shoes crunching on the broken glass.
"Do you know how worried I was when I heard you were hurt and hospitalized? I ran several red lights and almost crashed into cars!" Seb's voice was loud.
Susan looked at him, confused. He had never told her any of this.
"Do you know how sad I was when I found out you were deaf? I wished it was me who had lost my hearing!" Seb continued to shout.
Susan was moved. Seb wasn't one to express his feelings easily, and she knew this well.
She asked herself, 'what did I mean to Seb?'
"I was afraid you'd be scared, so I left a lot behind to stay with you. Do you know how big a contract I had to sign yesterday? Because I didn't attend, the other party thought I wasn't sincere and canceled it. Do you know how much this cost Prosperity Group?" Seb said, stepping back.
Susan looked at him in shock. She had no idea.
"And you? You were deceiving me. Do you think I'm an idiot?" Seb shouted, then knocked over the chair and stormed out.
Susan collapsed on the bed. She hadn't known any of what Seb had just said.
She believed him because he had never lied to her.
At this moment, Susan felt full of guilt. She hadn't expected her moment of impulsiveness would cause such a significant loss to Prosperity Group.
