Chapter 858 I Can't Give You What You Want
It was Saturday the next day.
The phone rang, and Evelyn reached out from under the covers and answered, "Hello? Who is this?"
"Joshua? Where are you?" Evelyn sat up abruptly. If she hadn't misheard, Joshua seemed to say he was right outside Kyte Manor's door.
After a moment, she collected herself. "Alright, I'll have the butler come out to get you."
Evelyn rubbed her forehead after hanging up. Although she had fallen asleep quickly after talking to Ruby last night, she hadn't slept well.
It was mainly because she had a rather inappropriate dream, and the subject was Dermot, which left her quite frustrated.
No time to think too much, she climbed out of bed and freshened up. As soon as she walked out of her bedroom, she found Joshua sitting in the downstairs living room.
"Joshua, why are you here so early?" Evelyn asked, quickly walking downstairs.
She hadn't seen Joshua for a few days and wanted to make it clear to him today that she had no feelings for him, hoping he would give up.
However, seeing Joshua appearing here again, Evelyn felt her idea might have been too naive.
Upon seeing her, Joshua immediately noticed the dark circles under Evelyn's eyes and asked worriedly, "What's wrong? Didn't sleep well?"
"Yeah." Evelyn nodded, not wanting to discuss the topic. "Have you had breakfast? I'll have the kitchen prepare something."
"Not yet. I came over specifically for breakfast," Joshua said with a smile.
He didn't know what Evelyn had talked about with Otis yesterday, nor did he know if she had any contact with Dermot after he left. Worried about these things, he came over early in the morning, afraid of losing his presence in Evelyn's life.
Evelyn had no idea he was thinking so much. After giving the butler a few instructions, she sat down across from Joshua.
"How's work going?" Evelyn asked.
Joshua nodded. "It's alright, but there's still a lot to learn. I need to keep working hard."
"Joshua, don't be so modest. Although I don't manage the company much, they say you're excellent. I know it well." She didn't go to the company, but she still needed to know about the Kyte Group's affairs. Therefore, those managers would report to her weekly.
Several times in the reports, she saw praise for Joshua, so she knew his capabilities.
Joshua felt a bit embarrassed with her words. "They're just exaggerating. I'm not that great."
With that, Evelyn didn't continue the topic. "What are your plans for the future?"
"Evelyn, what are you trying to say?" Joshua wasn't stupid. Evelyn asking so many questions definitely meant she had something else to say.
More accurately, he could almost guess what Evelyn wanted to say—it was the same old topic.
Upon hearing this, Evelyn felt a bit helpless. "Forget it. I won't say it. You wouldn't listen anyway."
"If you really don't want me working at the Kyte Group, then I won't," Joshua said.
Evelyn waved her hand quickly, saying she didn't mean that. "It's the Kyte Group's fortune to have you working there. I'm just afraid it might delay your life plans."
"So, you're really not going to give me a chance, aren't you?" Joshua smiled bitterly, clearly understanding the meaning behind Evelyn's words.
Since the conversation had reached this point, Evelyn had no choice but to say directly, "Joshua, I really only consider you as my family, just like Aidan and Niall."
She pressed on, "So, don't change your life plans because of me. I can't give you what you want."
