Chapter 1277 You're Too Much
"Mrs. Fields, the fruit's ready," the maid said, noticing Cecilia still standing there, lost in thought.
Cecilia snapped out of it. "Oh, right."
She glanced at the two plates of fruit, neatly cut into small pieces with toothpicks stuck in them. She picked up the plates and carried them out of the kitchen.
"Fruit's ready," Cecilia said with a smile as she placed the plates on the table.
Azalea quickly chimed in, "Skylar, your favorite pears and the durians from Sylvanor. Go ahead, try them."
"Sure," Skylar replied with a smile, taking a piece of durian and then a piece of pear.
"How is it? Does it taste right?" Azalea asked with a grin.
Skylar savored the fruit before saying, "The pear's good, but this durian doesn't seem to be from Sylvanor."
Cecilia frowned slightly at this.
Durians were expensive, and Cecilia rarely ate them, let alone knew the differences between those from various regions.
Azalea turned to Cecilia with a scolding tone, "You can't even buy the right fruit?"
Cecilia lowered her head and mumbled, "But the store owner said it was from Sylvanor."
Skylar chuckled, "Durians from Sylvanor cost twice as much as regular ones. A lot of stores take advantage of buyers who don't know better, selling regular durians as Sylvanor ones to make a huge profit."
Cecilia stared at Skylar in surprise, but she couldn't deny the truth in her words.
Azalea scolded Cecilia again, "These dishonest merchants! You need to be more careful next time. If you can't even buy fruit without getting scammed, what can you do?"
Cecilia lowered her head, feeling useless for being tricked over something as simple as buying fruit.
Skylar smiled and said, "Godmother, Cecilia probably hasn't had Sylvanor durians before, so it's no wonder she got fooled. Don't be too hard on her."
"That's why people need to see the world. Those who haven't are like frogs in a well," Azalea agreed.
Cecilia's face turned red at their remarks.
Why did it feel like Skylar was being unfriendly today? Even though she wasn't saying anything outright mean, her eyes seemed cold and disdainful.
Skylar stood up and said, "Godmother, it's getting late. I'll visit you another day."
Azalea quickly stood up, "Stay for dinner before you go?"
"No need, Godmother. Next time, I'll take you out to eat," Skylar said, glancing at Cecilia.
"Alright, I know you don't feel comfortable eating here," Azalea said, following Skylar's gaze to Cecilia.
Cecilia felt extremely awkward.
Why were they both looking at her? Was Skylar uncomfortable eating at the Fields' because of her?
Cecilia felt a sting in her heart.
She was Daryl's wife, and even if she wasn't the lady of the house yet, she would be in the future. How could a guest make her feel unwelcome in her own home? The more she thought about it, the more upset she became.
Skylar took Azalea's hand and said, "Godmother, you don't need to see me out. I'll go by myself."
"You don't come often. I should at least see you off," Azalea insisted.
Skylar looked at Cecilia and smiled, "Godmother, let Cecilia see me out. You said your leg was hurting earlier, so you shouldn't walk."
Azalea smiled, "You're so considerate. Alright, let her see you out."
Cecilia silently moved towards the door.
Skylar said her goodbyes to Azalea and walked to the door. As she passed Cecilia, she gave her a cold look before stepping outside.
Cecilia felt Skylar's unfriendly gaze but decided to see her out since she was a guest.
Skylar walked along the cobblestone path, surrounded by green lawns, with Cecilia following behind. They didn't speak much, as there wasn't much to say.
When Skylar reached the black wrought-iron gate, she turned around, a smile playing on her lips. "Cecilia, are you feeling proud of yourself now?"
Cecilia frowned. "What do you mean, Skylar?"
"You don't get it? You've got Daryl's love, married into the Fields family, and became the president's wife. You're on top of the world!" Skylar said with a mocking smile.
Cecilia knew Skylar had deep feelings for Daryl. It was natural for her to feel sad and bitter after Daryl married Cecilia, so Cecilia didn't want to argue with her.
"Skylar, I know you must resent me. I'll accept your mockery if it makes you feel better," Cecilia said calmly.
Skylar had expected Cecilia to be flustered, but her composed demeanor only made Skylar angrier.
"Cecilia, who do you think you are? You're just a commoner who got lucky. Even if you've climbed high, the fall will be harder. Do you really think you can hold your ground in the Fields family? Godmother won't accept you, and neither will the rest of the family. Daryl is the only one you've fooled, but he'll regret marrying you. Once you lose your looks, he'll leave you!" Skylar spat out, her words full of venom.
Cecilia knew Skylar resented her, but she hadn't realized the depth of her hatred. Still, she couldn't blame her; after all, she had taken the person Skylar loved most.
Cecilia smiled faintly. "If Daryl only cares about my looks, wouldn't he leave you too if you were the one he married and you grew old?"
Skylar's face twisted in anger, her fists clenched. "Cecilia, you're too much!"
