Chapter 222 The Gold Bracelet is Fake
Even though Susan was ready for Dorothy's antics, her eyes still welled up when she turned away.
"Hope you keep your word!" Dorothy yelled from behind.
Susan didn't look back, just kept walking with her head high, but tears still fell.
She rushed home to take care of Spring, skipping lunch because she had no appetite. Dorothy had made her feel sick.
It was past two when Catherine got back from the banquet.
"Susan, have you eaten? Dorothy sent a bunch of food," Catherine said, changing into slippers and holding a big bag of food.
Susan knew Dorothy was just putting on a show for Catherine. Dorothy could be that fake.
"Mom, I've already eaten," Susan said flatly.
"Okay, I'll put it in the fridge. We can heat it up for dinner. It's all untouched food from the hotel, and it's really good," Catherine said, smiling as she took the food to the kitchen.
Susan felt awful but couldn't confide in Catherine. If Dorothy wanted to play games, Susan would go along. She could put on an act as well, but she didn't want to be that insincere.
After putting the food away, Catherine asked, "Where's Spring?"
"Just fell asleep," Susan replied.
Catherine nodded and sat down, smiling. "I was worried Dorothy and Henry wouldn't get along. There's a big age gap, and Henry's a professor while Dorothy hasn't even graduated from college. His parents are respectable, and we don't match their status. But Henry's a good guy, and his parents are kind and treat Dorothy well."
Seeing Catherine so happy, Susan didn't want to upset her. "Dorothy is lucky," she agreed.
"Yeah, we can't fight fate. I've had a tough life, and now I just want you two to be happy. I'm at ease with Dorothy, but now it's just you. If you were on your own, finding a partner would be easier. But with Spring, especially since she's so young," Catherine said, looking worried.
Susan quickly interrupted, "Mom, when Spring's a bit older, I'll get a job. I can support Spring myself. I don't want to get married again; it's too much trouble."
"You can't live without getting married. You're still so young. Do you want to spend your whole life with Spring?" Catherine opposed.
"Mom, didn't you raise me and Dorothy by yourself?" Susan retorted.
Catherine frowned. "How can you compare yourself to me? I'm just a housewife with no education or experience. You're different. You have a higher education and a CPA certificate. You can't live a life of grievance like me!"
Seeing Catherine's earnest expectations, Susan felt sad and held her hand. "Mom, I was just saying. If I meet someone suitable, I'll consider it. Don't worry!"
"Susan, who is the father of the child? Every time I ask, you stay silent. This child..." Catherine started again.
Susan quickly cut in, "Mom, I don't want to talk about it now. Can you stop asking?"
Catherine had asked about the child's father countless times, and every time, Susan felt a headache coming on. She couldn't mention Seb's name because it would cause trouble if Catherine went looking for his family. But she couldn't just make up a father either, so she always dodged the question.
"Okay, I won't ask for now. But that doesn't mean I won't ask in the future. Tell me when you're ready," Catherine said, sounding resigned.
Just then, there was a knock on the door.
Susan stood up. "I'll get it."
"I'll go. Who could it be at this time?" Catherine muttered, heading to the door.
When she opened it, she saw Dorothy standing there, looking glamorous but upset. "The banquet's over, and you're not going home? Why are you here? Where's Amanda?" Catherine asked.
Dorothy looked dejected and angry. Without saying a word, she strode inside and spotted Susan by the sofa. She hurried over, her expression filled with fury.
"Why are you keeping silent?" Catherine muttered, closing the door.
"Are you really my sister? You made me lose face today!" Dorothy yelled, throwing a red box at Susan's face before collapsing onto a single sofa, crying.
Susan's eye hurt from the hit. She touched her eye with one hand and grabbed the box with the other. "Dorothy, what's wrong with you?" she asked angrily.
"How dare you ask? You know what you did!" Dorothy shouted, full of anger.
"What did I do? Explain yourself!" Susan was furious too.
They had cleared the air in the banquet hall corridor earlier. It had only been a few hours, and Dorothy was still relentless. What did she want? Did she think Susan was easy to bully?
Catherine, confused, quickly stepped in to mediate. "Can't you two talk things out? Why do you have to argue?"
"Mom, you saw her attitude towards me?" Susan sat down angrily.
With the tension escalating, Susan decided it was time to lay everything out for Catherine. The charade had worn her down, and she couldn't bear the exhaustion and pain of pretending any longer.
Catherine turned to Dorothy. "Dorothy, your are wrong. How can you talk to Susan like that? Apologize to her right now!"
Dorothy hugged Catherine's waist, crying bitterly. "Mom, I was so embarrassed at my in-laws' because of Susan. And you want me to apologize to her? I don't want to live anymore!"
Seeing Dorothy cry so hard, Catherine felt heartbroken. She patted Dorothy's back. "What happened? How did Susan offend you? Why did you lose face at your in-laws'?"
Susan felt Dorothy was acting but couldn't figure out what she had done wrong to make Dorothy come over and cry.
Then, Dorothy suddenly pointed at Susan and accused, "Mom, the gold bracelet she gave Amanda is fake!"
