Chapter 210 Her Fate
Looking into George's mysterious eyes, Susan couldn't help but ask, "What's the news?"
"It's about your enemy," George replied with a grin.
"Amelia?" Susan raised an eyebrow.
George nodded. "Ethan found out about her past and dumped her."
"Weren't they getting married because of the baby? What about the kid?" Susan frowned.
Susan knew the truth would come out eventually, but Amelia did have a child. The Robinson family would have something to say, right?
"What kid? The pregnancy was fake," George said.
"Fake?" Susan was shocked. "How could it be fake? We saw her at the hospital for a check-up. Did the doctor conspire with her to fool Ethan?"
Susan knew Amelia was sneaky, but getting a doctor to lie seemed too much. The doctor would be in trouble if the truth came out.
George hesitated, then laughed. "You wouldn't believe it. Amelia bought another pregnant woman's urine for the test. Of course, it showed she was pregnant, and Ethan was completely fooled!"
Susan found it hard to believe Amelia could come up with such a scheme. But then she realized it was probably Sophia's idea. They'd do anything to get Amelia into a wealthy family.
"How was Amelia's scheme discovered?" Susan asked, frowning.
George laughed. "Ethan was fooled, but his mom, Freya Parker, wasn't. As soon as Ethan brought Amelia home, Freya opposed it. She's been in business for a long time and had someone investigate Amelia. Turns out, Amelia had been with a bunch of men. Ethan didn't believe it at first, but Freya had evidence. She also exposed the fake pregnancy, and Ethan finally saw the truth. Otherwise, he would've married Amelia, and the Robinson family would've been a joke in Maple Valley."
Susan shook her head. In fact, Susan had foreseen Amelia's downfall; she just hadn't expected Amelia to stoop so low as to fake a pregnancy to marry into wealth.
Seeing Susan silent, George frowned. "I thought you'd be happy to hear this. She's your enemy. Aren't you thrilled to see her end up like this?"
Susan smiled. "She brought it on herself. Why should I be happy? Whether she's good or bad, it has nothing to do with me. We're just strangers passing by."
"Looks like your two months here haven't been wasted. You've really mellowed out," George said, giving Susan a thumbs up.
"I had no choice but to stay calm here," Susan laughed.
"I was going to tell you all about Amelia's miserable state, but I guess I was overthinking it," George said, leaning back in the rocking chair.
Susan knew he was teasing her, so she said, "If you really want to talk, I'm all ears."
George stopped the rocking chair with his foot, sat up, and grinned. "I knew you wanted to hear it!"
"Then spill it," Susan rolled her eyes.
George launched into the story. "Amelia tried everything to get Ethan back. She was so close to marrying into the Robinson family, she wouldn't give up easily. She pestered Ethan with all sorts of tricks—crying, kneeling, even cutting her wrists. It was a nightmare for him!"
"I can believe that," Susan nodded. Amelia was definitely capable of such things.
Amelia probably learned these tricks from Sophia. It's said Sophia used these methods on James back in the day. Otherwise, how could Catherine not be a match for Sophia?
"Eventually, Ethan couldn't take it anymore and went to Averlake to escape. Amelia couldn't follow him there, so she tried to get to Freya. But Freya's not someone she can easily manipulate. After a few tries, Amelia gave up. So, that's the end of that," George said, spreading his hands.
Susan laughed and said, "But Ethan can't stay in Averlake forever."
"He'll just have to take it one day at a time," George replied.
That night, George stayed at the small courtyard. His presence brought a lot of life to the place. In the evening, he prepared a barbecue. Saskia was thrilled and ate a lot, as did Susan. George was tireless, and Brenda was also very happy.
Autumn passed, and winter came. In no time, it was freezing, and the New Year was approaching.
The day before New Year's, Catherine had called several times, urging Susan to come home for the holiday. This year, Dorothy got married and wouldn't be coming home, so Catherine would be alone.
Susan looked down at her belly. In her condition, she couldn't go back. She felt guilty towards Catherine and kept making up excuses, saying someone had to stay at Lindell Harbor, and as the manager, she had to stay.
Lost in guilt and self-blame, Susan was startled when the courtyard door suddenly opened. George walked in with bags in his hands.
George was as radiant as ever, with a bright smile that always brought optimism. Susan thought to herself that without George, she wouldn't know how she would have gotten through these days. At least now, she was living peacefully in this small courtyard, quietly waiting for her child to be born.
Susan watched as George handed the bags to Brenda and then went out again. She frowned, wondering what he was up to.
