Chapter 12

A few nights later, Susan was chilling in a cozy restaurant, waiting for Henry.

Honestly, she didn't remember much about this professor. She was just here to go through the motions, so she tried to come up with a plan.

Right at seven, a guy in gray slacks, a white shirt, and gold-rimmed glasses sat down in front of her.

"Hey, I'm Henry. I'm thirty-one, a local, and I teach at Southern University," he said, straight to the point.

Susan looked him over and, with her chin up, said, "I have a few questions for you."

The guy seemed gentle and classy, definitely had that scholarly vibe. He didn't look like a typical professor. Susan didn't want to be rude, but she felt stuck.

"I'll answer any question you have," Henry smiled, showing off his white teeth.

"Do you have a three-bedroom, two-bathroom house?" Susan asked.

Maple Valley wasn't the city center, but it was even more developed and expensive. Owning a 1,600 square foot house there meant you either had money or were really successful.

Henry just smiled. "I live in a 2,100 square foot duplex."

Susan was shocked, thinking, 'He must've used family money for the down payment, and it's probably in the middle of nowhere.'

She quickly followed up, "Do you have an Audi A6?"

Henry's smile grew. "I drive a Land Rover. If you like Audis, I can get one."

Susan was at a loss for words. Henry, on the other hand, looked amused.

Susan took a deep breath and said, "I'm not a virgin!"

She stared at Henry, thinking, 'Let's see if you care about that.'

Henry looked out the window and then smiled. "I don't have a virgin complex."

Susan's temper flared. She slapped the table and said, "Are you crazy? You have a big house, a luxury car, you're handsome and charming, and you're a university professor. Why are you interested in someone like me?"

"What's wrong with you?" Henry asked, looking deeply at her.

"Since I was a kid, my dad ran off with his mistress. Now my mom and sister rely on me. My ex-boyfriend said I wasn't gentle or feminine enough and left for a rich girl abroad," Susan blurted out, then didn't know what else to say.

"Anything else?" Henry asked, still smiling.

"No," Susan mumbled, drinking her juice. She had laid out all her flaws, so why wasn't Henry backing off?

Susan wanted to tell Henry she was pregnant and only meeting him to report back to Catherine. But if Henry told the matchmaker, and the matchmaker told Abigail, and Abigail found out, Catherine would definitely know.

So Susan kept quiet.

"You're the most unique girl I've ever met. I also hate being set up, but I don't mind making friends. You wouldn't mind starting as friends, right?" Henry said, handing her a business card.

Susan took the card. She got a free meal and a pleasant conversation. More friends meant more opportunities, and she could tell Catherine she did her blind date duty.

When she got back, Catherine pulled her aside with a million questions.

Susan just blinked and said, "Mom, he didn't like me, so there's no hope."

"How could he not like you? Did you not talk to him properly?" Catherine got anxious.

Dorothy couldn't help but smile at Susan's words.

"Mom, he's got it all. I bet girls are lining up for him. I'm not an angel or a genius, so of course, he wouldn't be interested in me." Susan said, heading to her room to sleep.

That night, Susan overheard Catherine sighing and couldn't help but laugh under the covers. She had successfully passed the test.
