Chapter 850 Heart Like Dead Ashes
Seb's stare was making Susan squirm. She had on this long dress that showed off her shoulders and most of her back, cinched at the waist and hugging her hips. Plus, there was this high slit at the thigh, flashing a lot of leg with every step.
She remembered when she bought the dress, Seb had been kinda grumpy, saying it was too revealing.
But the dress was super elegant, making her skin look all glowy and smooth. The store clerk had hyped her up, so she went for it. Susan recalled that when she wore this dress to a banquet, Seb had insisted she wear a shawl. She had teased him for being so uptight, pointing out that all the other women were dressed similarly.
That argument felt like it happened just yesterday, but now everything was different, leaving her with a bunch of mixed feelings.
Seb's eyes finally landed on Marc, who was holding Susan's hand, and his expression turned icy.
Marc had already picked up on the weird vibe between Seb and Susan, so he quickly let go of her hand and stepped forward with a smile, saying, "Mr. Anderson, look who I brought for you!"
Seb gripped his glass tightly and said coldly, "Marc, did you invite this lady here?"
Seb's tone was no longer friendly, a stark contrast to how he had been earlier.
Marc quickly waved his hands and explained, "No, no, I just ran into her by chance when I went to the restroom. It seems you two are really fated to meet. Last time she served us at the bowling alley, and today we meet her here again, so I brought her over."
After hearing Marc's explanation, Seb didn't say anything more and just stared at his glass.
The atmosphere got awkward. Marc glanced at Susan and quickly said, "Miss, why don't you sit here and chat with Mr. Anderson? I'll go get some more drinks."
Marc nudged Susan to sit next to Seb and then found an excuse to leave.
Sitting next to Seb, Susan noticed that he didn't even want to look at her, which made her feel really sad.
"Are you unhappy to see me?" Susan asked tentatively.
"Why are you here?" Seb finally glanced at Susan after a long pause.
Sensing his anger, Susan carefully replied, "I miss you, but I haven't had a chance to see you these days. When I heard you were coming here today, I followed."
After speaking, Susan lowered her head like a kid who had done something wrong.
Hearing her say she missed him, Seb frowned, and his face darkened even more.
After a while, Susan added, "I know you never liked me wearing such clothes, let alone coming to places like this. But I couldn't help myself. I really wanted to see you, even if it was just to say a few words."
He still didn't speak, only furrowing his brows even more.
Susan looked at Seb with sad eyes and said softly, "I know you're going to marry Ellie soon. You'll be busy with wedding stuffs. You won't have time to see me anymore."
There was this long, awkward silence.
Susan didn't know what to say, so she just sat there quietly with Seb.
"Is that all?" Seb finally broke the silence.
Susan saw the distance and coldness in his eyes, but she still said earnestly, "And I love you! So much, I can't control it."
Hearing this, Seb squeezed his glass and then downed its contents in one gulp.
"Seb!" Susan looked at him with furrowed brows.
Seb looked at her seriously and said, "I'm sorry, I don't love you. I'm about to marry the person I love, so we shouldn't see each other anymore."
After saying that, Seb turned his face away, not looking at Susan again.
As he expected, Susan's face was soon covered in tears.
Wiping her tears, Susan made one last effort. "Seb, give me a chance, and give yourself a chance too, okay? Once you marry Ellie, I won't bother you anymore. But I can't accept this, I really can't. It's not that you don't love me anymore, it's that you've forgotten me."
"If I loved you that much, how could I forget you alone? Why haven't I forgotten anything else?" Seb asked, seeing her tears, knowing he would soften.
Seb's question left Susan at a loss for words. She could only shake her head and say, "I don't know."
"So I don't love you, or at least not deeply enough. Since this is fate's decision, we should accept it. Ellie has done a lot for me, and I can't let her down," Seb said, looking deeply at Susan.
Hearing this, Susan knew she had no hope left. Continuing to entangle would be futile.
The next moment, Susan felt as if she had been sentenced to death, losing all interest in life.
Susan glanced at the wine on the coffee table, suddenly picked up a glass of red wine, and drank it all in one go.
Seb reached out to stop her but then withdrew his hand halfway.
Susan placed the glass back on the coffee table and stood up. Not being able to handle her alcohol well, she felt dizzy after drinking such a large glass.
With tears in her eyes, she looked at Seb and said, "Don't worry, I won't bother you again. Goodbye!"
After speaking, Susan turned and left.
Watching Susan's departing figure, Seb clenched his fist.
Susan had given him an unprecedented feeling, making him feel a bit out of control. He had always been confident in his self-control around women.
After Susan walked a few steps in sadness, Marc came up to her, blocking her way.
"Hey, why are you leaving so soon? Aren't you going to chat and drink with Mr. Anderson?" Marc asked, surprised.
Susan glanced blankly at the dance floor and smiled bitterly. "Mr. Anderson doesn't want to see me."
"How could that be?" Marc's gaze drifted to Seb not far away.
Seb was indeed looking at Susan at that moment.
Understanding, Marc smiled and said, "May I have the honor of inviting you to dance?"
Hearing this, Susan looked at the few couples dancing on the dance floor and smiled. "Of course."
