Chapter 916 Public Outrage
Leon hopped into the car and chucked the envelope onto the passenger seat with a bit of force.
He fired up the engine, floored the gas pedal, and the car zoomed off.
In the darkness, Isabella stood by the window, feeling a pang of loss as she watched the car disappear into the night.
Time flew by, and before she knew it, two months had passed.
During her lunch break, the beauty salon owner from next door popped in again, eager to play matchmaker for Isabella.
"Ms. Brown, what do you think about my cousin I mentioned last time?" The salon owner asked, pulling Isabella aside with a big grin.
This lady was super enthusiastic. Last time, she had roped Isabella into two beauty treatments and a long chat. Knowing Isabella was thirty and still single, she was determined to set her up with her cousin.
"I've been swamped with work lately, and I just don't have time for personal stuff," Isabella said, looking a bit troubled.
The salon owner had tried multiple times to introduce her cousin to Isabella, and each time, Isabella had politely declined. But the woman just wouldn't give up.
The salon owner didn't buy it, and she pulled Isabella aside and said, "Ms. Brown, you're not getting any younger. If you don't hurry, you'll really become an old maid in a couple of years. Look at you, you're pretty, you have a decent job, and no family burdens now. My cousin is quite a catch. He's been busy with his career, so he hasn't had time for personal matters."
The salon owner kept rambling on, but Isabella had lost her patience.
She didn't want to go on a blind date.
Finally, Isabella couldn't take it anymore and interrupted, "I have an appointment with a client soon. I need to prepare some documents. Can we talk about this next time?"
"Alright, I'll come back next time," the salon owner said with a smile as she left.
After she was gone, Isabella felt really irritated.
Being a thirty-year-old woman without a partner seemed to provoke public outrage, like everyone around her was fixated on it.
But she really had no desire to find a partner right now.
'Damn it, why is Leon's face always in my mind?' she cursed in her head.
It had been two months, and Isabella didn't know why, but every night she would unconsciously glance out the kitchen window.
However, Leon, who used to frequently appear downstairs, hadn't shown up again. Isabella felt an emptiness inside, and she couldn't muster any enthusiasm for anything in the past two months.
'Could it be that I still can't forget him?' In the quiet of the night, Isabella asked herself.
One afternoon, Susan walked in carrying a box.
"Isabella, come in and help me check out this evening gown," Susan said as she walked into the office with the box.
Isabella quickly got up and followed her in, closing the office door behind her. She smiled and said, "What? Is Seb taking you to another important event?"
"Tonight is the Prosperity Group's annual gala. Seb asked me to accompany him. I didn't want to go, but he insisted, and I couldn't refuse. You know our relationship has been strained lately," Susan said, furrowing her brows.
"You two still haven't patched things up?" Isabella asked, her brows knitting together.
"We have, but with his mom around, it's been tough," Susan replied, looking troubled.
Isabella tried to console her, "Don't worry. Maybe with time, you guys will find a way to balance things out. After all, you two love each other very much."
"He sent me an evening gown. Take a look and tell me if it's nice," Susan said, opening the box to reveal a silver-red dress.
"It's gorgeous. You'll look amazing in it," Isabella said with a smile.
"I also have an extra invitation. Why don't you come along and join the fun?" Susan handed Isabella a beautifully crafted red and gold invitation.
Isabella didn't take the invitation and said self-deprecatingly, "I don't think I need to go to this gala."
"Hey, you used to work for Prosperity Group. Plus, you're still my best friend, which makes you a VIP," Susan said with a smile.
"I'd rather not go," Isabella said, turning to sit in her chair, thinking to herself, 'Leon will definitely be there, and it would be awkward to run into him.'
In the past two months, Isabella hadn't seen Leon at all. Previously, because of Susan, Isabella would see him once or twice a month, but now, two months had passed without a single encounter. This indicated that he was deliberately avoiding her.
Since that was the case, she shouldn't show up in front of Leon. Leon clearly didn't want to see her.
Sensing Isabella's lack of enthusiasm, Susan smiled and said, "The food and drinks at tonight's gala are top-notch, and every guest will receive a beautiful gift. I heard it's a set of exquisite porcelain. Don't you want it?"
Hearing this, Isabella's eyes lit up, but she still couldn't muster any enthusiasm. "I can't go dressed like this. By the time I go home and change, the party will be over."
Susan smiled, turned, and took out a beautifully wrapped box from the cabinet, then opened it in front of Isabella.
Isabella looked down and saw a black dress.
"This is something I bought last time but haven't worn yet," Susan said, handing the box to Isabella.
"Really? So generous!" Isabella said, picking up the dress and seeing it was a designer brand.
"I just want you to come with me," Susan said warmly.
Isabella still didn't want to go and tried to excuse herself, "Everyone else will have a date. It wouldn't be appropriate for me to go alone."
Isabella was just making an excuse, but Susan quickly said, "Why not ask Leon to be your date?"
Hearing this, Isabella immediately said, "Why bring him up?"
Seeing Isabella's reaction, Susan stepped forward and smiled. "Hey, what's going on between you and Leon? Spill the beans!"
At this point, Isabella nervously said, "Nothing! Really!"
"I don't think so. There must be something going on between you two." Susan said.
"Don't talk nonsense!" Isabella's face turned red, and she quickly got up, folded the dress, and put it back in the box, knowing she was trying to hide her emotions.
Susan walked behind Isabella, glanced at her uneasy expression, and said, "If there's nothing between you and Leon, then why are you afraid to go to the Prosperity Group's annual gala? Are you scared of seeing him?"
