Chapter 141 We Will Be Relatives in the Future
"Yeah, it's all in the past. I've always wanted to see you, but..." George started, then hesitated.
Susan noticed his hesitation and wanted to wrap things up quickly.
"I'm fine, no need to worry. I have to go," she said, holding the box and getting ready to leave.
"Goodbye," George replied, watching her walk away.
After a few steps, Susan stopped, thought for a moment, then turned back and called out, "Wait a minute!"
George turned around, seeing Susan standing there with the box.
"What's up?" he asked, noticing her serious look.
"I need to tell you something. I used to work at your firm, and I don't want incompetent employees or good ones being bullied," Susan said, meeting his eyes.
"Who are you talking about?" George frowned.
Susan pulled a small notebook from the box and handed it to him. "This has records of Fiona misusing her authority for false overtime, travel allowances, and meal expenses while I was on the job."
George examined the notebook and smiled. "This is detailed—times, places, people. Why give it to me now? Personal grudge with Fiona?"
"You're half right," Susan replied after a moment.
"What's the other half?" George asked, holding the notebook.
"Fiona saw me as an enemy from day one. When I found out about her false claims, I thought she was just petty because I took her position as financial manager. I didn't want to stir trouble. But now I see she's malicious and bullies the weak. She's disrupted the finance department. Whether for public or private reasons, I had to tell you. I'm not afraid of her retaliation. If you talk to her and she asks who reported her, tell her it was me, Susan!"
George looked away and laughed.
"Why are you laughing?" Susan frowned.
George stopped smiling and said, "You're still the same Susan. That's what I admire about you."
"What do you admire about me?" Susan asked, feeling her future was still uncertain and her career stalled.
"Your straightforwardness. You don't have the pretentiousness of others. Being with you feels natural and comfortable," George said sincerely.
Susan was taken aback, then smiled. "You could just say I lack femininity, no need to flatter me."
Her words made George laugh too.
After laughing, George's expression turned serious again. He looked at Susan and slowly asked, "Susan, can we still be friends?"
Susan saw the warmth in his eyes, making her feel uneasy. He seemed cautious, almost afraid she'd reject him.
From past interactions, Susan sensed George's feelings for her went beyond a boss-employee relationship, which she had always tried to avoid.
She couldn't say they could stay friends. She didn't want to get hurt again or make Seb jealous. None of that would help her.
But George had been good to her, valuing and taking care of her at the firm. Refusing to be friends seemed harsh.
After a moment, Susan smiled brightly. "We'll be relatives soon, isn't that closer than friends?"
"Relatives? You and Seb..." George asked, frowning.
Susan blushed. "We've reconciled."
"Are you getting married?" George asked, looking tense.
"Remarrying, though it's not scheduled yet. But I think it will happen," Susan nodded confidently.
For some reason, she was sure Seb would remarry her soon. The thought made her happy and content.
"Congratulations to you both," George said, eyes filled with disappointment.
"Thanks. I have to go now. Goodbye!" Susan, aware of his disappointment, ended the conversation and quickly left.
She didn't look back even after getting into the taxi. She didn't want to see George's disappointed face.
Susan had heard things about George. He was rumored to have been in a long-term, on-and-off relationship with Vivian, an art lover who refused to settle down. During their breaks, George had relationships with other women, but always returned to Vivian. Those women were just distractions; his main focus was Vivian.
Susan learned this after being beaten. Luckily, she hadn't gotten involved with George, or the beating would have confirmed her interference in his relationship with Vivian.
But she couldn't fall for George because Seb had left too deep a mark on her heart.
Today, Susan did something against her principles. While working at the firm, she discovered Fiona's fraudulent claims. Though the amounts were small, the behavior was egregious. She had always wanted to tell George but left the job after being beaten.
Today, Fiona pushed her to the limit, and her attitude towards Maria was infuriating.
Susan had already resigned and shouldn't have gotten involved, but in a moment of impulse, she decided to act. She didn't regret it and wasn't afraid of Fiona causing trouble as Fiona was the one with the problem!
