Chapter 787 Sudden Realization
"Thanks." Seb didn't even glance up, his eyes glued to the computer screen.
Susan sensed something was off with him today. Thinking he had some crucial work, she leaned in and peeked at the screen. "What's got you so serious? What are you working on?"
But all she saw was an email from a regular friend, and she couldn't help but frown.
Seb finally looked up and said, "I need to reply to a few emails from friends. I can't focus with you here."
Susan stared at him, puzzled.
Seb dropped his gaze.
"Alright, I won't bother you then," Susan said, feeling a bit down.
She turned and walked towards the door, her steps heavy with disappointment.
Seb watched her leave, his eyes filled with helplessness and pain.
Just as she reached the door, Susan turned around.
Seb quickly looked away, avoiding her eyes.
"Don't forget to drink the cream of mushroom soup while it's hot. It won't taste good cold," she reminded him.
"Got it," Seb replied.
After giving him a long look, Susan left the study.
Sitting on the bed, Susan felt distracted.
Something was definitely off with Seb. The Seb who used to joke around, tease her, and pamper her seemed so distant now.
She thought for a long time but couldn't figure out what went wrong. Had she done something wrong?
Around midnight, Seb finally opened the bedroom door, the room dimly lit by a single wall lamp.
Susan was already asleep.
Seeing her back turned to him, Seb seemed to breathe a sigh of relief.
As he got into bed in his pajamas, Susan suddenly turned and threw herself into his arms!
Her sudden move made Seb freeze for a moment, then he frowned slightly.
Susan's hand caressed his chest, and she softly asked, "What have you been busy with these past two days? You're hardly home."
There was a hint of hurt in her voice. She couldn't stand his coldness, and it made her anxious.
"A few friends are here looking to invest, so I've been really busy," Seb replied hesitantly.
Susan smiled and said, "Your health is more important than making money. Don't overdo it."
"Got it. It's late, let's sleep," Seb said with a faint smile.
"Okay." Susan smiled and closed her eyes.
But half a minute later, she opened her eyes again, only to see Seb had already closed his.
She frowned; this was so unlike him.
In the past, as soon as the lights were out, he'd still try to get close to caress her, and it would always end in making love.
But this time, why was he so well-behaved? He didn't seem interested at all.
The next moment, Susan's hand slipped into his pajamas.
Feeling her hand on his chest, Seb frowned and then reached out to hold her hand.
"What's wrong with you?" Susan asked, frowning.
He got what she meant and smiled, saying, "I'm just a bit tired."
Susan felt a wave of disappointment wash over her.
It wasn't about the lack of intimacy; it was his attitude that stung. In the past, any move like this from her would have him overjoyed and ready to please her.
But today, he was cold and distant, even though his face still looked gentle. Something was definitely off.
Seb's eyes met hers in the moonlight, and she saw a mix of melancholy and sadness in them.
Susan furrowed her brows, wanting to say something.
But Seb gently took her hand out of his pajamas and said softly, "I'm really tired, let's just sleep."
He turned his back to her, leaving her staring at his back.
Facing his back, Susan pouted and pulled the blanket up, closing her eyes in disappointment.
She didn't sleep well that night. Her mind was a mess, filled with questions about Seb's sudden change, and she kept having chaotic dreams.
In one dream, she and Seb were holding each other tight, but then a gust of wind blew him away, farther and farther from her.
Susan woke up with a start!
She looked around and saw that Seb had left again, and the sun was already up. The clock on the wall showed it was only seven o'clock.
She broke out in a cold sweat. The thought of him leaving her terrified her. Even though it was just a dream, it felt so real, and her heart was still racing.
After getting dressed, she didn't feel like washing up. She figured he must have gone out to meet friends again, so she went downstairs to check on Hayden and Spring.
When she got downstairs and opened the door, she saw Mary coaxing Hayden and Spring to get up. Suddenly, she heard a man's voice coming from the kitchen.
Susan knew there were no other men in the house besides Seb, so she was thrilled to know he hadn't gone out. She walked to the kitchen door.
Just as she reached the door, she saw Seb talking to Kathy, who was cooking. She was about to go in when she heard Seb's words.
"Kathy, I had a dream about my mom a few nights ago."
Susan froze.
Carol was someone they deliberately avoided mentioning.
She saw the helplessness and pain on Seb's face.
Her heart ached for him.
Instinctively, she turned and leaned against the wall.
She didn't want to be seen, knowing Seb would say things she shouldn't hear, yet she couldn't resist the urge to know more.
Kathy immediately stopped cooking and frowned, asking, "Mr. Anderson, have you been feeling down and going out often because of this?"
Susan suddenly understood.
His coldness towards her these past few days was because he dreamed of Carol. No wonder he was avoiding her.
Her heart was in a knot.
Seb nodded lightly, then looked at the ceiling with sadness, and there were even tears in the corners of his eyes.
