Chapter 497 Anxious
When Susan heard that, she couldn't help but laugh and roll her eyes. She gave Seb a playful shove and said, "Seriously, how are you not even a little embarrassed?"
She knew he was just messing around. Even in a tense moment, he could crack a joke, showing that beneath his usually serious exterior, he had a hidden sense of humor.
"Because I got no shame!" Seb grinned, flashing his pearly whites.
Susan was at her wit's end with Seb. The more she tried to get him to tone it down, the more outrageous he got.
She sighed, throwing her hands up. "I swear, there's no dealing with someone as thick-skinned as you."
Seb just laughed harder, getting even more ridiculous...
The next morning, Seb took off on a business trip, while Susan stayed in bed for another hour before dragging herself up.
After freshening up, she got dressed and headed downstairs, ready to face the day.
By then, Kathy had already gone out to grab groceries, Spring was still snoozing, and Mary, seeing Susan come down, quickly said, "Mrs. Anderson, Mr. Anderson left your breakfast in the thermos before he left. Let me get it for you."
"No worries, I'll grab it myself," Susan smiled and made her way to the kitchen.
She opened the thermos to find a hot latte and some freshly toasted bread.
Sitting at the dining table, Susan munched on her breakfast, thinking about the cozy night before. Meanwhile, Mary was tidying up and said, "Mrs. Anderson, you and Mr. Anderson have such a sweet relationship."
Susan looked up at Mary, who was giving her a look full of envy.
Susan couldn't help but think Mary must've heard the noise from last night.
Blushing, Susan quickly took a sip of her coffee to hide her embarrassment and said with a smile, "Mary, you and your husband seem pretty close too. I hear you chatting on the phone a lot."
Mary laughed. "Yeah, my husband might not make much money, but he's great in other ways."
Susan was a bit puzzled. Other ways?
Seeing Susan's confused look, Mary blushed. "He's really good to me and the kids. We don't see each other often, but when we do, he's all over me."
Susan got it and quickly looked down to focus on her food.
But Mary kept going, "You know, this job pays well and you treat me great, but I can't be with my husband every day. He's back home taking care of the kids and the farm. You wouldn't believe how many women in the countryside are super flirty, always trying to snag a man. I just hope my husband can resist. If I find out he's been unfaithful, I'll divorce him on the spot!"
Susan almost choked on her coffee after hearing this. She realized that the noise from last night must've stirred up some feelings in Mary, who's been away from her husband.
Quickly finishing her coffee, Susan wiped her mouth with a napkin and stood up. "Mary, tomorrow's the weekend. Since I don't have to work, why don't you take a couple of days off to visit your husband and kids? It'll give you some peace of mind."
After saying that, Susan turned and left the dining room.
Mary quickly followed her out. "Mrs. Anderson, I don't feel uneasy working here. At my age, where can I find such a well-paying job without skills or education? And I can't bear to leave Spring. I've raised her since she was a baby."
Seeing Mary's worried look, Susan knew she had misunderstood. "Mary, Seb, and I are super happy with you. There's no hidden meaning. We're getting married in a few days, and after the wedding, we're taking you and the kids to Averlake for our honeymoon. You won't have time off for a while. Don't worry, I won't dock your pay for these two days. Go home and take care of things so you can feel at ease when we leave."
Hearing that her pay wouldn't be docked, Mary was overjoyed. "Thank you so much. You're so kind. I'll go and come back quickly."
"I'm heading out now. Don't let Spring sleep too late," Susan instructed and quickly left.
Mary eagerly saw her out.
After leaving the villa, Susan clutched her chest and laughed, then took out her phone and made a call.
As soon as the call connected, Seb's deep voice came through. "Are you awake?"
Susan could hear the sound of a car driving, knowing he was still on the road.
"I've already had breakfast and left," Susan said with a smile.
"How was the breakfast I left for you?" Seb's voice was calm and collected.
"It was good, but I just stuffed it in my mouth without tasting it," Susan said with a hint of complaint.
"What do you mean? Are you feeling unwell?" Seb's tone immediately became tense.
Hearing Seb's concern, Susan laughed and said, "Nope. I just chatted with Mary for a while. I gave her two days off to visit her family."
Hearing this, Seb sighed in relief. "Tomorrow is the weekend. You'll have to manage on your own. You're a good hostess, being considerate of her concerns about home."
"It's because we..." Susan looked around to make sure no one was around before whispering, "We made too much noise last night. She's worried her husband might be seduced by other women in the countryside."
Hearing this, Seb laughed heartily.
Susan then complained, "It's all your fault. I told you to keep it down last night, but you wouldn't listen. Now Mary is all anxious."
"It's all my fault. Next time, I'll get her a new pair of headphones," Seb said with a laugh.
Hearing this, Susan rolled her eyes. She thought he would say he'd be more careful next time, but instead, he planned to get her headphones.
"I've never seen anyone as domineering as you. Alright, I have to go to work now. I'm going to be late. I'll visit your dad and my mom during lunch break. I'm hanging up," Susan said into the phone.
"Are you mad at me getting headphones for another woman? I'll get you a pair too," Seb teased.
"I don't want to argue with you. I'm hanging up," Susan said loudly into the phone before hanging up.
