Chapter 257 Explanation
Susan's eyes widened as she remembered everything, becoming a bit incoherent. "But after we made up, we were about to get married, and I even met Hayden. Why didn't you tell me about him then?" she inquired.
Seb looked deeply into her eyes. "Do you remember the day we were getting our marriage certificate, and I said I had a big surprise for you?"
Susan thought back and nodded. She did remember that.
Seb nodded too. "I wanted to tell you about Hayden right after we got the certificate, but something unexpected happened."
Susan sneered, "What do you mean? You didn't come to get the certificate with me. Instead, you held a press conference with Cynthia to announce your marriage. Seb, how long are you going to keep lying? Didn't you say you loved Cynthia and I was just a fling? Didn't you change your mind at the last minute?"
"Cynthia kidnapped Hayden," Seb interrupted.
Susan looked at him in shock.
"That day, after my meeting, I was heading to the Vital Records Office to meet you, but Cynthia called. She had Hayden!" Seb said.
Seeing Seb's pained expression, Susan hesitated but still wanted to hear more.
"Hayden is my son. I couldn't ignore his safety. I had to do what Cynthia said and hold the press conference to announce our marriage," Seb continued.
Susan hesitated, then sneered, "Seb, your storytelling is getting better. Do you think I'll believe this? Even if Cynthia threatened you back then, what about later? You had plenty of chances to explain. But what did you do? You just kept hurting me."
After shouting, Susan stood up and walked towards the door.
She couldn't stay here any longer. The atmosphere was suffocating, and she didn't want to hear Seb's nonsense anymore.
Seeing her about to leave, Seb stood up and grabbed her shoulder. "Susan, can you let me finish?"
Struggling, Susan said, "I don't want to hear your lies. None of it is true!"
She remembered that day, right here, when Seb told her in front of Cynthia that she was just a fling and he had made the mistake all men make.
With one sentence, Seb crushed their emotions and left her in a humiliating position. Her heart broke then and still aches now!
"I know I hurt you deeply. It's all my fault. If you hate me, you can hit me, scold me, or even stab me again. But please, let me finish," Seb pleaded for the first time in his life.
"My heart's already shattered because of you. What good would it do to hit you, scold you, or even stab you? Seb, I'm begging you, let me live in peace, okay? Stop bothering me! And stop making up these ridiculous excuses. I'm really tired. I don't want to deal with you anymore," Susan said, tears streaming down her face.
Susan knew she shouldn't cry in front of Seb. It wasn't just a sign of weakness; it would also make Seb think she still cared about him. But she couldn't control herself. Thinking about the past pains, her tears just kept flowing.
"I just hope you can let me state the facts. I just hope you don't miss out on Hayden again. I promise that after I finish, I will respect your decision and won't bother you again!" Seb said, frowning, his eyes full of earnestness.
Susan had never witnessed this side of Seb before. She grappled with the reality for a moment, her suspicions about Hayden still lingering. What if Seb spoke the truth? That would mean Hayden was her son, and Susan couldn't bear the thought of missing out on her own flesh and blood.
Giving Seb a cautious look as his hand rested on her shoulder, she finally relented, saying, "Fine, I'll hear you out, but please refrain from touching me again!"
Hearing this, Seb immediately let go of Susan's shoulder. Susan turned and sat back on the sofa, deliberately keeping her distance from him.
As Susan distanced herself, Seb couldn't help but feel a tinge of sadness mixed with a sense of powerlessness.
Turning away, Seb settled back into his earlier stance before continuing, "My original plan was to find Hayden, then confront Cynthia and explain everything to you so that we could live happily as a family."
"Did something unexpected happen again?" Susan asked with a sneer.
Clearly, she didn't believe Seb's so-called reasons at all.
Seb didn't mind Susan's reaction and continued, "Because Cynthia locked Hayden in a newly renovated room with a lot of unventilated chemicals, Hayden, who was just over a year old and had a weak immune system, developed acute leukemia."
Hearing this, Susan felt a bit heartbroken, but she still concealed her true emotions. "You said Hayden has leukemia?"
Thinking of Hayden's cute chubby face, Susan couldn't accept it.
Seb nodded and said, "Hayden's illness is all my fault, so I had to focus on treating him first. My desire to explain things to you faded. Then, as Hayden's condition worsened, I didn't dare to tell you about him. After all, you had already lost Hayden once. I knew that if I told you the truth again, you wouldn't be able to handle it!"
Susan stared at Seb in shock and asked, "So, how is Hayden now?"
"Don't worry, Hayden's all better now, which is why I brought him to find you," Seb replied.
Hearing this, Susan hesitated for a moment, then sneered, "Seb, do you think I'm a fool? Leukemia just gets cured like that? It's too easy!"
Susan believed Seb was lying, and the worst part was that he was using Hayden's health as an excuse. She really couldn't sit here any longer.
