Chapter 539 She Wouldn't Dare Strike at Me
Evelyn's concerns were not lost on Dermot, but he remained composed. "Don't worry, I can handle it."
"All right, call me if anything happens. For now, she won’t dare touch me openly." As long as Blake was on her side, Lucia couldn't make a move against her, at least not in the light of day.
Dermot felt a warmth blossom in his heart from Evelyn's concern. "Okay," he assured her.
Afterward, Dermot walked Evelyn down to the lobby and watched her get into her car and drive away. He waited until the car was out of sight before turning back inside.
Following that day, the encounters between Dermot and Evelyn became rare.
They were both incredibly busy. Evelyn arranged for her company's headquarters relocation, and Dermot spent his time moving the Doyle Group and dealing with the Roberts family's mounting hostility.
They didn't come after Dermot with a hitman like Evelyn had feared. Instead, they choked off his business opportunities, scheming to bankrupt him and leave him with nothing.
But Dermot wasn't an easy man to bring down. Bankrupting him wouldn't be a walk in the park.
He found it tough to stay afloat, dedicating every ounce of his energy to the company. Because of this, he couldn’t afford to spare a moment to reconnect with Evelyn.
After Evelyn and Sarah had secured the location for their headquarters, they began building their team. Since then, the Morris City branch become a subsidiary of Evelyna Fashion Group.
With all that in hand, Evelyn could finally loosen up a little. With Sarah and Luke watching over things, she could afford to take a breather.
It had to be said that Luke was incredibly capable. Evelyn felt that without him, many challenges wouldn't have been as easily overcome.
Stepping out of the corporate headquarters, Evelyn was about to hail a cab to head over to the Kyte Group. With things wrapped up here, she planned to get back to Morris City, partly to settle things with the branch office and partly to rescue Ruby from Craig's clutches.
Before that, she needed to check in with Blake regarding his availability since they'd agreed to go to Morris City together.
However, before she could hail a cab, her ringtone sounded. She glanced at the caller ID with some surprise. "Kevin?"
"Evelyn, are you busy right now?" The comforting and gentle voice of Kevin came through the phone.
"Just wrapped up here. Kevin, is there something you need?" Evelyn asked, her voice tinged with a hint of concern.
Kevin hesitated for a moment before offering, "No pressing matter. I was thinking, if you have some time, maybe you'd like to join me for dinner?"
Evelyn paused, taking a moment to process the invitation. Although she and Kevin had always been close, they hadn't met often. Now that she was in Columbia, their paths might cross more frequently.
"Sure, but I should be the one to treat you," Evelyn replied, recalling her intention to invite Kevin out to eat amidst her busy schedule.
It was serendipity that Kevin had called, and Evelyn was happy to take the opportunity. As for visiting the Kyte Group, she figured it could wait until after dinner.
Kevin was pleased with the prospect of a private dinner with Evelyn. To him, it didn’t matter who was treating whom.
After choosing a spot, Kevin offered to pick her up, but Evelyn declined.
She had already hailed a taxi. "Let's just meet at the restaurant, Kevin."
"All right." Knowing she was already in a cab, Kevin didn't insist. He would have plenty of other opportunities in the future.
Evelyn ended the call and casually browsed the news. Then, she caught up with the latest on the Roberts family.
