Chapter 1249: I Won't Scold You

Dermot passed on Evelyn's exact words to Craig. "So, what's the plan? You gonna hold Ruby accountable or what?"

Craig, always the self-aware one, shot back, "If I do, you think Evelyn's gonna flip for me?"

Dermot mulled it over. As a buddy, he had to think about Craig's feelings too. Plus, suing Ruby was never really on the table for him.

"Being even is good; now I can ditch this guilt trip." Ever since Ruby bailed, guilt had been gnawing at him. But now that the score was settled, he should feel some relief.

Dermot looked a bit worried. "What about Ruby though..."

"She said we're square, so why would I keep bugging her? Tell Evelyn I’m done bothering Ruby." Craig finally seemed to make up his mind.

After this whole mess, Craig got it—he and Ruby were done. Any move he made now would just be a waste and probably make her hate him more.

He thought, 'Screw it, let it go.'

Losing Ruby for good wasn’t that hard to swallow. Craig felt a sting in his eyes, wiped them with his hand, and then laughed.

He could still cry! Was he really tearing up?

It was kinda funny.

Dermot saw the tears but kept quiet, feeling a lump in his throat too. "Craig, let it go, man. You need a fresh start. The Bush family’s out of the top ten families. If nothing crazy happens, the Irvine family’s gonna take that spot. You’ve got a lot to do and you’ll meet better people."

He paused and added, "Remember Lydia? She was into you big time. She’s pretty cool. If she’s still into you, maybe give it a shot. Who knows, you might end up liking her too."

It could happen. Evelyn got Ruby to give Alex a chance, and Ruby ended up liking him.

He hoped Craig would find his happy ending too.

Craig nodded with a grin, then joked, "You make it sound so easy. Remember when I told you to give up on Evelyn? How’d that go?"

Dermot went silent.

This was something Craig had to figure out on his own; no amount of advice would help.

Downstairs in the operating room, the surgery wrapped up, and Alex was wheeled into the ward.

He had a bunch of injuries, but none bad enough for the ICU, so they took him to a regular room for observation.

Evelyn walked Ruby into the ward and saw Alex lying there.

"You chat with him for a bit; I’m gonna go find Dermot upstairs." Evelyn left the room to Alex and Ruby, making her exit.

Ruby didn’t say anything, just smiled at her, then walked over to the bed.

The anesthesia hadn’t worn off yet, so Alex was still out cold. Ruby wasn’t in a rush; she just sat by his bed, watching him sleep. All her worries melted away.

As long as Alex was okay.

"Alex, don’t stress; I’m not gonna scold you. I get your dreams, I know you’ve got a sense of justice, and I understand." Ruby said, smiling.

Alex was a cop, with a strong sense of justice. He’d even risk his life to catch a criminal.

Ruby used to feel insecure about this, but after everything they’d been through, she realized that if Alex couldn’t make her feel safe, then who could?
