Chapter 888 There Had to Be a Process

Evelyn couldn't convince Amelia to continue her treatment and wait for surgery. She couldn't couldn't solve the practical problems Amelia was facing, and even though she was confident about the surgery, she couldn't promise a 100% success rate.

Evelyn was ready to pay for Amelia's surgery herself, but that wouldn't solve everything. There were many patients like Amelia, and there would be more in the future. How could she save everyone?

Moreover, when she suggested this idea, Amelia refused without hesitation, leaving Evelyn at a loss for what to do.

Frustrated, Evelyn knocked on Virgil's office door and walked in.

"Evelyn," Virgil greeted warmly. He respected her skills and her status.

Evelyn smiled, sat down across from him, and said, "Dr. Newman, the patient in bed 23 wants to leave."

Virgil was momentarily confused but quickly remembered Amelia, the woman with a child.

"Why does she want to leave? Her surgery is in two weeks," Virgil said, surprised. He knew Amelia's condition could be fixed with surgery.

Evelyn sighed, feeling helpless. "She wants to save money for her daughter."

Virgil was at a loss for words. He'd seen this before and understood why Evelyn was upset. "Do you feel it's a shame she could survive but is giving up because of money?"

Evelyn didn't respond, but she did feel that way.

"Evelyn, you don't lack money, so you can't understand how important money is to ordinary people."

"You might think life is worth spending everything on, but for regular folks, they have to consider the risk. Losing both life and money is a real tragedy."

Evelyn looked down, feeling uneasy.

Virgil smiled gently. "As a doctor, you have to get used to this. People say doctors are cold, but it's because we've seen too much of this. Sometimes, we feel sad or regretful because we can't help. Once you understand this, you can be a good doctor. If you can't..."

Virgil trailed off, but Evelyn got the message. If she couldn't accept this, she wasn't suited to be a doctor.

Feeling a pang in her heart, Evelyn asked, "Can I pay for her surgery myself?"

Amelia had a child, and Evelyn, who grew up without a mother, couldn't stand the thought of the child losing hers.

Virgil said, "Rationally, I don't recommend it. If you pay for one patient, word will get out that there's a soft-hearted doctor at Golombia Hospital who pays for treatments. What will you do when everyone comes to you?"

Evelyn wanted to argue but stayed silent, knowing how impractical it sounded.
