Chapter 556 Predicament
Susan, however, forcefully shoved the envelope into Dorothy's hand. "Dorothy, I can't really help you much right now, so just take it and cherish the time you have with Amanda."
"Okay." Dorothy's eyes reddened, and she nodded before saying, "When I get back from Averlake, I want to go out and find a job. The past few years have been too wild; it's time for me to be independent."
Hearing this, Susan felt very relieved and smiled. "It's great that you can pull yourself together. Mom and I have been looking forward to this day."
Dorothy said with guilt, "Susan, I was immature before and made you and Mom worry."
Looking at Dorothy, Susan felt like she could finally breathe a sigh of relief after all these years. She never thought they could talk like this again; it felt like a dream.
"It's only right for Mom and me to worry about you. You don't need to dwell on it. The main thing is that you live well from now on and don't make us worry," Susan said with a smile.
"Okay." Dorothy nodded.
Then, Dorothy frowned and said, "Mom's been in a bad mood lately. Amanda and I are leaving in a few days, and she'll be home alone..."
Seeing Dorothy's concern, Susan said, "I'll come over here often. I'll go check on Mom now."
"Okay." Dorothy nodded.
Then, Susan turned and went into Catherine's room.
As she pushed the door open, Susan saw Catherine quickly wipe away her tears and then force a smile. "Susan, you're here?"
Susan knew Catherine must have been feeling down these past few days. Seeing her still crying in secret, Susan felt a pang of discomfort in her heart, but she continued to pretend as if nothing had happened.
"Mom, why are you sitting here alone? Why not go out and play with Amanda, or at least watch some TV?" Susan said with a smile.
"Oh, I'm knitting a sweater for Amanda. Come and see if it looks good." As she spoke, Catherine quickly took a nearly finished red sweater from the bed.
Susan took the sweater and smiled, saying, "It looks great. Your knitting skills are excellent, Mom."
After chatting for a bit, Susan noticed that Catherine was still listless and the atmosphere felt awkward, so she quickly said, "I'll go check on Amanda..."
Before Susan could finish her sentence, Catherine interrupted her, "Susan, don't go!"
Susan turned her head to see Catherine frowning, as if she wanted to say something but hesitated.
Susan immediately understood what she wanted to ask. After a moment of hesitation, she said, "Mom, do you want to know how Todd's doing?"
Hearing this, Catherine quickly waved her hand. "I definitely won't see him again, but... I can't help but worry. Is he alright?"
Seeing Catherine's pitiful look, Susan couldn't bear it. But there was nothing to hide now; after all, Todd was determined to get a divorce, and that was unlikely to change.
So, Susan said, "Todd's health is okay, but he moved out of my villa a few days ago and is now staying in a hotel."
Hearing this, Catherine panicked and said, "Why is he staying in a hotel? His leg hasn't healed yet. He won't be able to eat or sleep properly there. He's not a young man anymore; what if it affects his health?"
Seeing Catherine's anxious look, Susan quickly explained, "Mom, Todd has a caregiver with him, and Seb often sends Leon to check on him. He'll be fine, don't worry."
Hearing this, Catherine finally nodded, but her brows were still furrowed, clearly still worried about Todd.
After sitting for a while longer, Susan felt very awkward and had nothing more to say to Catherine, so she got up to leave.
In the following days, Susan's life was like a stagnant pool.
Seb never came home, and Catherine remained in low spirits.
Every day, Susan kept herself busy. She worked during the day, visited Catherine during lunch breaks, and went to Catherine's place after work. Then she would go home to take care of Hayden and Spring.
Every night, Susan would collapse into bed.
But even so, she would occasionally lie awake at night, his image filling her mind.
Susan had tried calling Seb a couple of times, but he never answered.
She knew he didn't want to take her calls, so she decided not to bother him.
One morning at the dining table, Mary was feeding Spring, Hayden was eating breakfast with his head down, and Susan was also eating absentmindedly.
Since it was just her, the kids, Mary, and Kathy, the house felt like it was missing a lot of laughter and joy.
"Mommy, why hasn't Daddy come home for so many days?" Hayden suddenly asked.
Hearing this, Susan looked up at Hayden, seeing his big round eyes filled with confusion as he stared at her.
"Daddy, Daddy." Hearing Hayden mention Daddy, Spring, who was sitting on Mary's lap, also started tapping the table with a small spoon and calling for Seb.
Seeing the longing expressions on her children's faces, Susan felt extremely sad, but she couldn't show it in front of them.
So, Susan smiled and said, "Hayden, your Daddy is very busy right now. He's on a business trip and will be back in a few days."
Hearing this, Hayden obediently nodded but then said, "Can I call Daddy? I miss him so much."
Seeing Hayden's longing eyes, Susan felt a pang of sorrow but still pretended to be cheerful. "Daddy is probably in a meeting right now. How about you call him on the weekend so you don't disturb his work?"
"Okay." Although a bit disappointed, Hayden still nodded.
Seeing Hayden being so well-behaved, Susan couldn't help but feel a bit resentful.
Even if he didn't want to see her and resented her, he shouldn't have stayed away for so many days without seeing the kids, right? The kids kept asking about him and missing him.
For a moment, Susan felt a bit teary-eyed but held it in.
She was already a mother of two and had to be stronger than before, not easily shedding tears.
After breakfast, Hayden went to get his backpack.
Kathy cautiously smiled and said, "Mrs. Anderson, did you and Mr. Anderson have a fight?"
Hearing this, Susan didn't say anything and lowered her eyes.
Seeing that Susan remained silent, Kathy couldn't help but say, "Mrs. Susan Anderson, I don't know why you two fought, but I'm sure it has something to do with Mrs. Carol Anderson. You and Mr. Anderson have a great relationship, and it's not worth hurting your feelings over issues with Mrs. Carol Anderson, don't you think?"
