Chapter 516 Inner Voice
The next morning, Seb and Susan took Todd to the top rehab spot in Maple Valley, and Leon even tracked down the old caregiver who used to look after Todd.
Lying in the hospital bed, Todd grinned at Seb and Susan. "It's your first day of marriage, and you're already dealing with my mess. Sorry for the hassle."
Susan smiled back. "Dad, we're your kids; it's what we do."
Todd nodded. "You two are heading off on your honeymoon tomorrow. Don't hang around here; go get ready."
Seb turned to Susan. "I gotta hit the office to sign some papers. You stay and chat with Dad for a bit."
"Sure thing." Seb and Leon left the room.
Susan grabbed an apple and sat by the bed. "Dad, let me peel this for you."
"Alright." Todd nodded, still smiling.
Just as Susan finished peeling the apple, there was a knock on the door.
The caregiver quickly went to open it.
A familiar female voice chimed in. "Todd, you're here."
Susan looked up and saw Catherine walk in.
"Catherine, what are you doing here?" Todd's face was a mix of surprise and happiness.
Catherine had changed her clothes today. As usual, she was dressed simply but still looked clean and fresh, making people feel comfortable.
Catherine glanced around the room and, seeing Susan, toned down her excitement a bit and smiled. "I heard you were moving into the rehab center today, and I was worried, so I came to check on you."
Todd glanced at Susan, his face calming down. "Catherine, thanks a lot."
"We're all family; no need to be so formal. I was just worried you might not find a good caregiver in time, so I thought I'd come and help out for a few days." Catherine was carrying a travel bag, clearly packed with her stuff.
Susan was not happy about this.
Then she said, "Mom, Seb already found a caregiver for Dad. You don't need to worry; we've got it covered."
Catherine glanced at the young caregiver standing nearby and insisted, "She's young and doesn't know how to take care of Todd. I'd better stay and teach her."
"Mom." Susan wanted to say more but held back.
Todd looked deeply at Catherine and, after a while, said, "Catherine, having a caregiver here is enough. You should go back."
Catherine looked up at him, wanting to say something but hesitating, her eyes filled with reluctance.
Seeing her expression, Todd was also quite helpless, his brows furrowing together.
Seeing this, Susan had no choice but to say to Todd, "Dad, I'll walk Mom out."
After saying this, Susan pulled Catherine out of the room.
Once they were out of the building and in a secluded spot, Susan let go of Catherine's hand.
"Why did you drag me here?" Catherine said, shaking off Susan's hand in annoyance.
Susan couldn't hold it in any longer and blurted out, "Mom, what are you doing here today?"
"I'm here to take care of Todd. Isn't this what Carol arranged for me?" Catherine said confidently, but her eyes darted away from Susan's.
Susan was so mad she spun around in frustration. "Mom, don't think I'm blind. Are you having an affair with Todd?"
Even though Susan hated to ask, she knew she had to get it out in the open before it was too late.
"What nonsense are you talking about? Todd and I are innocent." Catherine denied it, but there was a hint of guilt in her voice.
"The way Todd looks at you is weird, and the way you look at him is even weirder. Mom, don't be stupid, okay? Todd has a family, and Carol is a tough cookie. If she finds out, you'll be in deep trouble, and people will call you a homewrecker. And what about Seb? How will he feel? I'll be humiliated in the Anderson family." Susan was desperate to make her point clear.
"I know all this. But I haven't done anything with Todd. I just feel sorry for him and can't help but want to care for him. Todd's leg injury is so bad, and Carol just left without a word, not even a call for days. It's heartbreaking." Catherine's eyes welled up with tears.
Susan felt bad for Todd too, but she knew she couldn't change anything.
"Mom, no matter how bad Carol is, she and Todd are still married. You can't see Todd again, and you can't come here to visit him. Do you understand?" Susan grabbed Catherine's arm, her voice urgent.
Catherine couldn't hold back her tears anymore.
Seeing her mom cry, Susan felt a pang of discomfort and turned her face away.
With a sob, Catherine said, "I've spent most of my life raising you and Dorothy, thinking I'd be alone forever. I never expected to meet Todd. But we met at the wrong time. I hate mistresses the most and would never stoop to being one. Don't worry; I won't see him again."
Catherine wiped her tears with the back of her hand and turned to leave.
Watching her mom's lonely figure walk away, Susan felt a deep sadness.
She really hoped Catherine could find her own happiness, especially since she was only in her fifties. But that person couldn't be Todd. Susan felt torn and distressed.
On the way home, Susan's phone rang. It was Isabella.
After taking a moment to compose herself, Susan answered. "What's so important that you had to call now? Don't you know I just got married?"
Isabella's voice was excited. "I have good news for you!"
"What good news?" Susan asked, her mind still on her mom.
Isabella's tone turned playful. "Am I interrupting you? Are you and he still in bed at this hour?"
Hearing the teasing laughter, Susan couldn't help but smile. "We've been up for a while, okay? I just got back from taking Todd to the rehab center."
