Chapter 76 Save The Mother
Kathy dropped her gaze, avoiding Henry's eyes. "I've been looking after her for so long, and I've barely seen her husband. Now I can't even reach him. They say he's gone abroad."
Henry, usually so composed, felt a surge of anger. "She's about to give birth, and he skips town?"
Just then, the delivery room door swung open, and a female doctor stepped out with a file and pen. "Where are Susan's family members?"
Henry rushed over. "Doctor, how is she?"
"The situation isn't great, but we're doing our best. Are you her husband? We need a family member to sign here." She handed the file and pen to Henry.
Henry knew only family could sign, but he didn't care about the rules. He scribbled his name.
The doctor took the file and went back inside.
The wait was agonizing. Two hours passed with no news.
Suddenly, a group appeared at the stairway. The man in the black cashmere coat at the front hurried over to Kathy.
"How is she?" Seb grabbed Kathy's shoulders, his face full of worry.
Carol and Cynthia followed him to the delivery room.
"The doctor said it's a difficult labor," Kathy replied, scared. She'd never seen Seb this anxious.
Seb let go of Kathy, running a hand through his hair, eyes glued to the delivery room door.
Henry walked up to Seb, his voice icy. "Are you Susan's husband?"
Seb's face darkened at the sight of Henry. "What are you doing here?"
Henry threw a punch at Seb, then pointed angrily. "How have you been taking care of Susan? She's about to give birth, and you're off gallivanting. Do you know how dangerous she is?"
Carol and Cynthia stepped forward, ready to escalate.
"Who are you to hit my son?" Carol demanded.
"And what gives you the right to lecture him?" Cynthia added.
Seb motioned for them to back off. He grabbed Henry by the collar. "What are you doing here? Who let you come?"
"She has no one else. Shouldn't I be here?" Henry shot back.
"I'm here now. That's enough. Leave!" Seb's cheek was already swelling.
"No way. I'm not leaving until I know she's safe!" Henry was clearly worried.
Seb frowned and punched Henry back.
Henry hit the ground but quickly got up, grappling with Seb.
"Susan is my woman. Who do you think you are?"
"I may be nobody, but I don't trust you with her!"
"Had enough yet?"
"I don't care how many times you hit me, as long as she's safe!"
The two men were locked in a fierce brawl, and Carol and Cynthia couldn't pull them apart. Just then, the delivery room door swung open, and the doctor from earlier stepped out.
Seeing the fight, the doctor immediately intervened, "What are you doing? This is a hospital. If you want to fight, take it outside!"
Her words worked; Seb and Henry stopped instantly.
"Doctor, how is my wife?" Seb grabbed the doctor's arm.
The doctor looked at Seb, puzzled. "What's your wife's name?"
"Susan Wilson," Seb replied.
The doctor glanced at Henry, who also had a bruised face. "Didn't you say you were Susan's husband? Why is there another husband? What's going on?"
"I am Susan's husband!" Seb glared at Henry.
"But he signed the papers earlier," the doctor said, pulling out the file.
Seb snatched it and saw Henry's name. He got even angrier, grabbing Henry by the collar. "What are you trying to do, pretending to be Susan's husband?"
"We couldn't reach you, and the doctor needed a signature. Should we have waited for you to come back? Can childbirth wait?" Henry shot back.
"Enough, stop arguing. Susan's situation is critical. I'm here to ask her husband if, in case of an emergency, we should save the mother or the baby?" the doctor asked loudly.
Both Seb and Henry were stunned; they hadn't realized how serious it was.
The next moment, they both said in unison, "Save the mother!"
"Since you both agree, we'll proceed that way," the doctor said, glancing at them before heading back to the delivery room.
Cynthia and Carol exchanged glances.
Carol walked up to Henry, her tone stiff. "Sir, no matter what your past relationship with Susan was, she is now Seb's wife and a member of the Anderson family. Please leave immediately!"
Henry couldn't find the words to respond.
"Exactly, you seem so refined, yet you're here competing for attention with Susan's husband in public. Isn't that shameless?" Cynthia added sarcastically.
Henry had no choice but to leave. Before he did, he warned Seb, "If anything happens to Susan, I won't let you off!"
With that, he turned and left.
After he was gone, Cynthia pretended to ask, "Seb, who is that man, and what is his relationship with Susan?"
"Is that any of your business?" Seb replied coldly.
Cynthia looked hurt, and Carol spoke up for her, "Cynthia was just being kind. You don't have to be so angry!"
Seb's eyes fell on Kathy, who immediately lowered her head, avoiding his gaze.
Seb stepped forward and asked, "Kathy, how did Henry get here?"
Kathy stammered, unable to answer.
"Speak up!" Seb shouted impatiently.
"Seb is asking you a question. Just tell the truth!" Carol urged, staring at Kathy.
Seeing Carol's eyes, Kathy quickly said, "Mrs. Anderson gave me a phone number and told me to notify Henry. I don't know how to use a phone, so I asked a nurse to help me call."
