Chapter 38

From that day on, Susan started feeling the full brunt of pregnancy symptoms, and they were brutal. She could barely keep anything down and would puke at the slightest whiff of strong smells. Within days, she was drained and had even lost some weight.

One morning, Carter handed Susan a document. "This is last month's financial report. Mr. Anderson needs it ASAP. Take it to him."

Susan frowned, not thrilled about seeing Seb. She really didn't want to face him right now.

Carter noticed her hesitation and frowned. "Look, this is an easy task. I've been trying to go easy on you—no overtime, less screen time. But you gotta understand, I can't manage everyone without some rules."

"No problem," Susan quickly replied. "I was just double-checking for any mistakes. Wouldn't want Mr. Anderson sending it back."

Work is work, she reminded herself. Personal feelings shouldn't get in the way. Plus, she could just hand the report to Seb's secretary, Ellie, and avoid him altogether.

Carter nodded. "I knew you weren't that fragile."

Once Carter was back in his office, Susan grabbed the report and headed out.

When she got to the CEO's office, she smiled at Ellie and placed the report on her desk. "Ms. Hernandez, here's last month's financial report. Mr. Anderson needs it right away."

Ellie stood up immediately. Even though Susan's status was a secret, she was still the boss's wife, and Ellie had to show respect.

"Mr. Anderson is inside. Won't you take it in yourself?" Ellie asked with a smile.

Susan shook her head. "I've got a lot to do. Please take it in for me."

"Okay," Ellie nodded.

Just then, the CEO's office door swung open, and out walked Amelia in a red low-cut blouse and a black mini-skirt.

Susan's face tightened, and she turned to leave, feeling uneasy about how close Amelia and Seb had been lately.

Amelia, eager to flaunt, blocked Susan's path.

Susan, clearly annoyed, snapped, "What do you want?"

Amelia crossed her arms. "We're sisters, right? Can't we chat for a bit?"

"I don't have the luxury of being your sister," Susan retorted.

Amelia smirked, half-turning away. "Fine, but don't expect any favors from me at Prosperity Group."

Susan looked puzzled. "You look out for me at Prosperity Group?"

Amelia arrogantly cleared her throat. "Seb and I are getting along great. He likes me a lot and treats me well. If things go smoothly, I'll be the boss's wife here. Upset me, and I'll have you fired in no time!"

Amelia's words made Susan laugh out loud.

Amelia was seriously delusional if she thought Seb would marry her just because they were flirting. It was laughable! Even if Seb wanted to marry Amelia, he'd have to divorce Susan first.

"What's so funny?" Amelia snapped, noticing Susan's reaction.

"I'm laughing at how naive you are. That's the funniest joke I've heard all year," Susan said, her laughter dying down.

Amelia's face turned red with anger. "Susan, you're just jealous of me, aren't you? Look at you, like an old woman. What man would want you? And you're pregnant, right? Where's the guy who knocked you up? Why isn't he marrying you? Bet he's either married or a total loser!"

"Jealous of you?" Susan scoffed, but then a wave of nausea hit her. She had no time for this and bolted towards the restroom, covering her mouth.

Seeing Susan flee, Amelia smirked even more. "Looks like I hit a nerve. She's too embarrassed to show her face!"

Seb, who had been watching through the slightly open door, turned and picked up the phone to call Ellie.

"Get security to escort Amelia out of here immediately," Seb said, clearly annoyed.

"Yes, sir," Ellie responded quickly.

"And didn't a reputable magazine want to interview me? Tell them I'm available this afternoon, and I want to be in the next issue," Seb added.

Ellie hesitated. "Mr. Anderson, didn't you say you wouldn't do entertainment-related interviews?"

"I've changed my mind. Do I need your approval?" Seb's tone was icy.

"I overstepped," Ellie said and quickly hung up.

After hanging up, Ellie noticed Amelia had already left and shook her head, thinking, 'Amelia got lucky. Otherwise, she would've been humiliated today.'

Just then, the phone rang again.

Seeing it was Seb, Ellie quickly answered.

"I don't want to see Amelia again. If she shows up, keep her out," Seb said and hung up.

Ellie didn't even have a chance to respond. She gently put down the phone and shook her head again, thinking Amelia had really ticked Seb off today. It also seemed that Susan, who was secretly married to Seb, held a significant place in his heart.

Susan vomited heavily in the restroom and felt a bit better. Looking at herself in the mirror, she indeed looked terrible. She didn't dare to use makeup to cover her bad complexion and couldn't help but feel sorry for herself.

No wonder Amelia labeled her an old woman. No wonder Seb's cold demeanor and involvement with Amelia stung Susan deeply.

But then Susan thought, 'Why should I let Amelia and Seb affect my mood? Amelia is my enemy, and Seb is just the father of my child. I can't let them control my emotions.'

Throwing the tissue into the trash can, Susan turned and walked out of the restroom with her head held high.
