Chapter 573 Happiness Is Just This Simple

Susan said with great disgust, "What are you doing?"

James stepped forward, crying bitterly. "Susan, I know you have a good heart. Please, I'm begging you, help me."

Although Susan had no fondness for James, and even felt disgusted by him, he was still her biological father. Seeing him kneeling and kowtowing in front of her, Susan's nose felt a bit sour.

Seb stepped forward and said, "Get up, James. Groveling won't get you anywhere."

Hearing this, James quickly nodded and stood up.

At this moment, James turned to look at Sophia, who was standing not far away with a vacant expression. He sighed and said, "You see, Sophia has gone mad. I can't bear to leave her in a mental hospital; it would be too painful for her. I want to take care of her myself, be there for her, always."

"That's your business. You don't need to discuss it with us, do you?" Susan glanced at Sophia.

In the past, she had always hoped Sophia would get her comeuppance. But now, seeing her in such a pitiful state, Susan felt a bit suffocated.

This time, seeing James's unwavering care for Sophia, Susan realized that James wasn't entirely heartless. At least he was sincere towards Sophia. However, both of them were selfish people, with Sophia being even more selfish than James.

"Yes, I have no right to discuss this with you. But I'm really in trouble now. The $1,000 you give me each month isn't enough for Sophia and me. And since I have to watch her every day to prevent her from wandering off, I can't go out to work. So, I was hoping you could..." At this point, James found it hard to continue.

Hearing this, Susan turned her face away.

Although she no longer harbored hatred seeing Sophia and James getting their comeuppance, she couldn't bring herself to help someone who had once destroyed her family, made Catherine cry every day, and constantly opposed her.

"You want us to give you more money, right?" Seeing Susan remain silent, Seb asked.

"Yes, yes." James quickly nodded and said, "Seb, I don't expect you to acknowledge me as your father-in-law, but I know you're a kind person. Can you do a good deed? Your descendants will be blessed with peace and happiness!"

"James, don't bring my children into this!" For some reason, Susan found this very unpleasant to hear.

"I was wrong, I was wrong." James lowered his head, looking extremely helpless and pitiful, with none of his former arrogance.

Seb frowned, glanced at Susan, and said, "Alright, I'll give you $3,000 a month from now on. That should cover your basic living expenses. I can't do more than that. You have to understand that no one is obligated to help you for free, especially after all the harm you've done to Susan."

Hearing this, James looked up joyfully. "I understand, I understand. Thank you!"

With that, James bowed deeply to Susan and Seb.

Seeing James bowing at a 90-degree angle, Susan felt extremely sad, her nose tingling.

Then, James turned and left with Sophia.

Watching James's haggard figure as he held Sophia, Susan suddenly felt very stifled, almost unable to breathe.

Seb then said to Susan, "I'm sorry for making the decision on my own just now."

Susan looked up into Seb's deep eyes and said, "Although they were once my mortal enemies, seeing them like this now, I don't know why, but I feel sad."

Hearing this, Seb smiled, put his arm around Susan's shoulder, and said, "It shows that you have a kind heart. You pity them."

"But do they deserve pity?" Susan frowned.

Seb said, "They are in their twilight years and have reached this point. They will probably just scrape by from now on. But at least they have each other."

"Yes, they have each other." Susan nodded.

At this moment, Seb took Susan's hand and said, "No matter what, James's feelings for Sophia are touching. I hope that you and I can support each other like this, through thick and thin, always together."

Hearing this, Susan smiled and said, "No matter how many years pass, even when I'm old and unattractive, I'll stick with you. You won't be able to leave me!"

Seb smirked and teased, "Looks like I have no choice but to stay with you when you're old and gray."

Saying this, he pinched Susan's nose.

"Oh, stop it, you," Susan laughed, swatting his arm playfully. "You'll probably trade me in for a younger model when the time comes."

Seb then ran to the driver's seat, and Susan followed, sitting in the passenger seat. The atmosphere became cheerful.

"What do you want for dinner?" he asked while driving.

"Barbecue, pizza, or Mexican food?" Susan said.

"We have plenty of time," Seb said, grinning at her. "We can try them all, one by one."

"Okay, let's start with barbecue then," Susan decided.

"Alright, I'll take you for Mexican food tomorrow at noon," Seb said, one hand on the steering wheel and the other holding Susan's hand.

"Really? You can't go back on your word. Even if you have important meetings or appointments, you have to take me for Mexican food." Susan was thrilled.

It seemed like it had been a long time since they had enjoyed such a happy time together. The recent gloom had been too overwhelming.

"Alright, I'll have my secretary cancel all my appointments for tomorrow noon, okay?" Seb affectionately pinched Susan's cheek.

"Okay." Susan smiled, feeling incredibly happy.

The car sped forward, and Susan looked at Seb with a smile. She thought, 'Happiness is really this simple—being with the one I love is enough.'

The light outside the car grew dimmer, but inside, it was warm. Susan's hand remained intertwined with Seb's, neither willing to let go first.
