Chapter 467 Schadenfreude

Carol's tone had a hint of gloating.

Susan felt a cold stab in her chest when she heard Carol call her "that woman." It was like Carol never saw her as her daughter-in-law, Seb's wife, or the mother of her grandkids.

"Mom, why are you so happy they had a fight?" That was Seb's sister, Rylee, chiming in.

Rylee had been off studying in Averlake for a few years and was supposed to be coming back soon. Looked like Carol was on a video call with her.

Carol started griping, "You don't get it. Seb married that woman once before, and I was against it from the start. I humiliated her in front of everyone, so she probably hates my guts. Now, Seb treats her like gold, and my objections don't mean squat. They're already hitched with two kids. Their marriage is locked in. I just want to make her life tough, to break her spirit. In the future, if I tell her to jump, she'll ask how high. You don't know how stubborn she is, like a wild horse that won't be tamed. I gotta break her!"

Susan's hands shook as she held the plate of grapes.

She never thought Carol was making her life hell just to break her, to make sure she wouldn't fight back in the future!

Rylee, trying to be the voice of reason, said on the video call, "Mom, Susan's a person, not a horse. People have feelings. If you're nice to her, she'll be nice to you. You should stop causing trouble, or it'll make things hard for Seb."

Carol shot back, "Why should I? The Anderson family has a huge business. She marries in and becomes Mrs. Susan Anderson, and she gets to enjoy all the perks. Back in the day, Todd and I had to hustle. Why should she get to live the good life just by marrying in? I need her to show some respect and obedience!"

Rylee wanted to say more, but Susan had hit her limit.

The next moment, Susan marched into the living room with the plate of grapes.

Carol, still on the video call, looked up and was shocked to see Susan standing there with a stern face, holding the plate.

"Rylee, I gotta go. Talk to you later." Carol quickly ended the call, ignoring Rylee's protests.

"When did you get back?" Carol snapped at Susan.

Susan set the plate of grapes in front of Carol and sneered. "I forgot my phone. As soon as I came in, I heard you asking Kathy to wash the grapes. Kathy went out to buy groceries and hasn't come back, so I washed them for you. Didn't want to interrupt your call with Rylee."

Carol's face turned red with embarrassment and anger because Susan must've heard everything. Susan's cold eyes were locked on her, and she knew she was busted.

The next moment, Carol reached out and knocked over the plate of grapes!

The plate smashed on the floor, and grapes went rolling everywhere, making a huge mess.

Carol pointed at Susan and snapped, "This is exactly why I didn't want you marrying Seb. Girls from families like yours have no class. Didn't your mom teach you not to eavesdrop? You have no morals!"

Dragging her mom into it was the last straw for Susan. "I call you 'Mom' out of respect. Before you came, I thought if you could accept me and be kind, I'd be good to you and Seb. But what have you done? You torment me every day, wear me out, and stir up trouble between Seb and me. You get a kick out of our fights. I've never seen a mother like you! And let me tell you, say whatever you want about me, but leave my mom out of it. If you don't, I won't stand for it!"

Susan was so mad her face went pale, and she pointed right at Carol.

Carol, who was used to being the queen bee, had never been talked to like this, especially not by someone she looked down on like Susan. She was livid and raised her hand to slap Susan.

But Susan was quick. She grabbed Carol's wrist and glared at her with steely eyes.

Susan's fierce look made Carol nervous. She warned, "What are you doing? Gonna hit me? Hitting your mother-in-law is a big deal. If you lay a finger on me, Seb won't forgive you!"

Even though Carol was the one who tried to hit her, she twisted it around to blame Susan. Susan couldn't stand Carol's hypocritical act.

She let go of Carol's wrist and, in her anger, gave her a shove.

Carol stumbled but managed to grab the sofa for support.

Seeing this, Susan felt a pang of worry that Carol might fall. But when she saw Carol steady herself, her expression went back to normal.

Carol plopped down on the sofa, crying and wailing, "A daughter-in-law is hitting her mother-in-law! This is outrageous! You little witch, I won't let Seb forgive you when he gets back!"

Just then, footsteps echoed from the stairs.

As Susan stood there, watching Carol's drama, Todd came down from upstairs.

Seeing Carol crying on the sofa, Todd frowned and asked, "What's going on now?"

Seeing Todd, Carol's eyes lit up like she found her savior. She grabbed Todd and pointed at Susan. "She hit me! I'm her mother-in-law. You need to teach her a lesson!"

Susan knew there was no point in explaining, so she didn't even try.

Todd looked at Susan and then turned to Carol, "Have you had enough? Aren't you worried Kathy and Mary will come back and see this?"

"She hit me! Are you my husband or not?" Carol screamed.

Todd looked Carol up and down and asked, "You said she hit you. Where did she hit you? Where's the injury?"

Carol was caught off guard by the question.

After a moment, she stammered, "She's a woman. How much strength could she have? Even if she hit me, there wouldn't be any injuries."
