Chapter 1326 Mother's Pain
Hearing this, Cecilia quickly wiped Rainey's tears and, with a tearful smile, said, "Mom, I'm back now. Please don't cry. Give me a smile instead."
"Cecilia! My girl!" Rainey said, breaking into a smile.
Just then, Seraphina brought over some fruit and snacks; Rainey and Cecilia started chatting.
"Cecilia, it's okay if your illness can't be cured, but why did you go abroad alone to get a PhD? You're a woman, and even if you can't give the Fields family a child, you should stay by your husband's side. How could you be gone for over a year? Aren't you worried Daryl might find someone else?" Rainey scolded her daughter.
Cecilia looked at her mother with a puzzled expression and cautiously asked, "Who told you I went abroad for a PhD?"
"Daryl did! Every time you called, you said you were seeing a specialist for infertility, but it turns out you were studying for a PhD. I've been urging you to have a child, and you must have been annoyed, but you should have told me the truth!" Rainey said, holding her daughter's hand.
Cecilia was even more confused.
"Daryl came here?" Cecilia asked.
Seraphina, who was nearby, laughed and said, "He's been here several times. Every time he brought gifts for Mom and us, and insisted on leaving money, saying we should take care of Mom since you weren't home. Your brother didn't want to accept it, but Daryl wouldn't take no for an answer!"
"Daryl also left his phone number, in case of emergencies. He even asked about my health and suggested I get a check-up in Maple Valley. But I noticed he seemed thinner and quieter than before. Cecilia, you have to cherish such a good man. Don't let the lack of a child make you act out. It's your health that's the issue, and we owe the Fields family. Daryl is a good man. Now that you're back, you should stay and take care of him," Rainey said patiently, holding Cecilia's hand.
Cecilia's heart was unsettled by her mother's words.
She had been thinking about how to explain her year-and-a-half absence, but Daryl had already come up with a reason for her.
She had left in a huff to study abroad for a PhD? It was a believable excuse, though she hadn't expected Daryl to visit her family multiple times, bringing gifts and money. Her heart warmed at the thought.
But then she wondered, 'If Daryl hated her so much, why would he be so kind to her family?'
Maybe he was just trying to find out where she was?
The thought made her gratitude towards Daryl diminish.
However, she was still grateful that Daryl hadn't told her family about their issues or blamed them. Her elderly mother wouldn't have been able to handle it, and no one could foresee what may occur.
Although Cecilia doubted their relationship could withstand the strain, she trusted Daryl's character. He wasn't the type to take out his anger on her family, and for that, she was relieved. At least he wasn't a jerk.
"Mom, I haven't finished my PhD yet. I'll stay for a few days, but I have to go back. I promise, once I get my degree, I'll come back right away," Cecilia said quickly.
She couldn't stay now. She couldn't let Daryl find out about Thaddeus. She would return after the divorce, when everything had settled down.
Rainey frowned and asked, "What's more important, your husband or your PhD?"
"Mom, I'll have my PhD in six months. I can't give up now. But don't worry, Daryl and I have talked. I'll stay with him for a few days, and later, when he's less busy, he'll come abroad to be with me for a while," Cecilia reassured her mother.
"That sounds good. Just make sure you two don't stay apart for too long," Rainey nodded.
Home was warm, but Cecilia had to leave early the next morning to go to court with Daryl for their divorce. She left home before the last flight to Maple Valley that evening.
On the plane, Cecilia couldn't forget her mother's hopeful eyes or her brother and sister-in-law's sincere concern.
No matter what, their care warmed Cecilia's heart, giving her the courage to face the future. She hoped to raise Thaddeus well and one day bring him to visit his grandmother, Azalea.
Cecilia frowned and touched her chest, feeling a painful tightness.
She hadn't nursed all day, and her breasts were painfully engorged.
She had a breast pump in her bag, but there was no place to use it on the plane, so she had to endure the pain.
At 9 P.M., Cecilia finally got off the plane.
She quickly found a hotel and booked a room.
Once inside, she locked the door, undressed, and used the breast pump.
After half an hour, the pump was still not full, and her chest still hurt. The pump wasn't helping much.
She hadn't drunk much water all day to avoid leaking milk, and now her lips were chapped. She couldn't drink much water now either, so she sipped small amounts.
She tried the pump again, but it still didn't help, so she threw it aside in frustration.
Just then, her phone rang.
Cecilia quickly picked it up and saw it was Freya calling. Thaddeus must be crying, so she answered immediately.
"Mrs. Fields, Thaddeus can't sleep without you and has been crying. Can you soothe him over the phone?" Freya's voice came through.
Cecilia's heart ached, and she quickly said, "Of course."
She could already hear Thaddeus crying.
"Thaddeus, sweetie, don't cry. Mommy's here!" Cecilia said, her heart breaking at the sound of her son's cries.
