Chapter 1268 The Gilded Cage
Hearing this, Daryl paused for a moment, then carefully studied Cecilia's face before saying, "Cecilia, don't you love your job? Why are you suddenly quitting?"
Seeing Daryl's intense gaze, Cecilia lowered her head slightly and forced a smile. "Actually, I've thought about it for a long time. Since I married you and joined the Fields family, I need to prioritize you and the family. My future role is to be a good wife to you and a good daughter-in-law to the Fields family. Our energy is limited, and if I continue working, I won't be able to balance both home and work. It's better to focus on one."
Daryl hesitated for a moment, then stepped forward and held Cecilia's shoulders. "No, this isn't what you truly want. Did you hear something last night?"
"I..." Cecilia's eyes welled up with tears, and she kept her head down, afraid to look up and let the tears fall.
Seeing Cecilia's hesitation, Daryl gently lifted her chin, raising her head.
In the next moment, Daryl saw her tear-filled eyes.
Cecilia's grievances were now impossible to hide.
Seeing Cecilia like this, Daryl's brow furrowed, his heart softened, and he pulled her tightly into his arms.
"I'm sorry. It's my fault for not being able to convince my mom. But it's not to the point where you have to quit right away. Give me some time, and I'll find a way to persuade her..." Daryl said guiltily.
Cecilia interrupted him. "Daryl, I don't want you to have conflicts with your parents because of me. Last night, Mom had a heart attack, and you were probably scared too. It's better if I quit. I've thought about it. If I don't quit now, I'll have to quit eventually. It's just a matter of time."
Their eyes met, both thinking of each other, feeling each other's pain.
"Cecilia, I'm sorry. I don't know what to say." Daryl was at a loss for words, moved by Cecilia's understanding.
Hearing this, Cecilia smiled and reached out to straighten his suit collar. "Since you know I'm suffering, you better make it up to me."
Daryl smiled. "I'll spend my whole life making it up to you."
Cecilia smiled contentedly.
Suddenly, Daryl bent down and scooped Cecilia up in his arms.
"What are you doing?" Cecilia felt dizzy and quickly wrapped her arms around Daryl's neck.
"I'm making it up to you," Daryl said with a grin.
"How are you going to make it up to me?" Cecilia asked, tilting her chin.
Daryl leaned in and whispered in her ear, "In bed."
"You're so annoying! I knew you weren't serious!" Cecilia laughed and playfully slapped Daryl's shoulder.
"We're married now. This is as serious as it gets," Daryl said matter-of-factly.
Then, Daryl moved to place Cecilia on the bed.
Cecilia pushed against his shoulders. "Stop it, we're going to be late!"
"It doesn't matter. I'm the boss; no one can dock my pay. And since you're quitting today, you don't have to worry about it either," Daryl teased.
"Even if I don't care about the pay, Mom will have something to say," Cecilia said, genuinely worried.
Daryl finally let go of Cecilia but still leaned in to give her a firm kiss on the cheek. "I'll make it up to you tonight."
Cecilia laughed and ran out of the room.
Daryl watched her leave with a smile.
At breakfast, Daryl told his parents, "Dad, Mom, Cecilia has decided. She's submitting her resignation today."
Isaac and Azalea were momentarily stunned.
Azalea quickly regained her composure.
Isaac nodded happily. "Good. Once your mom and I are gone, you and Cecilia will be the heads of the Fields family. The responsibility will be on your shoulders. Cecilia, we will remember your sacrifice and will never treat you unfairly."
"Thank you, Dad," Cecilia said with a slight smile.
She glanced at Azalea, who still didn't look pleased.
Azalea said, "Since you have married into the Fields family, you should prioritize the family. As long as you follow the rules, we will take care of you."
Azalea's words were harsh, and Cecilia lowered her head, eating in silence.
Suddenly, a large, warm hand grasped hers, giving her strength.
Cecilia looked up and met Daryl's comforting gaze, and she couldn't help but smile.
All the troubles and unkindness seemed insignificant with such a good partner by her side.
God was fair. When one door closed, a window opened.
Daryl was that window, giving her emotional and life stability.
That morning, Cecilia handed in her resignation to her editor.
Marcella heard the news immediately and pulled Cecilia into the break room.
"I heard you're quitting. Is it true?" Marcella asked, surprised.
Cecilia nodded. "Yeah, I was just about to tell you."
Marcella's surprise faded. "I figured you'd quit eventually after marrying Daryl. You were just holding out."
"How did you know?" Cecilia asked, frowning.
"Isn't it obvious? Even the wives of small business owners don't work outside. They either stay home or help with the family business," Marcella laughed.
Cecilia thought about it and realized Marcella was right. She just hadn't seen it that way.
"I really like this job. I enjoyed chatting with you all. I won't have that anymore," Cecilia sighed.
"Don't be ungrateful. We all wish we could marry into wealth," Marcella said.
"Being a rich wife is like being a bird in a gilded cage," Cecilia sighed, already envisioning a boring future.
"Well, I don't even have a gilded cage. But if you get bored, you can always invite me out for lunch. Your treat!" Marcella joked.
