Chapter 49 Surprise
Later, Ellie's words left Susan stunned. "But Mr. Anderson really cares about you. When the movers called him, he immediately called me to come to the hospital. He even took the earliest flight back to Maple Valley. Last night, he sat by your bedside almost all night without even taking a sip of water!"
"What?" Susan's jaw dropped, her eyes locked on Ellie.
Thinking back, she remembered Seb's eyes were bloodshot, and it was already morning. She must have slept for a whole day and night.
"You don't know how nervous Mr. Anderson was when you were being examined. It's the first time I've seen him so anxious," Ellie said, her eyes filled with envy.
"If he was so worried about me, why was he so harsh when I woke up?" Susan pouted, sounding more like a sulky teenager than her usual efficient self.
"That's because he cares about you so much that he couldn't help but get angry," Ellie laughed.
Hearing this, Susan snapped back to reality. Ellie was Seb's secretary, so of course, she would defend him. But Susan was in a good mood today. She pulled up the blanket and lay down with a smile.
Susan stayed in the hospital for three days before Seb had Ellie arrange for her discharge. It was the longest she had ever stayed in bed.
On the day of her discharge, Seb showed up in person. He walked out of the ward shoulder to shoulder with Susan, followed by Leon carrying her personal items.
Susan glanced at Seb and complained, "You're here to pick me up from the hospital. Can't you wear something a bit brighter? You always dress like a black crow."
Seb looked down at his black suit and said stiffly, "I haven't worn anything but black and white since middle school."
"Just because you haven't doesn't mean you can't try," Susan retorted.
"I'm used to it," Seb replied.
"Why are you so stubborn? How do you know the effect if you don't try?" Susan tried to persuade him.
Seb's face turned stern. "Don't try to change me. It won't do you any good."
With that, he walked to the car, opened the door, and got in.
Susan was a bit angry. She had just suggested he try wearing different colors, and he reacted like this? She had even bought him several pieces of clothing in colors other than black and white while he was away. It seemed like a waste of money, but it didn't matter since she used his card. She didn't lose anything!
Finally, Leon opened the car door for Susan. After she got in and saw Seb still with a cold face, she deliberately ignored him. No one spoke all the way home.
As soon as they entered the house, a neat and tidy middle-aged woman, Kathy Nelson, walked over and smiled. "Mr. Anderson, Mrs. Anderson, you're back. The meal is ready, with dishes both of you love."
Susan carefully examined Kathy, confirming she hadn't seen her before, and then looked suspiciously at Seb.
But Seb didn't give Susan an answer. While changing his shoes, he said, "Let's eat. I have plans this afternoon."
"Yes," Kathy nodded and went to set the table.
Susan thought, 'Judging by Kathy's attire and manner of speaking, she must be a housekeeper. Seb was quite considerate, knowing I needed bed rest for a few days, so he hired Kathy to do the housework.'
Instantly, Susan wasn't angry anymore. During her time with Seb, she had discovered that although he was moody, had a bad temper, and spoke harshly, he was quite warm-hearted and often considerate of others. He just didn't know how to express it. Why should she be mad at him? Seb wouldn't react, and in the end, she'd only make herself upset.
The table was set with food.
Potatoes were Susan's favorite. Since moving here, she had made them several times. Kathy had said there were dishes she loved. 'Did she mean this one? How did Kathy know I loved this dish?' Susan thought to herself.
At that moment, Susan looked up at Seb across the table. It must have been him who told Kathy. Despite his unlikeable demeanor, he was quite thoughtful, which made her smile involuntarily.
"Kathy, sit down and eat with us," Seb said, glancing at Kathy standing by the table.
"Mr. Anderson, there's no such rule," Kathy smiled.
Susan looked up at Kathy, who seemed quite familiar with Seb.
Seb frowned and said, "This isn't the central district."
Hearing this, Kathy nodded, served herself a bowl of rice, and sat in a corner to eat slowly. But she was very reserved, hardly taking any food. Seeing this, Seb took a plate and scooped a lot of food into her bowl, making Kathy look quite flustered.
Just as Susan was filled with curiosity about Kathy, Seb said, "Kathy has been my family's housekeeper. She took care of me when I was a child. I brought her here to take care of you since you're not well now."
Upon hearing this, Susan suddenly understood. No wonder Seb was so respectful to Kathy, and Kathy was so reserved. They had this kind of relationship.
"Then I'll be in your care, Kathy," Susan smiled.
Actually, she felt Seb was making a fuss. She was in good health and didn't need someone to take care of her, but since it was his decision, she accepted it.
This time, Seb ate slowly and didn't eat much. Susan couldn't help but frown.
The last few times he ate her food, he was very elegant but ate a lot. Why was he eating so little this time? Kathy had always taken care of him and should know his tastes.
At this moment, Kathy frowned and said, "Mr. Anderson, why are you eating so little? No wonder you can't gain weight."
"My appetite has always been like this. I'm done," Seb said, pushing his bowl away and getting up to leave.
Susan was puzzled, and Kathy said, "Mr. Anderson has always had a small appetite."
Susan couldn't help but frown. 'Seb had a small appetite, so why did he finish all the food she made the first time? Had he not eaten for two days before that?' she thought.
"Mrs. Anderson, you should eat more. You're eating for two now," Kathy smiled.
