Chapter 1116: Not Interested
Evelyn was floored when she heard that.
She'd been waiting for Joshua to have dinner just to convince him to take her to Danista. She hadn't even opened her mouth yet, and he was already on it.
Seeing her quiet, Joshua thought she was still mad and kept going, "Evelyn, I know you wanna go back home, but I really hope you can stick around here. Why not give it a shot? If after a while you still can't vibe with it, we can talk about heading back."
Evelyn snapped out of it and nodded. "Alright then."
Joshua let out a big sigh of relief.
Thank goodness Evelyn didn't push to go back. If she had, he would've been totally lost.
Joshua didn't wanna mess things up between them. So he played it cool and humble; with Evelyn, that usually did the trick.
"Let's eat," Evelyn said, her tone softer than usual, probably 'cause she was in a good mood.
Joshua had no clue about Evelyn's plan; he was even hoping she'd get used to it here and eventually wanna stay.
Too bad, that day was never gonna come.
"You seem pretty busy lately. What's been keeping you?" Evelyn asked casually.
Joshua thought for a sec and decided to be straight with her. "While I was away, some traitors were stirring up trouble. I've been dealing with that."
Evelyn just said, "Oh," not really caring about the details.
"Evelyn, I haven't taken any mercenary gigs for a while. Now, I'm leading my crew to start our own company. It's different from before," Joshua said, worried she might still think badly of him. He knew she wasn't into shady stuff.
Evelyn was caught off guard by his words. Why was he telling her this? She didn't care.
She looked up and met Joshua's eyes, instantly getting what he meant. "Is that so? That's great."
"Yeah, I'll get everything on the right track." By then, things would be better.
Evelyn smiled, though she really wanted to ask Joshua what he meant by "the right track."
Not doing mercenary work, but switching to drug trafficking?
Even though Evelyn hadn't dug deep, she could guess some things from what folks on the island said.
She kept quiet. She knew Joshua wasn't a nice guy. Even though he hadn't hurt her yet, it was 'cause she wasn't a threat to him.
Even now, he wouldn't let her leave. If Evelyn knew too much, leaving would be even more impossible.
After dinner, Joshua took Evelyn for a walk on the beach.
Sometimes Evelyn thought that if she hadn't been forced to come here, she might actually like it.
Having lived the hectic life in Golombia, she really got how precious these chill days were.
But sadly, the timing was all wrong.
Standing by the sea, Evelyn couldn't help but say, "The sunset is beautiful."
"Do you like it? You can see it every day," Joshua replied.
Evelyn gave a dry laugh. No matter how beautiful a view was, seeing it every day could get old.
She looked into the distance and changed the subject. "Why don't you like Mary? She's pretty and super loyal to you."
Evelyn thought that if Joshua liked Mary, they could be happy together.
"I'm not into her," Joshua answered.
That was blunt. Evelyn asked helplessly, "Then why do you like me?"
