Chapter 1000: I Just Don't Want You to Leave Me

In the hospital room, Evelyn sat quietly by the bedside.

Joshua hadn't said a word since waking up. Even when he saw Evelyn, he stayed silent.

Seeing him like this, Evelyn got worried. "Joshua."

"Don't worry; I'm fine," Joshua said with a smile, trying to comfort her.

But how could he be fine?

Joshua would be in a wheelchair for life. Who could accept that easily?

"We're reaching out to top doctors for you. There's gotta be a solution," she assured him, worried he was bottling up his emotions.

Sometimes, it's better to let it out.

When Joshua heard "we," he knew she meant her and Dermot, which made him feel uneasy.

"Evelyn, if I have to spend my life in a wheelchair, will you stay by my side?" Joshua suddenly asked, looking at her.

Evelyn was stunned, and Dermot, who was at the door, was shocked too.

Dermot wanted to burst in and make Evelyn refuse, but he knew it wouldn't help.

If Evelyn wanted to agree, he couldn't stop her.

Evelyn pressed her lips together and met Joshua's gaze. "Joshua, do you mean..."

"I just don't want you to leave me," Joshua said with a bitter smile. "I've become a cripple. If you leave, I don't know how I'll go on."

Evelyn didn't speak; she understood what Joshua meant.

She wanted to refuse, but seeing the sadness in Joshua's eyes, she knew she couldn't.

Joshua had saved her, ending up like this. If not for him, she might be the one in a wheelchair.

She couldn't be that selfish.

Joshua looked at her. "Hey, I was just joking. You don't have to take it seriously..."

"Joshua, as long as you're in a wheelchair, I'll take care of you. Don't worry, I won't leave," Evelyn suddenly said, cutting him off.

Joshua was surprised; he hadn't expected her to agree so quickly.

Outside the door, Dermot felt his strength drain away.

He knew what Evelyn's words implied, but he couldn't accept it.

They were so close to being together, but now, they couldn't because of Joshua.

When Evelyn came out of the room, she saw Dermot sitting on a bench, looking distressed.

He must have heard the conversation.

"Dermot," Evelyn called. "I'm hungry. Let's go have breakfast."

Because Joshua woke up suddenly, she hadn't finished her breakfast before rushing over. Now that things were settled, she felt hungry.

Dermot looked up, opened his mouth, but just nodded. "Okay."

In Evelyn's hospital room, they ate breakfast in silence.

The breakfast was sumptuous, but Evelyn couldn't taste a thing.

She put down her fork and looked at Dermot. "You heard what I said to Joshua, didn't you?"

"No," Dermot shook his head. As long as he denied it, he knew nothing.

"Dermot, don't lie to yourself," Evelyn said firmly. Dermot had heard it; otherwise, he wouldn't have reacted this way.

Dermot threw his utensils on the table, his eyes red. "Yes! I heard it! So what? What do you want to tell me?"
