Chapter 455 The Wicked Mother-in-Law

One afternoon during lunch break, Maria and the receptionist had bounced out, leaving Susan chilling in the break room, looking all worried while sipping on her coffee.

Isabella strolled in, caught sight of Susan's face, and was like, "Still stressing about your evil mother-in-law rolling into Maple Valley? Usually, you're a badass, so why are you scaring of Carol this time?"

Susan let out a bitter smile and said, "I'm not scared of her. Worst case, I'll just avoid her. But I'm worried it'll mess things up for Seb."

Isabella sighed, "Yeah, I get it. But your in-laws aren't crashing here forever, right? Just hang in there for a bit. Maybe after you tie the knot, they'll head back to the central district. No need to start drama with her in such a short time. Best if you two can just play nice and be civil when you bump into each other a few times a year."

"That's what I'm thinking too," Susan said, cracking a smile.

After that, Susan and Isabella left the break room, Susan still clutching her coffee.

Susan glanced at Isabella's open cabinet and noticed the bag with the pants was still there. She couldn't help but ask, "You still haven't given those pants away?"

It had been a few days, and Susan figured Isabella would've found a chance to hand the pants to Leon by now.

Isabella frowned and said, "I feel like giving a man a pair of pants as a girl might make him read too much into it, so I decided not to."

Hearing this, Susan thought Isabella had a point. She knew Isabella had a thing for Leon, but if she gave the pants and Leon didn't take them, Isabella would be super embarrassed.

So, Susan smiled and said, "If you're not giving them, why don't you just return the pants?"

"I think the pants look really nice. I don't wanna return them; I'll just keep them," Isabella stammered.

Susan wanted to say more, but Isabella made an excuse to bounce, clearly not wanting to keep talking about it. Susan, being considerate, didn't push further, especially since she was feeling down herself, and went back to her office.

On Saturday, Todd and Carol rolled into Maple Valley.

Seb went to the train station to pick them up, while Susan stayed home to whip up a meal.

For some reason, Spring was super fussy today, and Mary was busy taking care of her, so only Kathy was helping Susan.

By noon, with Kathy's help, Susan finally managed to set up a table full of tasty dishes.

Just as they were setting the table, they heard a noise in the foyer.

"Mr. Todd Anderson and Mrs. Carol Anderson are here!" Kathy said excitedly.

Hearing this, Susan felt a bit nervous. She quickly tidied her hair and went to the foyer with Kathy to greet them.

"Hello, Mr. Todd Anderson and Mrs. Carol Anderson!" Kathy greeted Todd and Carol and then took the luggage from Seb and Leon to put away.

Susan saw Todd in a suit, looking simple and steady, while Carol was still dressed to the nines, dripping in jewelry. Though she had aged a bit over the years, she was still well-maintained, with the same shrewd look in her eyes as before.

"Dad, Mom, you must be wiped from the trip!" Susan said with a gentle smile to Todd and Carol.

"Nah, nah," Todd replied with a kind smile.

Carol didn't say a word, just gave Susan a once-over that made her feel all kinds of uncomfortable, but she had to suck it up.

Susan thought, 'Looks like she's still not happy with me; otherwise, she wouldn't be so frosty.'

Seb quickly tried to smooth things over. "Is the food ready? Mom and Dad are starving."

"It's already on the table," Susan quickly replied.

Entering the living room, Todd headed to the restroom, while Carol looked around and said critically, "Even with two kids, you shouldn't let the house get this messy. It's rude to have children's stuff everywhere when guests come over!"

Although Susan felt wronged, she had to humble herself at this moment and quickly nodded. "Mom, I'll keep that in mind."

"Mom, the food's getting cold. Let's eat," Seb said, exchanging a glance with Susan.

Carol and Todd then took their seats, sitting in the spots where Susan and Seb usually sat, while Susan and Seb took the secondary seats.

"Where's my grandson?" Carol asked before eating.

"Hayden's here!" Kathy brought Hayden over.

"Hayden, say hello to Grandpa and Grandma," Susan said, pulling Hayden over.

Hayden, seeing Todd and Carol, felt a bit shy because Carol's expression was very stern. However, he still politely said, "Hello, Grandpa and Grandma," though not very enthusiastically.

"Good boy," Todd said, smiling and nodding.

Carol merely curled her lips, if that could be called a smile.

Then, Carol took out a large envelope from her bag and handed it to Hayden. "Hayden, this is a gift from me. Keep it well!"

"Thank you, Grandma," Hayden said, handing the envelope to Susan.

At this moment, Seb quickly said, "Mary, bring Spring over to let my mom see her."

Mary had just responded when Carol said sarcastically, "What's so special about a girl?"

Hearing this, Susan frowned, and Seb felt a bit awkward.

Todd quickly tried to smooth things over. "Girls are sweet and obedient, just as good!"

"I didn't prepare any pocket money for her," Carol said, frowning.

"I did," Todd said, clearly unhappy.

At this moment, Susan was really angry. She could tolerate being treated harshly, but not Spring. In today's society, how could Carol still favor boys over girls?

Susan looked up and saw Seb's eyes comforting her. She knew she couldn't lose her temper now. Besides, Todd was a good person, and having a conflict right after they arrived would ruin the atmosphere, so she had to hold back.

After a while, Mary brought Spring over. As expected, Carol didn't even lift her head. However, Todd stood up, held Spring, and took an envelope out of his pocket, placing it in Spring's hand, showing how much he valued his granddaughter.

After Todd put Spring down, Susan had Mary take Spring away. Since Carol didn't like her granddaughter, there was no need for Spring to stay and be neglected.

Then, Seb smiled and said, "Dad, Mom, Susan cooked these dishes herself for you. Please try them!"

"Great, they look delicious," Todd said with a smile.
