Chapter 1075 The Return
At seven o'clock in the evening, Cecilia, who was serving food in the kitchen, heard a series of footsteps.
She could recognize his footsteps. Realizing Daryl was back, Cecilia's hand holding the spatula froze.
Cecilia's heart tightened, and then she continued to serve the food on the plate.
Daryl walked to the dining room and saw the figure standing in the kitchen with her back to him. His eyes darkened.
Cecilia's hair fell to her waist, and she was wearing an apron. Then, she turned and placed the food on the dining table.
When she looked up, Cecilia saw Daryl standing in front of the dining table.
He was wearing a black suit, looking exhausted, and seemed to have lost some weight.
After making eye contact with him for half a second, Cecilia quickly lowered her eyelids and said, "Dinner is ready."
After speaking, she turned back to the kitchen to serve the soup.
Standing in front of the stove, Cecilia was very nervous, feeling a pair of eyes staring at her from behind.
After serving the soup, Cecilia took a deep breath and then walked out of the kitchen with it.
After placing it on the dining table, Cecilia found that Daryl, who had been standing in front of the dining table, was gone.
Cecilia frowned, thinking he maybe go to change clothes and wash his hands.
At this moment, a figure in a white shirt appeared in front of her.
Seeing that Daryl was back, Cecilia quickly turned to get the utensils, not wanting to make eye contact with him.
When Cecilia placed the utensils in front of Daryl, Daryl, who was sitting at the dining table, couldn't help but ask, "Where's Freya? Why are you cooking?"
Daryl noticed a bead of sweat on Cecilia's forehead and frowned.
"Freya had an emergency at home and took leave to go back," Cecilia replied.
Hearing this, Daryl said, "Douglas is really unreliable. I'll have Douglas hire another maid tomorrow."
"No need!" Cecilia immediately said.
Hearing this, Daryl looked up and met Cecilia's eyes.
Cecilia quickly said, "I can handle these chores. I promised Freya I would keep her job for her until she returns."
Freya had an emergency at home and was very upset. Because this job paid well and would be hard to find again, she begged Cecilia to help her out, promising to return as soon as possible. So, Cecilia agreed.
Hearing this, Daryl nodded, indicating his agreement.
Then, Cecilia turned and walked out of the dining room.
"Why aren't you eating?" At this moment, Daryl looked at Cecilia's back and asked.
Cecilia stopped in her tracks, then turned and said, "I'm on a diet."
After speaking, she walked to the living room and started cleaning.
Daryl sat in the dining room, looking at the four dishes and one soup on the table, feeling uninterested.
His eyes watched the busy figure in the living room, and suddenly, he lost his appetite.
Daryl took a few bites of the food, then got up and walked to the living room, standing behind Cecilia.
Cecilia, who was wiping the table, suddenly realized someone was behind her.
Seeing that he had finished eating so quickly, Cecilia glanced at the untouched food on the dining table.
"Is it not to your taste? Sorry, I'll improve next time," Cecilia said.
At this moment, Daryl frowned.
He felt that Cecilia was very cold towards him now, so cold that she had no temper at all, treating him like a maid. This made him very uncomfortable, but he didn't know how to address it.
Then, Cecilia started wiping the vase and tea set on the coffee table.
The vase still held fresh lilies. These days, the florist delivered fresh lilies every day, and every time Cecilia saw these flowers, she felt a mix of emotions.
Looking down at the working Cecilia, Daryl frowned, then took out a blue velvet box from his pocket and handed it to Cecilia.
Seeing the velvet box in his hand, Cecilia's hand wiping the vase froze.
"I saw this in a store in Cobblestone City and thought it would suit you, so I bought it for you," Daryl said, looking at Cecilia.
Hearing this, Cecilia hesitated, her eyes still devoid of any sparkle.
After a while, Cecilia said, "Thank you, just leave it here."
Hearing this, Daryl frowned.
She was completely different from before. In the past, she would have been overjoyed to receive a gift from him. Later, she might have firmly refused the gift.
But now, her tone was very indifferent without any expression on her face, and the thank you was very perfunctory, with a touch of unfamiliar coldness.
Daryl placed the velvet box on the coffee table, turned to leave, but then stopped and said, "Don't you want to take a look?"
Hearing this, Cecilia frowned slightly and said without looking up, "I'm working and don't want to dirty your gift."
Hearing this, Daryl bent down, picked up the velvet box from the coffee table, opened it, and held it in front of Cecilia.
Cecilia glanced at the item in the velvet box. It was a very exquisite brooch, shaped like two lilies. The lily petals were made of pearls, and the green leaves were inlaid with green gemstones. It was clearly very valuable.
"Do you like it?" Daryl asked, looking at Cecilia.
After hesitating for a moment, Cecilia looked at Daryl and said without any emotion, "It's beautiful, but it's not suitable for me. I don't have the occasion to wear such an expensive brooch. I think you should give it to someone else."
After speaking, Cecilia turned and continued wiping the tea set on the coffee table, her eyes calm.
Cecilia's coldness and detachment drove Daryl crazy. He couldn't even get angry.
Then, Daryl closed the velvet box with a gloomy face and placed it heavily on the coffee table, saying, "I have no one else to give it to."
After speaking, Daryl turned and went upstairs in frustration.
After Daryl left, Cecilia stopped wiping the tea set and then turned and sat wearily on the couch.
Her eyes swept over the velvet box on the coffee table, and her heart was filled with sadness.
Two hours later, after Cecilia finished all the housework, she dragged her tired body back to the guest bedroom.
Cecilia sat on the edge of the bed, feeling very uneasy, wondering if he would call her to make love tonight.
Thinking about his brutality that day, Cecilia was still terrified.
But what was meant to come would come. Realizing fear was useless, Cecilia walked into the bathroom to take a shower.
More than half an hour later, Cecilia came out wearing pajamas.
By this time, it was already eleven o'clock, and there seemed to be no movement next door.
Cecilia turned off the light and then went to bed.
