Chapter 272 Disappointment

Susan heard the bathroom door slam open. From the footsteps, she knew George had arrived.

"What do you want?" George's voice dripped with anger.

Patrick smirked, "You know the deal, I just want some cash, Mr. Anderson."

"Didn't I just give you some?" George sounded both angry and restrained.

Patrick replied shamelessly, "We know you make big bucks, Mr. Anderson. Handling a big case can earn you hundreds of thousands. Don't be stingy, especially since we've risked our lives for you!"

"But you can't keep asking for money. I'm not a bottomless pit," George tried to keep calm.

Patrick started threatening, "We're in a dangerous business. If you don't give us a hundred thousand today, we'll ruin your reputation. Your reputation is worth more than that, right?"

"You guys are robbers!" George said through gritted teeth.

From inside the stall, Susan knew George would give in. As a lawyer, his reputation was everything, especially on their wedding day with so many important guests outside. He couldn't afford to lose face.

Susan decided to step out and stop this, but Patrick's next words shocked her.

"We may be robbers, but you hired us, Mr. Anderson. You're the top lawyer in Maple Valley. You know the law and help people with lawsuits. What we did for you involved attempted murder. You know the sentence for that, right?" Patrick glared at George.

Susan froze. 'Murder? I thought George just had Patrick and Christopher pretend to be robbers to scare me. How could it involve murder? Could George have instructed them to do something more sinister?' Her mind raced with worry, but she managed to compose herself, hoping to uncover the truth.

"Stop talking nonsense! I only asked you to stage a traffic accident, not to harm anyone. Just a minor collision!" George's tone was firm.

Susan was stunned. 'Staging a traffic accident? Who was George aiming to harm?' she wondered.

Terrified, Susan realized that George had concealed something significant from her. 'George, who are you really? An angel or a devil? How could you do this?'

"You told us to stage a traffic accident, but you didn't mention the other party was a big shot in Maple Valley. We totaled their car, and the guy's arm got broken. Now we're hiding because he's got eyes on us. He's the president of Prosperity Group. We can't mess with someone like that. You need to give us at least five hundred thousand dollars. We gotta vanish. If he finds out we did it on purpose, we're screwed!" Patrick's voice was shaky.

Susan trembled as she absorbed the shocking truth. Seb's delay for the paternity test wasn't mere happenstance; it was a result of George's calculated scheme. Both Seb and Hayden had suffered injuries in the orchestrated accident.

As the pieces fell into place, Susan's hands shook uncontrollably. Could George be capable of such ruthless manipulation?

The reality dawned on her with a chilling clarity. Who was the man she had married? Dizziness washed over Susan, and she clutched her head in an attempt to steady herself. The very thought of George's menacing actions filled her with a deep sense of dread.

Living with him, sharing a bed every night, how could she possibly find solace? The fear gnawed at her, casting a dark shadow over her ability to even rest or sleep peacefully.

Susan deeply regretted forgiving George so easily last time, believing he was just confused. She pondered how many things he had hidden from her and how many terrible deeds he had committed.

Outside, George was nervous. He grabbed Patrick's arm, "What did you say? Seb's been watching you? Does he know you've been coming to me?"

Patrick pushed George away, declaring, "You better give us the money now so we can hide. If he catches us or gets evidence, we're all in trouble!"

Patrick's words hit home. George said, "Five hundred thousand dollars, fine. I'll have my secretary transfer it right away. You and your brother, leave Maple Valley immediately!"

Patrick agreed, "Fine, but you better keep your word, or we'll risk everything!"

"Go pack your things. The money will be in your account within fifteen minutes," George said.

"Alright, we're leaving. Congrats on your wedding, Mr. Anderson!" Patrick walked out of the bathroom.

George swiftly retrieved his phone and dialed a number, issuing a quick instruction.

Susan slowly stood up, lowered her dress, took a deep breath, and opened the stall door, stepping out.

George was on the phone. "Transfer five hundred thousand dollars to the account I gave you a few days ago immediately."

Hearing the door open, George turned around and saw Susan standing there, staring at him with a distant, unfamiliar look.

George's words stopped. The person on the other end of the phone kept asking, "Mr. Anderson? Mr. Anderson?"

"Susan?" George, shocked, called out her name.
