Chapter 617 Playing the Part

"Ms. Kyte, the wind is growing stronger. Perhaps we should head back? There are others already in pursuit of him," Todd suggested, his voice laden with concern. He understood the depth of Evelyn's attachment to Dermot, and the thought of her coming to harm in his absence was unbearable. The potential fallout, should Dermot return to find Evelyn injured, was a scenario Todd didn't dare contemplate.Evelyn, however, disregarded his counsel, her resolve unwavering. "Mr. Angelo, would you kindly procure a diving suit for me?" she requested.Taken aback, Todd stuttered, "Ms. Kyte, do you intend to...?""I must see for myself," she declared, her voice resolute. Despite the number of individuals already engaged in the search, Evelyn felt an overwhelming need to participate. She couldn't shake the nagging doubts. What if they were merely going through the motions? What if they overlooked a vital clue left by Dermot? As Todd prepared to voice his objections, Craig materialized. "Ready the suit. If Ms. Kyte is willing to risk herself for Dermot, we have no right to hinder her.""But Mr. Irvine...""Regrettably, she didn't value him while he was alive, and now this performance... I fail to see the point," he scoffed, his disdain for Evelyn palpable. The feeling was mutual; Evelyn harbored no affection for Craig.Evelyn bit her lip, offering no rebuttal. Craig's words were a bitter pill to swallow; she had, after all, hesitated to commit to Dermot prior to his disappearance. Now, regret was her constant companion.Without further delay, Todd presented the diving suit. Evelyn donned it without hesitation, and slowly descended into the murky depths using the pre-arranged ropes. As her silhouette disappeared, Craig chuckled, "Playing the part."Todd sighed, but felt compelled to caution him, "Mr. Irvine, remember that Mr. Doyle is deeply concerned about Ms. Kyte's welfare. Should anything befall her...""If she's so easily defeated, she was never suitable for Dermot," Craig retorted dismissively before donning his own suit and vanishing from Todd's sight.Watching them depart one after the other, Todd wished he could join the search. However, his inability to swim and pressing company matters held him back. He instructed his team to maintain a vigilant watch over Evelyn and Craig. Neither could afford an accident.Submerged in the water, Evelyn quickly located the site where Dermot's car had plunged. Amid the wreckage and silent depths, there was no trace of him. She swam closer, inspecting meticulously, hoping to uncover a shred of evidence.

But her search yielded only disappointment. Whether it was the manner in which the car had sunk, or the urgency of the situation, Dermot had not left any clues behind.Evelyn swam to the shore, her gaze fixed on the spot where the car had disappeared beneath the water. She wondered what Dermot would have done had he still been alive at that moment. He would have surely battled desperately to reach the shore.

With that thought, Evelyn began to meticulously scan the ground, convinced that if Dermot had passed this way, he would have left some sign. When Craig emerged from the water, he found Evelyn squatting on the ground, engrossed in her search. He approached her, his voice laced with scorn, "You don't actually believe Dermot left clues here, do you?" Evelyn ignored him, unwilling to engage in a petty squabble with someone like Craig."He would have either been swept downstream or captured by them. Attempting to reach the shore would have been a death wish," Craig stated coldly. Despite his contempt for Evelyn, he felt compelled to share his analysis. After all, Dermot's enemies wanted him dead. They wouldn't have allowed him the chance to escape to the shore.
