Chapter 1289: It All Depends on Whether You Can Be Ruthless

"Hey, you good?" Evelyn glanced at Lily's pale face, feeling a bit worried.

Honestly, there wasn't anything majorly wrong with Lily; it was just that she and Aidan thought she wasn't right for Niall.

But looking at the current mess, splitting them up seemed like a lost cause. She'd already given up on that idea.

So, if that's how it was, might as well accept that Lily could end up being her sister-in-law.

"I'm fine," Lily nodded, forcing a smile.

Evelyn didn't push it. I mean, who could really be okay in a situation like this? "Where you headed? I'll give you a lift."

Lily wanted to say no, but Evelyn didn't give her the chance. "Get in the car."

Evelyn had already opened the door, leaving Lily no choice but to thank her and hop in.

In the car, Dermot was driving up front, Evelyn was in the passenger seat, and Lily was in the back. No one said a word.

Finally, Evelyn broke the silence. "Don't let Aidan's words get to you. If you and Niall really love each other, no one can stop you."

"I get it, and Aidan's not totally wrong," Lily said with a bitter smile. Even though she hated to admit it, she often felt she wasn't good enough for Niall.

Forget her family's status; she herself didn't measure up to him. Plus, she couldn't ignore her family background.

She'd heard Niall mention before that Evelyn, Aidan, and he were orphans and had never seen their parents. Evelyn was only found by her parents later on.

At that time, Lily thought how great it would be if she were an orphan too.

Sure, childhood would be rough, but at least things would get better when she grew up.

And Lily was tormented by her own family both as a kid and as an adult.

Her family always asked her for money. If she really married Niall, she feared her parents might start asking him for money too. Would she end up being a burden to him?

She once naively thought Niall would be the one to rescue her from hell, but what if she dragged Niall into hell instead?

The mere thought of this possibility terrified her.

"This isn't your fault," Evelyn said, worried Lily might overthink. "Those who hurt Niall will pay. As for your parents..."

"Have you thought about how to deal with them?" Evelyn asked.

If Lily really wanted to be with Niall, she had to sort out her parental issues. Her parents were like ticking time bombs; if she didn't defuse the situation, it could blow up anytime.

Lily shook her head and smiled bitterly. "I don't know how to fix it. I even wish I never had such parents."

"There’s always a way; it just depends on whether you can be ruthless enough," Evelyn said.

Lily's eyes lit up, staring straight at Evelyn. "What way?"

"Don't rush. Go home and rest first. I need to think about it, and besides, I have to wait for Niall to wake up." Evelyn hadn't figured it out yet, but she believed that breaking away from one's family was doable.

Lily pressed her lips together and didn't ask further. She knew this was a tough nut to crack and didn't hold much hope.

After all, she had tried to cut ties with her parents before.

But it didn't work.

At first, they agreed, but after a few days, they went back on their word, causing a scene at her workplace, forcing her to compromise.
