Chapter 1123 A Hard Life

Although she started from the bottom, Cecilia was still very satisfied. After all, Vogue Vista was an influential magazine, and even the lowest salary wasn't too bad. Plus, she could learn a lot here.

Holding the employment notice Seraphine gave her, Cecilia easily completed the onboarding process at HR and immediately went to find Calista.

Cecilia had learned about her work in advance. She was in charge of a column in Vogue Vista magazine called "Love Talk," which focused on recording the love stories of urban workers, showcasing real, romantic, and heartwarming tales to the readers.

After navigating through several turns, Cecilia arrived at the "Love Talk" office, which was a relatively large room with five or six staff members inside.

As soon as Cecilia walked in, a young female employee sitting by the door smiled at her.

Cecilia approached and whispered, "I'm Cecilia, I just completed the onboarding process. May I know who Ms. Day is?"

The female employee pointed to a lady sitting at the main desk inside and smiled, giving Cecilia a friendly greeting.

Cecilia then walked to Calista's desk and beamed, "Hello, Ms. Day. I'm Cecilia, the new hire."

Hearing this, Calista looked up, leaned back in her swivel chair, crossed her arms, and scrutinized Cecilia from head to toe with a hint of disdain in her eyes.

Cecilia felt that Calista's gaze was very impolite, especially with a look of contempt. From her eyes, Cecilia sensed that she would not be easy to get along with.

Indeed, while Calista was sizing her up, Cecilia also took the opportunity to observe her.

Calista appeared to be around twenty-seven or twenty-eight years old, wearing a striking fuchsia blazer with a very low-cut top underneath, revealing part of her breast. She had shoulder-length short hair, heavy makeup, large earrings, and exaggerated jewelry on her wrists and fingers. Her eyebrows and eyes were very expressive, clearly a shrewd woman.

After sizing her up, Calista impatiently said, "You're new here. We have an unwritten rule in our department: from now on, the tasks of cleaning and buying lunch and afternoon tea for our column are all yours. I see you have no work experience, so take the time to learn from them; they are your seniors. That empty spot over there is yours, go sit down!"

Then Calista pointed to a corner spot.

Cecilia nodded and then walked to the most inconspicuous spot in the corner and sat down.

During this time, Cecilia went to the bathroom twice to vomit secretly. After all, she couldn't let anyone know she was pregnant. If they found out, she probably wouldn't last long here.

No company wanted to hire a pregnant woman. The contract stated a one-month probation period, and once she passed it, she could sign a long-term labor contract. By then, even if the company found out she was pregnant, it wouldn't matter much.

For the next week, Cecilia worked very hard and got along well with her colleagues.

Cecilia found that her colleagues were quite easygoing, especially the young girl sitting by the door, Marcella Shaw, who was simple, talkative, and very kind. So, Cecilia got along well with her.

In short, the most difficult person to get along with in their column group was Calista. However, Cecilia respected her and followed her instructions, so the week passed without incident.

During this week, Cecilia mainly did some miscellaneous tasks.

Every day, she was busy copying documents, delivering files, cleaning, buying lunch, getting takeout, and proofreading texts.

Despite these odd jobs, it was tiring, especially being pregnant. Her skin looked bad, so she used light makeup to hide it. She also lost weight.

During this time, Susan and Isabella visited Cecilia at her small apartment in the city center and brought her a lot of supplements for pregnant women.

Seeing Cecilia's poor complexion and hard work, they advised her to stop working for now and resume after the morning sickness passed.

However, Cecilia firmly declined their kind offer.

Because by the time the morning sickness was mostly gone, it would be after three months of pregnancy. If she waited until three or four months to find a job, the probation period would be one to three months, and by then, her belly would be noticeable. It would be too difficult to find a job then.

Sensing Cecilia's determination, Susan and Isabella could only advise her to take care of herself and not overwork.

That morning, Calista threw a thick stack of documents on Cecilia's desk and instructed, "Find all the illustrations needed in these drafts before the afternoon shift. The graphic designer will come to pick them up in the afternoon."

Hearing this, Cecilia looked down at the thick stack of documents on her desk and frowned. "Ms. Day, it's almost eleven o'clock now. This stack is so thick, I might not be able to finish it before the afternoon shift."

However, Calista condescendingly said, "That's your problem to solve. You can't delay my work!"

After saying that, Calista turned and left.

Watching Calista leave the office, Cecilia frowned. She thought, 'It looks like I won't be able to eat lunch or rest.'

Then, Marcella came over and whispered, "Don't worry, I'm almost done with my work. I'll help you find half of them, and we can finish it together and then go out for lunch."

Hearing this, Cecilia felt very embarrassed and said, "That's too much trouble for you."

But Marcella smiled and said, "Next time I have trouble, you can help me."

"Sure." Hearing this, Cecilia gladly accepted Marcella's help.

They worked until everyone else had returned from lunch before they finished the task.

"Finally done!" Marcella stretched.

Cecilia stood up, stretched her numb shoulders, and smiled. "I'll treat you to lunch."

"Sure, there's a burger place downstairs that's really good." Marcella grabbed her bag and pulled Cecilia out of the office.

Fifteen minutes later, they were sitting in a bright and clean restaurant, eating burgers and chatting.
