Chapter 508 Evil Intentions
Seeing the look in Seb's eyes, Susan's heart did a little happy dance. She shot him a smile, letting him know she was cool and could handle it.
Right then, Carol chimed in, "Andrew, I heard from Rylee that your mentor wants you to stay abroad and teach. Is that for real?"
Andrew glanced at Rylee and nodded. "Yeah, Mom. But Rylee can't stand being away from you guys and Seb, so I had to turn it down. My mentor just called me again, asking me to think it over, but I've made up my mind. I'm coming back home."
Rylee beamed, and Carol was grinning like a Cheshire cat. "Good. We were really worried about you two being so far away."
Todd jumped in, all calm and collected, "Andrew, what's the game plan for you and Rylee?"
Andrew didn't miss a beat. "Rylee and I have been hitched for five years, but with all the studying, no kids yet. If we wait any longer, Rylee's gonna be an older mom. So, she wants to start trying for a baby first, then we'll figure out the rest."
"Yeah, having a kid is top priority," Carol nodded eagerly.
Todd nodded too, looking at Andrew. "So, what's the plan?"
Andrew smiled and looked down. "I need to get a job to support Rylee. We've been living off your money all these years, and I feel really bad about it. You trusted me with Rylee, and I promise I'll work hard to give her and our kid a good life."
Todd and Carol nodded, and Rylee looked at Andrew like he hung the moon. She believed every word he said, even if he told her the sky was green.
Susan couldn't help but think back. He was just a broke student back then, saying the same sweet stuff to her. But soon enough, he was all over Rylee.
So, hearing Andrew's words now, a cold smile crept onto her face.
Carol couldn't help but say, "Why look for a job? We have a company; you can just work at Prosperity Group!"
Susan frowned at that.
Todd and Seb stayed quiet.
Andrew, trying to be humble, said, "Mom, even though I have a PhD, I don't have any work experience. I'm not sure I can help Seb at Prosperity Group."
He looked at Seb, waiting for him to say something.
"You're a PhD, and you studied economic management. That'll definitely be useful," Carol said with a smile.
Seb and Todd exchanged a look, and Todd said, "Andrew is family. It's only right for him to help at Prosperity Group, but he should start from the bottom to get a solid foundation."
Andrew smiled slightly but didn't say anything.
Carol wasn't having it. "A PhD from the Averlake starting from the bottom? And Andrew is our son-in-law; how can that be?"
"When Seb graduated, he also started from the bottom for a year before becoming VP, and then another year before taking over as president," Todd shot back.
"Seb's our son and the heir, so of course, he needs to start from the bottom. Andrew's our son-in-law; it's different," Carol insisted.
Todd sighed, "Let's talk about this later."
Rylee pouted, "Dad, what do you mean? Are you not happy we're back? If not, we'll head back to Averlake right now!"
"Rylee, don't be ridiculous!" Todd snapped.
Rylee, still a bit scared of her strict dad, turned to Seb and whined, "Seb, say something!"
Seb, who had been quiet, cleared his throat. "Dad, Mom, Andrew's family and a PhD from the Averlake. Having him at Prosperity Group is better than hiring an outsider. I have a VP spot open; let's give Andrew a shot."
Everyone was stunned!
Rylee was over the moon. She jumped up, hugged Seb, and kissed his cheek. "You're the best brother ever!"
Carol was thrilled too. "With Andrew helping you, I can relax."
But Todd's face was grim, clearly not happy.
Susan frowned slightly.
Honestly, she didn't want Andrew at Prosperity Group, especially not in such a high position. She always felt Andrew had hidden agendas and worried he might harm Seb or scheme against the Anderson family's wealth. After all, his choice of Rylee seemed fishy.
But Susan was just a daughter-in-law in the Anderson family, and to Carol, she was an outsider. It wasn't her place to speak up, so she could only worry about Seb in silence.
Andrew stood up, raised his glass, and toasted Seb. "Seb, I promise I'll work hard and not let you down!"
"Sit down," Seb waved him off and took a sip from his glass.
After that, Andrew was even more enthusiastic in his toasting. The room was filled with toasts.
Susan felt a bit hot and needed some air, so she quietly excused herself to the restroom.
Standing at the sink, Susan washed her hands and took a deep breath.
Today felt surreal; Andrew was actually Seb's brother-in-law. The feeling was too complicated.
Looking at herself in the mirror, Susan remembered Andrew's fake clueless look earlier. She thought about telling Seb about her past with Andrew but decided against it. It wouldn't help anyone, and Andrew probably wouldn't spill, so she chose to keep quiet.
Susan calmed herself down, realizing she had been out for too long, and turned to leave.
Walking down the hallway with her head down, she almost bumped into someone!
Startled, Susan looked up and saw Andrew standing right in front of her.
