Chapter 526 I Thought You Were Warning Me
Charles couldn't conceal a trace of displeasure at Evelyn's dismissals, despite his composed exterior.
"In Columbia, it's not always wise to keep to yourself," he remarked, his tone now tinged with indifference.
That comment caught Evelyn's attention, and she finally turned to face him.
"So, the innocent facade doesn't hold up. No need for the wolf to hide in sheep's clothing," she thought.
"Well, if I choose to maintain my privacy, Mr. Roberts, what exactly can you do about it?" she inquired, genuinely curious about his next move.
Charles's expression stiffened. Not only because they were at a social function but also because he couldn't afford to mess with someone bearing the title of the Kyte family's Lady—not openly, anyway.
He cleared his throat awkwardly, trying to alleviate the awkwardness. "Cousin, you're taking my words too seriously. It was just friendly advice, nothing more."
"Oh? I thought you were warning me just now," Evelyn replied with a light laugh, her voice tinged with disdain.
People clearly held her in contempt and schemed against her, but no one dared to voice it openly due to her status as the Lady of the Kyte family. It was all quite tiresome.
An uncomfortable silence settled between them. Charles was at a loss for words. It seemed that nothing could faze Evelyn; she was immune to any form of persuasion.
Charles's gaze shifted to Lucia and Leap, who were engaged in conversation not far away. Leap whispered something into Lucia's ear, and she smiled, while Leap made his way toward the stage. Charles knew the event was about to commence.
His attention then returned to Evelyn, who continued eating nonchalantly, seemingly oblivious to Lucia's surroundings.
"It looks like you don't wish to acknowledge me as your cousin. If that’s the case, I won’t intrude. I just hope you won't regret your decision today," he mused. His intention had been to gauge Evelyn's attitude. Had she been receptive, Charles might have considered supporting her.
But now, it was clear. She simply didn't seem to mind his presence at all, and not in a good way.
If someone like her took over the Kyte family business, Charles feared it would spell trouble for the Roberts family.
Charles left, leaving Evelyn perplexed. Why did people assume that she was obliged to respond to their advances?
As she pondered, she felt a gaze on her. Looking up, she was surprised to see Dermot.
He had actually shown up at the party.
She couldn't quite place her feelings, but truthfully, she was somewhat glad, although the reason eluded even herself.
They acknowledged each other with a nod across the crowd, a brief greeting.
Dermot didn’t approach. He understood that talking to Evelyn right now would draw everyone’s attention. He didn’t want to make her the center of gossip, so he restrained himself.
It was fine. He needed more time. When he was strong enough, he would stand by her and declare to everyone, “She is mine.”
Evelyn was unaware of the depth of Dermot’s thoughts. She was soon occupied with other guests coming over to greet her, likely motivated by her prominent status, and she handled them with obligatory politeness.
Meanwhile, Dermot found himself accompanied by another person.
"Evelyn’s quite the magnet tonight, isn’t she?" Greg commented. He looked at Evelyn with a hint of regret in his eyes.
On a night like this, even he would likely do no more than exchange a polite nod with Evelyn.
