Chapter 281 Spanking Spring

Susan had never used high-end cosmetics, but she recognized the brands. She knew many women at work used them, but they were pricey.

"How much do these cost?" she asked, eyeing the bottles.

Isabella held up her hand.

"Five thousand dollars?" Susan's eyes widened.

"And these aren't even the top-tier ones. The best ones cost that much for just one bottle," Isabella added.

Susan chuckled, "You should pamper your skin and maybe start looking for a partner soon."

"That's the plan. I'm in my thirties now, and if I don't take care of my skin, no man will be interested. Here, take this one!" Isabella handed a bottle to Susan.

Susan glanced at it but didn't take it. ""I appreciate the offer, but I think I'll pass. Spending a fortune on skincare just doesn't feel right to me. Being a mom of two keeps me busy enough, and honestly, who needs all that fancy stuff to feel good about themselves?"

Isabella shot her a sharp look. "Are you trying to upset me? Even with two kids, you have several great guys chasing you. It's a mystery to me. I mean, if I'm not lacking in looks, personality, or character compared to you, why am I still searching for Mr. Right?"

Isabella stood up, checked out her own butt and waist, and touched her face, feeling frustrated.

Susan laughed and gave her a push. "Your guy just hasn't shown up yet."

"How much longer? Until I'm fifty?" Isabella turned and covered her face as she headed to the bathroom.

Susan shook her head, amused and exasperated. They always had a good laugh together.

Sometimes Susan marveled at how close she was to Isabella, even more than real sisters.

She wondered if Henry had really quit his job at the school. Dorothy wouldn't divorce him, but Henry seemed determined this time. They were bound to have a fierce battle. Would this worry Catherine? Susan frowned, but there was nothing she could do to help.

Two months flew by, and spring was approaching, bringing warmer weather.

That afternoon, Spring refused to nap. No matter how Susan coaxed her, she wouldn't sleep, which frustrated Susan.

She had dozens of orders to pack and planned to do it while Spring napped. But today, Spring just wouldn't sleep.

"Sleep!" Susan finally pressed Spring down on the pillow, not letting her move.

Spring, only a year old, naturally resisted and began to cry.

Seeing Spring cry, Susan's anger flared, and she smacked Spring's bottom twice.

"Why are you crying? It's the middle of the day, and you won't sleep. If you don't sleep, I'll spank you again!" Susan's raised voice made Spring cry even harder.

Susan's frustration boiled over. She let go of Spring and yelled, "Do you know how tired I am? I want to sleep too, but I have to pack orders. If these packages don't go out, we'll starve. Do you get that?"

Spring, just over a year old, couldn't understand. She only knew Susan was mad and spanking her, so she cried even louder.

Seeing Spring's chubby face covered in snot and tears, Susan felt both annoyed and helpless. She knocked over a pile of goods next to the sofa bed and held her head in her hands, overwhelmed.

Amidst Spring's cries, Susan couldn't help but reflect on her own life and how it seemed to be in a perpetual state of chaos.

However, didn't Catherine manage to keep things afloat with herself and Dorothy all those years back? With Dorothy and her being older than Spring, they didn't need as much of mom's attention. Even without a ton of formal education or technical savvy, they still made it work and flourished, didn't they?

Thinking of this, Susan glanced at Spring crawling towards her and felt a mix of sorrow and tenderness.

Susan reached out to hold Spring, intending to comfort her, but just then, her phone rang.

Seeing Seb's number on the screen, Susan frowned but thought it might be Hayden missing her. After all, Hayden hadn't visited in two weeks.

Since moving in with Isabella, Hayden had come a few times, but the place was too cramped. Hayden, being a boy and very mischievous, made the place even messier. Susan didn't want to inconvenience Isabella, so she tried to limit Hayden's visits. However, she missed him dearly and was determined to work hard for a couple of years to buy a small house where the three of them could live together.

Amidst Spring's cries, Susan answered the phone. "Hello?"

"Why is Spring crying?" Seb's voice came through urgently.

Hearing the urgency in Seb's voice, Susan frowned and replied, "She wouldn't sleep, so I spanked her."

Susan didn't know why she admitted it. Maybe her earlier frustration made her eager to vent, but she ended up confiding in Seb, showing just how dejected she felt.

"Why did you spank her? She's just a baby; what does she know?" Seb complained.

Hearing this, Susan retorted, "Do you know how hard and exhausting it is to take care of a child? Why don't you come and do it then!"

Seb paused for a couple of seconds, then suppressed his emotions and said, "Hayden misses you and Spring, so I'm bringing him over. I miss Spring too. Can I come up and see her now?"

This was a rule Susan had set for Seb in recent months. He could only come up to see Spring with her permission.

To avoid angering Susan, Seb had strictly adhered to this rule. Since Seb no longer pestered Susan, she felt comfortable letting him come up to see Spring.

"Alright, come up," Susan said with a frown.

Soon, the doorbell rang.

Susan put down the still-crying Spring and went to open the door.

Seb glanced at Susan and then rushed to Spring, picking her up from the sofa bed.
