Chapter 139 Arrogant

Susan had just reached her doorstep when the landlord from across the hall handed her a package.

"Ms. Wilson, you got a delivery."

Susan smiled and took it. "Thanks."

"Don't mention it," the landlord said, waving a hand before heading back inside.

Susan unlocked her door and glanced at the package. It felt light, probably just documents.

She noticed the sender's address and frowned. It was from George and Vivian Law Firm.

Curious, she opened it and found a termination contract, signed and stamped. It was her copy.

Seeing the contract, Susan thought about her time at the firm. She felt regret; she had worked hard and achieved success there. But an unexpected incident had ended her career.

The next morning, Susan showed up at George and Vivian Law Firm.

In the finance department, she saw Fiona berating Maria.

"Is this the report you made? Is this even possible? If you don't want to work, then leave. I'll get Mr. Anderson to replace you!" Fiona threw the report on Maria's desk.

Maria looked distressed and didn't dare to speak, just staring at the document.

Susan frowned. She had thought Fiona might take over her position and mistreat Maria, especially since Maria had been close to her. But she hadn't expected Fiona to be so harsh, publicly scolding Maria. It was despicable.

Fiona turned and noticed Susan at the door. She was startled, then crossed her arms and sneered, "Isn't this Miss Wilson? I thought your salary and compensation were settled. What brings you here today?"

"Miss Wilson," Maria looked up, surprised to see Susan.

"Get back to work. Do you really not want to work anymore?" Fiona yelled at Maria for addressing Susan.

Susan knew Fiona had always been at odds with her. Seeing Susan now, Fiona took out her anger on Maria. Although Susan was angry, she didn't want to escalate things and make it harder for Maria.

"Even though you've been promoted, your manners haven't improved. Your subordinates are your assistants. Yelling at them is unprofessional and damages your image as finance supervisor, right?" Susan hoped Fiona would realize her mistake.

But Fiona got even more aggressive. "Susan, Maria is my subordinate now. You've left the firm, yet you still want to meddle. What, do you want Vivian to come and beat you up again before you're satisfied?" Fiona sneered, bringing up an embarrassing incident.

Susan didn't care and didn't want to argue with Fiona. She walked towards her former office and said, "I don't have time to argue. I'm here to collect my things!"

Fiona stepped forward and blocked the doorway.

"What’s this about?" Susan asked, eyeing Fiona, who was holding the door frame to stop her from entering.

"This is my office now, and everything inside is mine. If something goes missing after you go in, who am I supposed to blame?" Fiona smirked.

Susan narrowed her eyes, glaring at Fiona. They had never gotten along, but this open hostility was new.

"I had Maria move your stuff to the storage room. You can get it yourself. I'm busy and don't have time for you," Fiona said coldly before turning and shutting the door behind her.

Susan frowned deeply. Just then, Maria hurried over and whispered, "Miss Wilson, let me take you to your things. I packed everything and put them in that room over there."

Maria didn’t mention the storage room, but Susan knew it was a dirty, cluttered place for cleaning supplies, showing Fiona's disdain.

"Just call me Susan," she said, not wanting to burden Maria further.

Swallowing her anger, Susan followed Maria to the storage room. Despite the mess, her belongings were neatly packed in a box. It was clear Maria had been careful; nothing was damaged, and everything was tidy. Susan felt grateful.

Susan picked up the box, and Maria asked reluctantly, "Susan, are you really not working here anymore?"

Seeing Maria's sad eyes, Susan smiled. "The contract's terminated. If I hadn’t been busy with exams, I would’ve come sooner."

"I miss working with you," Maria said, looking helpless.

Susan felt a pang of sadness. Maria was honest and sincere, no match for Fiona. Fiona had deep roots at the firm and was related to Vivian. Now that Fiona was the finance supervisor, Maria's life would be tough if she offended her.

"Maria, you're capable and reliable. You’d do well anywhere else," Susan tried to encourage her.

Maria understood the underlying message.

"Susan, I want to leave, but my family situation is tough. Finding a new job with the same pay will take time. I rent a place here and send money home every month. I can’t afford to change jobs now. I just have to take it one day at a time and endure Fiona’s scolding. She says she wants to fire me, but there’s no one to replace me right now. A newbie would take time to train. Besides, Mr. Anderson values me and doesn’t like Fiona. He won’t just listen to her," Maria shared.
