Chapter 840 Relentless Pestering
Hearing Seb's blatant mockery, Susan couldn't help but feel annoyed, even though she usually kept her cool.
She shot a glance at Seb, then went back to wiping the ball. "I can support myself, and I'm proud of that. There's no shame in earning my own money."
Seb frowned. He'd meant to rattle her a bit, but he didn't expect her to be so tough.
"You're really something, aren't you?" Seb said sarcastically, still frowning.
Susan's hand froze mid-wipe. Memories of the past flashed through her mind, and she murmured, "You used to say that about me too."
Seb noticed the sadness in her eyes, but there was also a hint of a nostalgic smile, which left him momentarily stunned.
When he didn't say anything for a while, Susan looked up and met his gaze.
She felt a bit happy because, for once, there was no mockery in his eyes—just a hint of pity.
Realizing he'd lost his composure, Seb quickly looked away. "This tea is too bland. Make me a cup of coffee!"
Susan knew pushing him to remember the past wouldn't help, so she got up to make the coffee.
A few minutes later, she came back with two cups of coffee.
By then, Marc had already returned.
Susan placed the cups in front of Seb and Marc, smiling. "Mr. Anderson, I added one sugar like you prefer. Mr. Murray, I'm not sure how you take yours, so help yourself."
She placed a small jar of sugar in front of Marc.
Seb looked thoughtfully at his coffee. Not many people knew he liked just one sugar—Leon and Ellie were the only ones.
Marc glanced at Susan and then smiled. "Mr. Anderson, are you a regular here?"
"No," Seb denied, picking up his coffee to hide his unease.
Marc, being a shrewd businessman, sensed the subtle tension between them.
Seb extended his foot and said nonchalantly to Susan, "My shoes are dirty."
Susan looked at his leather shoes, understanding what he meant.
Seeing her hesitate, Seb smirked. "They say your club's service is top-notch, but I guess that's just talk!"
Susan hesitated for a moment, then grabbed a tissue and squatted in front of Seb, gently wiping his shoes.
Seb looked down at her with a complex expression.
Marc, sensing the awkwardness, said, "Mr. Anderson, my wife just called and wants me to go shopping with her. How about we continue next time? You know how women are; if you don't pamper them, they'll make a fuss every day!"
Seb smirked. "Mr. Murray, please go ahead."
"Alright, Mr. Anderson, let's stay in touch," Marc said, giving Susan a knowing look before he smiled and left.
About ten minutes later, Susan finally made Seb's shoes shine.
"Done," she said, looking at the shiny shoes with a sense of accomplishment.
Seb glanced down at his shoes and then at Susan, his eyes filled with mixed emotions.
Susan suddenly looked up and smiled. "I used to clean your shoes all the time, but you always said they weren't shiny enough. Look, this time they're perfect, right?"
Seb's face darkened. "I don't remember anything about you, nor do I think I need to."
Susan's eyes dimmed at his words.
She knew she'd face rejection countless times and was mentally prepared for it. So, she looked at Seb and said, "Maybe you'll think differently in the future."
Seb sneered coldly.
Susan tried to stand up, but after squatting for so long, she stumbled.
Seeing this, Seb reached out to support her.
But before he could touch her, Susan steadied herself by pressing on the coffee table.
Seb quickly retracted his hand, pretending nothing had happened.
Susan stood up straight, her legs and feet still numb and uncomfortable.
Seb frowned and suddenly stood up.
Seeing him about to leave, Susan quickly asked, "Where are you going?"
Seb didn't even look at her. "I came here to bowl, but now my partner's gone. Do you think I have any reason to stay?"
Susan had waited so long for this chance to get close to him and wasn't about to let him leave easily.
She stepped forward and grabbed Seb's arm, urgently saying, "Seb, just give me some time to talk about our past, okay? I believe if you give me time, you'll remember me!"
Seeing her sincere eyes and anxious expression, Seb was momentarily stunned.
Then he pushed her away decisively. "I don't think there's any need. I've already decided to marry Ellie next month. We have nothing to do with each other anymore. I hope you won't bother me again!"
"No! You can't marry Ellie." Hearing him admit he was going to marry Ellie, Susan shook her head violently.
Seb found it amusing. "Susan, you're just my ex-wife. I don't need your approval to marry someone, do I?"
With that, he turned and left.
Watching his back, Susan felt heartbroken at the thought of losing him completely.
She resolutely stepped forward and hugged Seb's waist.
"You said you would only love me in this lifetime. You can't go back on your word!" Susan knew she was being unreasonable, but she was desperate.
Faced with such a clingy Susan, Seb grew impatient. He tried to pry her hands off his waist, but her grip was too tight.
"Seb, I don't believe you can't remember me at all. I don't believe it!" Susan said, already sobbing uncontrollably.
