Chapter 560 Yeah, I'm Selfish

Blake lapsed into silence, his mind churning over her words. After a drawn-out pause, he released a deep sigh. "Evelyn," he began, his voice heavy with uncertainty, "do you believe I was wrong to marry Dora?"

She offered no immediate response, but within the depths of her heart, she held fast to that belief. To Evelyn, even if Blake had been unable to be with her mother in the past, he should not have chosen Dora. Shouldn't he have waited, grown stronger, and then sought to reunite with his one true love?

Evelyn was convinced that Blake's heart had shifted, leading him to marry Dora and even father a child with her. If his heart had remained steadfast, she believed such an event would never have occurred.

Blake began to explain, "When your mother was taken from us, I ensured your safety before returning to the Kyte family. I was determined to grow stronger. It was during this time that the elders began pressuring me to marry. Dora, a daughter of the Roberts family, offered herself as my wife. No one objected to the match."

"My intentions were purely strategic. I believed I could use her Roberts identity to solidify my position within the Kyte family and gradually ascend the ranks. I never intended to have children with her."

He sighed, the bitter taste of the past evident in his voice, "But I underestimated Dora. She seized an opportunity one night when I was intoxicated, climbed into my bed, and became pregnant. She believed this would force me to yield."

"But I can assure you, my heart has always belonged to your mother. To me, Dora and Lucia could never compare to you and your mother."

His thoughts turned dark. 'I will not allow Lucia to take control of the Kyte family. If she were to seize power, there's no telling how she might treat Evelyn. I cannot allow that to happen.'

After Blake finished speaking, Evelyn felt far from satisfied. "Even though you portray yourself as innocent, in the end, you're still selfish."

She couldn't accept Blake's decision to marry Dora for the sake of power. If she were in his shoes, she would have chosen to climb the ranks gradually rather than resort to such a tactic.

"You're right, I am selfish," Blake conceded without argument.

"My only desire is to ensure your safety and your mother's. As for everyone else, their fate is of no concern to me." His words revealed not only his selfishness but also his ruthlessness.

Even towards Lucia, his own flesh and blood, he felt a sense of responsibility but lacked any genuine paternal affection.

A heavy silence fell between them, with Evelyn reluctant to continue the conversation. "Let's discuss this another time. I'm not ready to delve into it just yet."

She yearned to continue her work as a doctor. 'As for the future of the Kyte family... only time will tell.'

Blake didn't press the issue, understanding that some matters couldn't be rushed. He was still young, and giving Evelyn more time was not a problem.

He had his own issues to deal with. Now that Evelyn was back in the Kyte family, his next task was to uncover clues about her mother's whereabouts.

Their conversation was interrupted by a knock at Evelyn's door. As she moved to answer it, she realized she had yet to inform Dermot of Blake's presence.

Considering Blake's attitude towards him, Evelyn felt a wave of unease. "Have you finished your work?" she asked.

"Mm, I've decided to cook at home," Dermot replied, hoisting the grocery bag he had picked up on his way over.

Before Evelyn could utter a word, Blake had already approached. Upon seeing Dermot at the door, his expression darkened. "I thought I made myself clear."

He remembered his stern warning to Dermot to stay away from his daughter. To his dismay, Dermot had not only ignored his warning but had the audacity to show up uninvited, pushing the boundaries even further.
