Chapter 1237: Give it up, You Don't Stand a Chance
The Doyle and Kyte families wasted no time ganging up on the Bush family, but it wasn't just them. The Allen and Martin families jumped on the bandwagon too, making it a four-on-one beatdown.
Pretty soon, anyone doing business with the Bush family started bailing. No one wanted to tick off four powerhouse families at once. To them, the Bush family was toast. Sticking with them was like signing your own death warrant.
Leonard probably never thought Dermot would actually pull this off. Heck, he probably didn't even think Dermot would survive. He wasn't exactly shaking in his boots from Evelyn's threats. He figured if he took out Dermot, who'd be left to challenge him?
Back when Dermot and Evelyn were in the same car, Leonard thought if they both kicked the bucket, Golombia would be his playground. But now, both of them were alive and kicking, and they knew Leonard was behind it. Leonard's stomach dropped.
He tried hitting up other families for backup, but they weren't dumb. No way were they gonna stick their necks out for the Bush family now.
The Bush family was circling the drain. Members started dumping their shares, trying to get some cash before everything went belly up.
When Cassie showed up at the Bush Group Building, it was pure chaos. No one was working, and the whole place was buzzing with rumors about the company's imminent collapse.
She took a deep breath and barged into Leonard's office. "Leonard, what the hell is going on? Why are Dermot and Evelyn gunning for us?"
Leonard was still handling business like nothing was wrong. When he saw her, his eyes lit up, and he pulled her to sit next to him. "Cassie, the Bush family is in deep trouble. You gotta help me out."
"Leonard, didn't you say you wouldn't go after Dermot? Why'd you break your promise?" Cassie wasn't dumb. If Leonard hadn't made a move, Dermot and Evelyn wouldn't be coming after them.
Leonard didn't bother hiding anything. "Dermot? He's just lucky. If he were dead, everything would be fine."
What really bugged Leonard was that his guys hadn't managed to take Dermot out.
"Leonard, you promised..."
"Cassie, don't be so naive. Do you really think you'd have a shot with Dermot if I hadn't stepped in? He's already with Evelyn." Leonard cut her off, trying to make her see the truth.
Cassie's face went stiff, and she fell silent.
Leonard went on, "After all this, I get it now. Guys like Dermot—they come from good families, they've got skills, and they've got something extra that others just don't have."
"What?" Cassie was confused.
"Luck!" Leonard said.
"If he didn't have such good luck, he'd be dead a hundred times over by now. I can't compete with that." Leonard had only realized this in the past few days, so he thought of asking Cassie for help.
