Chapter 746: Can't Believe It?
Aidan hung up the phone, but Dermot didn't give up. He tried calling again, but couldn't get through.
Left with no choice, he had someone investigate Evelyn's location to figure out what was going on.
In the outskirts of Golombia, deep in the mountains by the river, Evelyn was awakened by cold water.
Evelyn was soaked, with half of her body still in the water.
She was lucky. Even after jumping from such a height, she didn't die. Although she was unconscious at the time, the current carried her to the shore, preventing her from drowning in the river.
Evelyn tried her best to crawl to the shore and managed to get her lower body out of the water. Her leg, which had been shot, was still bleeding. If this continued, she would pass out and die from blood loss before the mercenaries found her.
She looked at a large rock not far away and struggled to climb onto it. She then tore a strip of cloth from her clothes and made a simple bandage.
But all these couldn't solve the most pressing problem.
She thought, 'How am I going to get out of here?'
Besides, she was worried that the mercenaries hadn't given up. If they were searching for her, she was still in great danger.
Thinking of this made Evelyn anxious.
Evelyn couldn't remember the last time she had been in such a dire situation.
The last time was when she was studying abroad. Back then, she was also being chased by mercenaries, but that time it was because someone was after her lab's data. The target was her mentor, and she was just collateral damage.
This time, however, she was the direct target, and the danger was far greater.
The sound of someone approaching interrupted Evelyn's thoughts. She looked towards the noise and saw a light—it was a flashlight.
Cold sweat broke out on Evelyn's back instantly. She thought, 'They find me so quickly?'
Without time to think, she slid off the rock and hid in the nearby bushes.
Joshua walked to the large rock, frowning slightly. "No one? Did I see it wrong?"
Joshua had clearly seen a figure on this rock from halfway up the mountain, which was why he came down to check. But now, there was no one.
As Joshua was about to leave, he noticed something unusual.
Evelyn had just been here, and blood from her wounded leg had dripped onto the rock. Despite the darkness, Joshua saw it.
In the bushes, Evelyn saw Joshua looking at the rock and immediately understood that he had seen the blood.
She couldn't hide anymore.
Scanning her surroundings and seeing no one else, Evelyn gritted her teeth, grabbed a rock, and prepared to hit Joshua.
She silently approached Joshua from behind. As she was ready to strike, Joshua spoke first, "Evelyn, after all these years, is this how you plan to welcome me?"
With that, Joshua turned his head and looked at Evelyn, who was holding the rock above her head.
In the moonlight, Evelyn finally saw Joshua's face clearly and was in disbelief.
She rubbed her eyes, but Joshua didn't disappear. He was still smiling at her. "What? Can't believe it?"
Evelyn lowered the rock and tentatively called out, "Joshua?"
"Yes." Joshua stood up and walked to Evelyn's side.
Before Evelyn could speak again, Joshua picked her up by the waist. "You're so badly injured, and you're still holding on. Doesn't it hurt?"
