Chapter 236 A Disturbed Heart

Susan looked down for a moment, then met George's eyes. "George, you're Spring's godfather, basically her dad right now. I can't get into another relationship, at least not yet. You're excellent, and you deserve someone better than a divorced woman with a kid like me."

Susan knew George was a great guy and appreciated his affection towards her. However, he wasn't the one who made her heart skip a beat. Besides, he seemed too flawless—good looks, personality, talents, and a solid family background. She couldn't dump Seb's responsibilities on him.

She regretted last night, thinking she might've given him false hope. She acted out of guilt and gratitude, not expecting it to cause this mess.

"But to me, you're the best woman," George insisted.

Susan frowned. Divorced, with a baby, no flashy career—how could she be the best? She pondered George's criteria for such praise.

Seeing her silence, George pressed on, "Susan, you don't have to answer now. Just think about my proposal."

"No need. I can't agree," Susan replied firmly.

George frowned, gripping the steering wheel. "Spring needs a normal family. What will you say when she asks about her dad? How will you fill out forms for preschool? Single-parent kids face many issues. If we decide now, she'll grow up in a happy family with me as her dad."

Susan fell silent. These thoughts had crossed her mind before, but she had always assumed she had ample time. After all, preschool was still two years down the road. Yet, as the saying goes, time waits for no one. She knew she would have to confront these matters sooner rather than later.

"Think about your own happiness too, Susan. I've liked you for a long time. My feelings are real, and I'm ready for the responsibilities. Just give me a chance," George pleaded.

His words hit her hard, especially those about Spring. But Susan didn't want to force herself into something she didn't want. George deserved better, and she felt inferior next to him.

Susan cut him off, "George, don't bring this up again. You're a great friend, but I have no romantic feelings for you. Spring's lucky to have you as her godfather, but that's it. I'm late, so I gotta go. Goodbye."

She got out of the car and hurried into the building. George watched her until she disappeared, then angrily hit the steering wheel, making the horn blare. He drove off quickly.

That day, Susan was still late. At her desk, she couldn't focus. George's words had shaken her.

She knew she only felt gratitude and admiration for George, not love. But his points about Spring's future problems hit home. Still, she couldn't accept his proposal just out of gratitude. She decided to focus on the present and work hard for a better future for Spring.

In the following days, Susan threw herself into her work and her online store, hoping to save enough to buy a real home for her and Spring.

George, meanwhile, was rarely around. Susan avoided him, hoping things would go back to normal after some time.

One evening, George couldn't resist visiting Spring and brought her a new doll. Spring was thrilled, her little hands touching George's face.

Seeing this, Susan felt grateful. George played the father role well, and Spring was happy. But as she grew older, things might change. Susan almost wished Spring wouldn't grow up.

After a while, Spring got sleepy. Serenity stepped in. "Mr. Anderson, Spring's sleepy. Should I take her to bed?"

"Alright," George said, kissing Spring's cheek before handing her over.

With Spring in bed, it was just Susan and George in the living room.

Susan smiled. "The doll you bought is too expensive. A cheaper one would be fine."

George laughed. "Don't worry, I'm a lawyer. I can afford it."

Susan smiled back and didn't argue. She picked up an envelope and walked over to George.
