Chapter 174 This Is Unfair to Me

"Why? Just 'cause I'm Seb's brother? That's unfair," George said, frowning.

Susan felt a headache coming on.

"Why don't you get it? I don't want to talk about feelings, and I don't have any for you. Mr. Anderson, if you have nothing else to say, I'm tired and need to rest. Please leave," Susan said, regretting letting George come up. But it was for the best; she could clear things up once and for all.

Hearing Susan ask him to leave, George felt like his legs were made of lead. But being polite, he started walking to the door.

Susan crossed her arms, not looking at him. She just wanted him gone; she didn't want to get tangled up with any man again.

When George reached the door, he turned and looked at Susan's back. "Can we just be friends?" he asked.

Susan looked up at the ceiling.

She knew this was just a trick. If they became friends, George would have a chance to get close to her. She wasn't an eighteen-year-old girl anymore. After two failed relationships, she had learned a lot and been deeply hurt.

Facing away from him, Susan asked, "Did you break up with Vivian because of me?"

George was momentarily speechless, not expecting the question.

After hesitating, George replied, "Vivian and I had many issues. Our relationship has been on and off for years. Honestly, I'm really tired. I've been struggling but never willing to let go. Of course, if it weren't for you, I wouldn't have made the decision to leave Vivian and end things completely."

Hearing this, Susan frowned.

So Vivian was right. Although Susan had no intention and no ambiguous relationship with George, their breakup was partly because of her.

Susan despised being the third party because both Catherine's marriage and her own first love had fallen apart due to such interference. Therefore, Susan had nothing but contempt for mistresses, let alone playing the role of one herself.

So, the next moment, Susan turned to George and said very seriously, "I'm sorry, but we can't be friends, not even just ordinary friends."

Hearing this, George was a bit stunned. He took two steps forward.

Susan immediately stopped him. "Don't come any closer!"

George stopped and nodded. "Okay, I won't come closer. But please don't blame yourself for my breakup with Vivian, okay? It really has nothing to do with you!"

Seeing George explaining from a distance, unable to take a step closer, Susan knew George at least respected her. She didn't want to hurt George, especially since he had saved her life.

So, Susan said, "I didn't do anything wrong, so I don't need to take responsibility for your breakup with Vivian. I just don't want to be friends with you because I don't want to be misunderstood by Vivian again, even though I don't have any good feelings towards her."

"I've already broken up with Vivian," George said, spreading his hands, trying to persuade Susan.

But Susan didn't want to get entangled with him. She turned away and said, "I'm sorry, I don't want to discuss this anymore. I've made my decision."

George felt disappointed but kept his cool. He gave Susan a deep look and said, "I should be the one apologizing for disturbing you. I'm leaving now."

With that, George turned, opened the door, and walked out.

Hearing the door close, Susan turned her head and saw it was shut.

Feeling exhausted, Susan leaned back on the sofa.

George was a good guy—just, kind, and determined. But they weren't right for each other.

A week later, Susan went back to work at the travel agency.

As soon as Adrian saw her, he beamed and pulled her into his office.

"Susan, have a seat," Adrian said, gesturing for her to sit down.

Surprised by Adrian's enthusiastic smile, Susan sat down.

Adrian had always been nice, but never this flattering, which made Susan uneasy.

Adrian smiled and said, "Susan, we really owe you for finding a friend to help our agency. We might have had to shut down otherwise, which would have been a huge loss!"

Susan replied, "This whole thing started because of me. I caused trouble for the agency, so it's only right I make up for it."

Adrian nodded. "Susan, that's what I like about you. You're humble and never pretentious. By the way, can you tell me which influential friend helped us out this time?"

Susan finally understood. Adrian wanted to know if she had connections in the tourism bureau.

"Just a not-so-close friend. I happened to run into him that day, so I asked for his help," Susan said lightly, not wanting to cause trouble for George.

But Adrian didn't believe her. "Susan, we're all part of the same agency. No need to be so secretive. I heard your friend is a big shot in Maple Valley. You city folks have great connections. Our agency will need your help in the future. How about this: starting next month—no, starting this month, your salary will be increased by twenty percent!"

"Boss, I..." Susan was stunned, knowing Adrian's money wasn't easy to take. Businessmen always have their own plans.

"Alright, no need to say more. It's settled. You can go back to work now," Adrian said, waving his hand to stop Susan from speaking.

"Then I'll go back now," Susan said, slowly getting up and leaving Adrian's office.

Back in the finance office, Susan felt her days at the travel agency had completely changed.

Adrian would invite her to meals at intervals, and she couldn't refuse. He frequently sent her fruits, specialties, and various gifts, which she couldn't decline.

Moreover, Susan no longer had to do any tiring work. Every day, she just needed to keep the accounts in order, a big change from before when she helped with everything.

Adrian smiled at her every day, never showing a cold face. The more Susan worked there, the more depressed she felt, losing the comfort she once had.
