Chapter 385 The Truth
That afternoon, Susan bailed on work early to drop off some docs to a client on her way home.
The living room was dead quiet. Susan strolled to the bedroom and saw Spring still snoozing in the crib, and Hayden hadn't rolled in from school yet.
After peeking at the cute little Spring, Susan gently shut the door.
Right then, she caught some low-key chatter coming from the kitchen.
Susan's nose picked up the smell of some bomb soup, and she knew Kathy was whipping it up, with Mary probably giving her a hand.
They were deep in their convo and hadn't clocked her return.
Susan was about to head upstairs when their convo made her freeze.
"It's a bummer Cynthia kicked the bucket so young. I heard she had no fam or friends around, and Mr. Anderson had to handle all the funeral stuff," Mary said.
"Yeah, it's sad, but she wasn't exactly a saint. Karma's a thing!" Kathy whispered.
"She just wanted to get Ms. Wilson out of Mr. Anderson's life. Dying over that seems kinda extreme, right?" Mary said, confused.
"No, you're wrong. Listen, I'm only spilling this to you, so zip it!" Kathy warned.
"Spill it, I swear I won't blab," Mary promised over and over.
Then Kathy started, "Back when Ms. Wilson was preggo with Hayden, I was the one looking after her. One day, Mrs. Anderson, Mr. Anderson's mom, came to me and asked me to keep tabs on Ms. Wilson. I didn't think much of it. I knew she never liked Ms. Wilson as her daughter-in-law and probably wanted some dirt on her. I used to work for Mrs. Anderson, so I had to do what she said. Little did I know, she was feeding info to Cynthia. One time, Cynthia stormed into Ms. Wilson's place, humiliated her, and claimed Mr. Anderson loved her, which made Ms. Wilson go into early labor!"
"That's messed up. From what I know, Mr. Anderson isn't the cheating type. She must've been lying," Mary said.
"She was lying. I think Mrs. Anderson liked Cynthia and teamed up with her to mess with Ms. Wilson. It gets worse. When Ms. Wilson went into early labor and was rushed to the hospital, Cynthia somehow got the number of a guy friend close to Ms. Wilson and called him over. Just then, Mr. Anderson showed up. That guy had once chased Ms. Wilson, and Mr. Anderson got the wrong idea. They fought in the hospital, and Cynthia, being nasty, and Mrs. Anderson, being dumb, even accused Ms. Wilson of carrying another man's kid. You know how proud and stubborn Mr. Anderson is; he couldn't handle that. Plus, he and Ms. Wilson were already on the rocks, so they ended up splitting," Kathy said.
Hearing this, Susan, standing outside, was floored!
She knew Cynthia had a thing for Seb, but she never thought Cynthia had teamed up with Seb's mom, Carol, to mess with her.
No wonder Seb lied about the baby being dead; he totally misunderstood her back then.
Susan clenched her fists. No wonder Cynthia wanted to apologize face-to-face; she knew exactly how bad she messed up.
Carol's actions were even more unforgivable. Susan was carrying her grandkid, for crying out loud. How could she pull such a stunt? Susan's heart filled with pure resentment towards Carol.
If it weren't for Cynthia and Carol, she and Hayden wouldn't have been torn apart. Maybe Hayden wouldn't have gotten leukemia and wouldn't have gone through all that pain.
"Looks like Cynthia got what was coming to her, but Mrs. Anderson was just plain evil. How could she treat Ms. Wilson like that?" Mary griped.
Kathy sighed. "Mrs. Anderson had her reasons. She looked down on Ms. Wilson's background and wanted a better match for Mr. Anderson, but he wasn't having it."
"Mrs. Anderson should respect her son's choices," Mary said, while picking veggies.
"I feel guilty too. Watching Ms. Wilson suffer all these years, I wanted to spill the beans, but I was scared. Mrs. Anderson threatened me with my son. He had a ton of gambling debts, and Mrs. Anderson bailed him out. I couldn't be ungrateful. I've had sleepless nights for years," Kathy said, full of regret.
"We can't meddle in our employers' drama. You had no choice, so don't beat yourself up," Mary tried to comfort Kathy.
Hearing this, Susan quietly headed upstairs.
Closing the door and leaning against it, Susan's heart was still racing.
Carol was too ruthless. Even if she didn't like her, she didn't need to go that low.
But thinking about it, Carol was Seb's mom. There was no dodging her in the future. The thought made Susan hesitate.
If she remarried Seb, she'd be Carol's daughter-in-law. Even if they didn't live together, they'd still see each other a lot. Just thinking about it gave Susan a headache.
And with Carol's stubborn and competitive nature, she'd definitely keep opposing her. But giving up on Seb? No way. So, would she have to live like this forever?
Or should she confront Carol and become enemies?
Susan immediately nixed that idea. After all, she had no proof, and with Cynthia dead, there was no way to confirm the truth. Without solid evidence, Seb wouldn't believe Carol could do such a thing.
After a lot of thinking, Susan decided she couldn't back down. Giving up on Seb because of Carol was not an option for her or Seb. It would only play into Carol's hands and hurt their kids.
Susan's final decision was that she would never live with Carol. This way, they'd see each other less. If Carol could accept her for the sake of the kids, they could still be a happy family. But if Carol kept scheming, Susan wouldn't hesitate to fight back. She had to protect her marriage and her kids!
