Chapter 288 What Is He Doing Here

Hearing this, Seb felt a gut punch. His brows knitted together, and he shot Susan a look that screamed pain.

Honestly, Susan got a weird kick out of being harsh, but seeing his sad puppy eyes made her squirm a bit inside.

She turned her face away, not wanting to look at Seb. "I hope we never talk about feelings again, and don't even start with the 'staying together for the kids' crap. From now on, apart from Spring and Hayden, I don't want any interaction with you!"

Seb was floored. He probably didn't expect Susan to drop such a cold bomb.

Turning her back to him, Susan said, "I'm tired. I want to rest."

Seb looked at her, all hurt, and said, "I'm leaving."

With that, he headed for the door.

Just as he reached out to open it, he turned back and said, "I'll have Leon bring Spring back tonight."

"Thanks," Susan said, trying to sound tough.

Seb didn't say anything. He just stared at her back for a second, then turned and walked out.

Hearing the door click shut, Susan quickly turned around. The door was closed, and Seb was gone.

The next moment, Susan covered her mouth and burst into tears.

Seeing Seb's sad face had hurt her too, but she wasn't about to forgive him. Whenever Seb got close, she started shaking, and she couldn't even explain why. He wasn't a monster, but she had this knee-jerk reaction.

Right now, Susan kinda regretted her harsh words, but then again, she didn't. Seb always had this fantasy that because they had Spring and Hayden, she'd come back to him. Today, she said those things to crush that fantasy and make him give up for good.

If Seb gave up completely, she could finally have some peace. From now on, she'd live for herself, for Spring, and for Hayden. She didn't want to talk about feelings anymore because feelings were a luxury she couldn't afford.

After wiping her tears, Susan started cleaning the house.

Isabella had to extend her business trip for a few more days, so the house had been empty for a week and was covered in dust. Spring would be back later, and the place couldn't be this dirty when the kid returned.

She had to hustle and clean the house, then whip up a decent dinner. After all, she hadn't seen Spring for a week, and Spring had just weaned and needed solid food now.

Susan wiped down the house, mopped the floor twice, changed and washed the bed sheets and covers, and cleaned all the dirty clothes. After all that, four hours had passed, and Susan was so tired she could barely stand.

After a quick rest, Susan went into the kitchen to cook. Just as the food was ready, the doorbell rang, and Mary brought Spring back.

After Mary left, Susan scooped Spring up, kissing her all over. Spring, who hadn't seen Susan for days, was extra clingy, touching Susan's face with her chubby little hands.

Susan missed Spring so much. She placed her on her lap and smiled, "Spring, did you miss me?"

"Yeah." Spring could only manage single words, but even that had Susan over the moon.

"I made something yummy for you. Wanna try?" Susan asked with a big smile.

Spring stuck her fingers in her mouth and stared at the food on the table, drooling like crazy.

"Looks like someone's super hungry. Let's get you fed." Susan scooped up a spoonful and gently put it into Spring's tiny mouth.

Watching Spring chow down with gusto, Susan finally felt a wave of relief.

After giving Spring a bath and getting her to sleep, Susan collapsed onto her pillow, totally wiped out. Her mind drifted back to Seb's pained eyes from earlier.

But exhaustion won, and soon Susan was out cold.

For someone still hustling to make ends meet, talking about feelings was just too much to ask.

Bright and early the next morning, Seb kept his word and sent a car to pick up Spring.

Once Spring was gone, Susan felt a bit of relief, but she didn't let herself chill. She quickly prepped her resume and headed out to job hunt.

After dropping off a few resumes, Susan grabbed some fruits and snacks and made a beeline for Catherine's house. She hadn't been back in months and missed her. Plus, she wanted to smooth things over, hoping Catherine wasn't still mad.

The doorbell rang twice, and someone came to open it.

As soon as the door cracked open, Susan, juggling her stuff, smiled and called out, "Mom."

But when she saw who it was, her smile vanished.

James, standing there, looked just as shocked. "Susan, you're back?" He then forced a smile.

Susan glared at him. "What are you doing here?"

James puffed up. "What do you mean? This is our house, isn't it?"

Susan scoffed. "Your house? You haven't been back in almost twenty years, and now it's your house?"

"No matter what, I'm still your father. Show some respect, or I'll teach you a lesson!" James snapped.

Susan shot back, "Almost twenty years playing dad to someone else. What, they finally kicked you out, so you came crawling back?"

She didn't know why James was suddenly at Catherine's place, but seeing him in house clothes and slippers, which meant he had lived here for a while, made her blood boil.

"What nonsense are you spouting? Keep it up, and I'll smack you!" James was fuming.

Susan had enough. She shoved past him and stormed in, yelling, "Where's my mom?"

Hearing the commotion, Catherine rushed out of the kitchen, still in her apron.

Seeing Susan, Catherine looked a bit flustered. "Susan, you're back?"

"Mom, why is he here?" Susan pointed at James, demanding answers.

Catherine couldn't meet her eyes. She looked down, fumbling for words.

Seeing her mom's hesitation, Susan's anger flared. "Mom, what were you thinking? How could you let him stay here?"

"How can you talk to mom like that?" Dorothy's voice cut in from behind.
