Chapter 189 You're Not Almighty
"Evelyn looked at the sensible child and didn't know how to tell him the news of his parents' death. Compared to her hesitation, Ethan appeared to be understanding: 'I know, Mom and Dad went to heaven, they turned into stars and will always be watching over me and my little sister.'
Evelyn was surprised and asked, 'They turned into stars?'
'Yes, Aidan and I talked about it,' Ethan nodded. At the age of five, he didn't understand what death meant.
Dermot... Could he have such a tender side?
Just as she said that, someone walked in from outside. Evelyn looked up and met his gaze. 'Is the search and rescue over?'
'Yes, for now,' Dermot nodded. 'Without sophisticated detection equipment, we don't know if there are still survivors under the rubble. We can only wait for rescue.'
After a long and exhausting day, everyone's energy had reached its limit. They couldn't blindly dig everywhere. For now, all they could do was wait.
Evelyn felt heavy-hearted. Despite knowing the truth Dermot spoke of, the thought of people waiting for rescue under the ruins outside made her unable to feel any better.
Dermot gave Ethan a piece of candy and patted his head. 'Why don't you go out and check on your little sister?'
'Okay.'
Ethan left, leaving only Dermot and Evelyn in the tent.
'I understand that as a doctor, you want to save everyone,' Dermot comforted. 'But you have to understand that you're not almighty.'
Evelyn pursed her lips, forcing a smile. 'Don't worry, I understand this principle.'
'What about your injury...'
'It's no big deal.'
They fell silent, neither of them speaking a word.
After what seemed like a long time, Dermot spoke again. 'The reason I went out to dinner with Natalie that night was because I thought it would be polite to get to know her. I couldn't just refuse when she asked. But I never thought she would drug me.'
Evelyn didn't expect him to explain Natalie's situation. She felt an emotion.
Dermot continued, 'You may not know since you don't have internet access here, but Natalie has married Oliver. They just had their wedding.'
Married Oliver?
The surprise in Evelyn's eyes couldn't be hidden. She found it hard to believe. 'How could she marry Oliver?'
She may not be familiar with Oliver, but she knew of him. the Stanley family was quite well-known in Moris City, not much different from the Doyle family.
'Francis has been trying to seek help from the Stanley family, and it seems like Oliver likes Natalie. The two families agreed on the marriage, so it's not that surprising,' he explained.
However, Evelyn frowned. She thought of Natalie marrying into the Stanley family and hesitated to finish her sentence.
"Then I won't be able to do anything about him?" She believed that Keith and Aidan could take down the Barns family, but the Stanley family... that would be difficult. Besides, they can't keep swallowing up big families one after another, as it would only draw too much attention and make them enemies of the public.
"I know you don't like Natalie, but now that she's married into the Stanley family, it won't be easy to get to her," Dermot reminded her, but added, "If you want to go after her, I can help you."
"You?" Evelyn looked at him, smiling but not smiling, "Natalie outsmarted you, and that's it?"
"I made a deal with Keith and Aidan. I get a share of the Barns family's assets, and I'll help them hold off the Stanley family from getting involved." The man replied, realizing that without the Barns family, Natalie wouldn't have it easy either.
"Just like that?" Evelyn raised an eyebrow.
