Chapter 227 Spring's Father
The next afternoon, Tuva from across the hall had already set up a chair by her doorway and had been sitting there most of the day.
When Susan went out to take the trash, Tuva sneered, "Hey, Susan, didn't you say your kid's dad was picking you up today? I've been here all morning and haven't seen him. Is your kid fatherless?"
Tuva had been a widow since she was young and struggled to raise her only son. She was so mean that her daughter-in-law refused to live with her. Now, Tuva lived alone, with her son visiting occasionally. Her daughter-in-law and grandson never came because they couldn't stand her.
Her temper had gotten worse with age. She was known for being overly critical and saying harsh things. Susan, having been her neighbor for years, often faced her sarcastic remarks.
Susan ignored Tuva, but Catherine couldn't help but shout, "Watch your mouth!"
"Who's the one needing to watch it now? You guys bragged so much yesterday," Tuva shot back, curling her lip.
Everyone in the neighborhood knew what kind of person Tuva was, and Susan didn't want to engage with her. However, Tuva had a lot of influence. If Susan ignored her, the whole neighborhood would probably know she had a child out of wedlock and moved back to her mom's house, making it hard for Catherine to hold her head up.
Just then, a car pulled up, followed by two honks.
"Susan!" A loud male voice called from outside.
It was George. Susan's face lit up, and she walked out.
A brand-new Range Rover was parked in front of the old apartment building. A handsome man in a silver-gray suit stepped out.
George was dressed to the nines in a classy suit, sporting a gold watch and impeccably polished shoes. His whole look screamed sophistication, making both him and his car stand out in the neighborhood.
George's appearance immediately caught the neighbors' attention, especially Tuva, who was stunned.
Seeing the envious looks from the neighbors, Susan smiled and walked up to him, saying, "Hello, George."
George nodded and used a remote to open the trunk. "Grab the stuff."
The trunk was packed with gift boxes. Susan picked up a few, and George took most of them. They walked side by side into the hallway.
"Who is that?" Lovisa ran up to Tuva and asked.
"Never seen him before," Tuva said, feeling a bit embarrassed because she thought George might actually be the father of Susan's child.
"He looks so refined and handsome, especially in that suit. He doesn't look like an ordinary person. Look at those gifts in the trunk. And that car! My granddaughter's husband has one, but it's not as big. It costs seventy to eighty thousand dollars! Looks like Susan really found a rich guy. She's so lucky," Lovisa said enviously.
Tuva rolled her eyes and said, "He looks rich, but who knows if he's married? Why would someone like him be interested in Susan? I've been sitting here all day, and I'm tired. Time for some shut-eye."
With that, Tuva went back inside.
Lovisa quickly went to Maja's house to spill the tea.
Susan brought George inside. When Catherine saw George and the gift boxes, she was stunned.
"Hello, Catherine!" George stepped forward and bowed.
Catherine, confused, turned to Susan and asked, "Susan, who is he?"
Susan had told George everything over the phone yesterday. She just wanted him to visit Catherine, show the neighbors, and then take her and Spring away. But George took it too seriously, and now she didn't know how to continue the act.
"Mom, he is..." Susan stammered.
"Catherine, I'm Spring's father," George said with a smile, seeing Susan at a loss for words.
Susan could only think, 'You're Spring's godfather!'
"You're Spring's father?" Catherine asked again, taken aback.
"Yes." George nodded.
Catherine stepped forward and scolded, "How dare you come here? You've left Susan and Spring with me for months without a word. Are you even a man? Do you know how much they've suffered here? Do you deserve to be a father?"
"Catherine, I know I was wrong. It's not that I didn't want to come; Susan wouldn't let me. I really want to take responsibility," George explained earnestly.
Susan rubbed her head, feeling the situation was getting out of hand.
But she had to admit, George was good with words. In just a few minutes, he not only calmed Catherine down but also made her start to like him, or at least not hate him anymore.
Soon, Catherine invited George to sit on the sofa and asked Susan to get some coffee.
Catherine scrutinized George for a moment and then asked, "What do you do for a living?"
"I'm a lawyer. I run a small law firm," George replied.
Hearing this, Catherine was taken aback. She thought, 'Successful career.'
"Do you have any family?" Catherine asked again.
"My mother passed away a long time ago. My grandmother is still alive, and she likes Susan very much. My father has a new family, so we don't live together," George answered with a smile.
Catherine nodded, thinking, 'Not a complicated family.'
Then she asked, "Do you have a house?"
"I have a building in Maple Valley, a villa in the suburbs, and several commercial and office buildings. These are all my own properties. The assets I inherited from my mother are mainly in the downtown area and Aidamore," George replied.
Hearing this, Catherine was a bit unsettled. She thought, 'He's a millionaire!'
At that moment, Susan came in with the coffee.
When Susan's eyes met George's, he gave her a confident smile.
As soon as Susan placed a cup of water in front of George, Catherine said, "Have some coffee first."
Then, Catherine pulled Susan out to the balcony.
