Chapter 928: Have You Thought About the Consequences

At noon, Evelyn called Ruby again, but this time a guy named Matthew answered.

"Is this your phone? If you want it back, send me a hundred bucks, or I'll toss it in the river," he said.

Evelyn was shocked but quickly composed herself. "Did you find the phone?"

"Yeah, I found it on the street. I didn't steal it," Matthew replied, sounding defensive.

Evelyn felt something was off. How did Ruby's phone end up on the street?

"Do you want it or not? If not, I'll throw it away," Matthew pressed.

Evelyn snapped back. "Yes, I want it. Give me an address, and I'll come to you."

"No way. You transfer the money, and I'll have it delivered," Matthew insisted.

Evelyn sneered, "What's the difference? If I wanted to call the cops, I could still track you through the transaction."

"You..."

Evelyn continued, "If you're too scared to do wrong, don't try it. Leave the phone where you found it, and I'll get it myself."

Matthew was nervous. It was his first time finding a phone, and he knew asking for money was wrong. But he thought a hundred bucks wasn't much, and the other party wouldn't call the cops over it, right?

Evelyn's attitude made him more worried. "If you put it that way, I'll just throw the phone away."

"Have you thought about the consequences of destroying someone else's property?" Evelyn asked.

"So, you're blaming me for finding a phone?" Matthew shot back, feeling unfairly accused.

Evelyn chuckled, "If you want to do the right thing, return the phone to its owner or take it to the police. If that's too much, just leave it where you found it, and the owner will get it."

A hundred bucks wasn't much to Evelyn, but she couldn't condone this behavior. If Matthew hadn't picked up the phone, Ruby could have retraced her steps and found it herself.

If Matthew had returned the phone, Evelyn would have thanked him on Ruby's behalf.

But Matthew demanding money as if it were his right? No way.

Matthew couldn't argue with her logic and felt guilty. "Fine, come find it yourself."

He hung up. He didn't throw the phone away but placed it in some random bushes, thinking now he couldn't be accused.

Evelyn wasn't worried. She went to her computer to track Ruby's phone.

She wasn't a tech wizard but had put a tracking app on Ruby's phone for safety. Ruby knew about it, so finding the phone was easy.

On her way to retrieve the phone, Evelyn called Ruby's dad to ask about Ruby's whereabouts. He said Ruby should be at the company.

Evelyn hung up, planning to go to the company after getting the phone.

She soon found the phone in the bushes. As she was about to find Ruby, the phone rang.

The caller ID was just an "M," making Evelyn curious. She answered.

Given her relationship with Ruby, this wasn't a big deal. She knew all of Ruby's passwords.
