Chapter 866 Azure Eyes
Susan sipped on her wine, feeling a little lightheaded after just half a glass.
Noticing her reaction, Hugo quickly chimed in, "This wine packs a punch. Maybe take it easy, but you gotta try it—it's the pride of Rainbow City."
"Got it," Susan replied, flashing Hugo a grateful smile.
She then dove into a spread of mouth-watering dishes.
Honestly, she hit the jackpot this time; the food was incredible, and she got to try a bunch of stuff she'd never had before.
Being a total foodie, Susan was in heaven. Meanwhile, Hugo was more focused on making sure she was having a good time, barely eating anything himself.
Mid-bite, Susan realized Hugo hadn't eaten much and frowned. "Why aren't you eating?"
"I am," Hugo said with a grin.
"I've only seen you nibble. Do you have a smaller appetite than me?" Susan asked, confused.
Hugo chuckled, "We've always eaten light to keep our figures in check. We worry about our image, so it's just a habit now."
Susan was at a loss for words.
She shook her head, "Being a noble sounds rough."
Hugo just shrugged, looking helpless.
"So, all this amazing food is just for me?" Susan joked.
Hugo's deep blue eyes locked onto hers. "You're the happiest eater I've ever seen!"
Susan paused her feast and teased, "Are you making fun of me?"
"No way!" Hugo quickly waved his hands. "Times have changed, but the girls I know are all about dieting. They stick to fruits and veggies, barely eat meat. I've never seen anyone enjoy food like you do."
Susan could only give Hugo a helpless smile.
"Don't get me wrong, I actually admire it. Enjoying your food is what matters, right?" Hugo said, placing a piece of meat on her plate.
"This meat is the real deal. Once you leave Rainbow City, you won't find anything like it," Hugo added, smiling.
Susan looked at the meat and shook her head, "Good food shouldn't go to waste."
And with that, she kept eating.
Hugo watched her with a warm smile, his blue eyes twinkling.
Sleeping in a castle was a first for Susan.
Maybe it was the wine, or the fact she'd been traveling for two days, but she fell asleep as soon as she hit the bed.
However, she might've overdone it with the meat, because she woke up at dawn with a bit of a stomachache.
Lying on the big bed, Susan couldn't stop tossing and turning.
'Seb and Ellie's wedding's over. They must be over the moon right now, probably on their honeymoon somewhere exotic. Heck, they might even make a baby on this trip,' she thought. The idea made her restless.
Even though she had decided to move on from Seb, it was easier said than done.
Luckily, Hugo had been a total gentleman, showing her around Zandoria these past few days. Without him, she had no idea how she would've coped.
As the sky started to lighten, Susan slipped into a robe and quietly left her room.
With her hair down and barefoot, she wandered through the castle, padding softly on the thick carpet, exploring room after room out of sheer boredom.
After a while, the morning light began to fill the castle.
Standing by a window, Susan was delighted to see a vast field of purple and yellow tulips.
The breeze carried the flowers' sweet scent, and Susan took a deep breath, savoring it.
Beyond the tulip field was a small hill, and the sun was slowly rising behind it. She was treated to a perfect sunrise.
But then, Susan realized she had no idea how to get back to her room.
She wandered around, feeling like she was stuck in a maze, unable to find her way out.
Panic set in. She'd left her phone behind, and even if she had it, there was no signal in Rainbow City.
In the end, Susan reluctantly pulled the copper bell in the hallway a few times.
She hated the idea of disturbing anyone, especially since it was just after dawn. But she had no other choice at the moment.
After a bit, she heard hurried footsteps and someone calling her name.
"Susan?"
It was Hugo. Relieved, she called back, "Hugo? I'm here."
Soon, Hugo appeared, also in a robe.
Seeing Susan in her thin robe, Hugo's first instinct was to take off his own robe and drape it over her shoulders.
"No," Susan started to refuse.
But Hugo wouldn't hear it and firmly placed the robe on her shoulders.
That was when Susan noticed Hugo was only wearing pajama pants, his upper body bare.
Though leaner than Seb, Hugo's muscles looked firm and strong.
Hugo's tone was a mix of concern and mild reproach, "Susan, didn't I tell you? This place is huge. You can't just wander around. If you get lost, it's really hard to find you!"
Seeing the worry in Hugo's blue eyes, Susan felt a pang of guilt.
"I'm sorry!" she stammered, taking a step back and gently shaking off Hugo's hand from her shoulder.
Hugo standing so close, shirtless, made her feel uncomfortable. She could feel her face heating up.
